    Life on Earth is intimately connected to the natural cycles of light and dark that make up a 24-hour day. For plants, animals, and even bacteria, these circadian rhythms control many biological functions. Humans can overrule their body clocks, but at a price: People whose circadian rhythms are regularly disrupted-by frequent jet lag or shift work, for example-are more vulnerable to diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. There are various theories to explain these associations, and researchers now have a new player to consider: the bacteria that live in the digestive tract. According to a study in mice and a small group of human volunteers, the internal clocks of these gut microbes sync up with the clocks of their hosts. When our circadian rhythms get out of whack, so do those of our bacteria.

    When it comes to charting the tree of life, the most important difference between humans and sharks isn't limbs versus fins or even lungs versus gills. It all comes down to our skeletons. Sharks' skeletons are made of cartilage, placing them along with rays and skates in a group of jawed vertebrates called cartilaginous fish. Humans-along with most other living vertebrates-belong to the same group as bony fish, whose skeletons are made of bone. Scientists knew that these groups diverged more than 420 million years ago, but what the last common ancestor looked like remained a mystery. Now, new discoveries inside the head of a small fossil fish from Siberia may provide some clues.

    "This modular case study tells the story of Dan and Annie, a married couple of Acadian ancestry who have a genetic form of deafblindness called Usher syndrome. They live in Southwest Louisiana, home of the largest population of DeafBlind citizens in the United States. Acadian Usher syndrome is caused by an allele of the USH1C gene that came to Louisiana with the first Acadian settlers from Canada who founded today's Cajun population. This allele's single nucleotide substitution creates an erroneous splice site that produces a defective cytoskeletal protein (harmonin) of the cochlear and vestibular hair cells and retinal photoreceptors. This splice site is the target of a promising gene therapy. The case study applies and connects Mendelian inheritance, chromosomes, cell division, vision and hearing, DNA sequences, gene expression, gene therapy and population genetics to a specific gene and its movement through generations of Dan and Annie's families.  After the introduction, each of the remaining sections can be used independently either for in-class team activities or out-of-class extensions or assignments over an entire year of introductory undergraduate biology. "

    This case study centers on symbiotic relationships between insects and bacteria using Drosophila melanogaster, the common fruit fly, and the recently discovered bacterial species Sodalis praecaptivus. Until recently, the only known Sodalis species of bacteria were symbiotically associated with several different species of insects. However, free-living non-symbiont Sodalis species are being tested in several different insect species to determine if they can transition into symbiotic relationships. A pre-class assignment (see Supplemental Materials) directs students to read an open access research journal article providing a comprehensive review of S. praecaptivus and describing an experimental weevil model that parallels that of the fruit fly. A PowerPoint presentation shown in class (see Supplemental Materials) provides further background before students work in small groups to complete the case study focusing on results from D. melanogaster and S. praecaptivus model experiments.  Although developed for a genetics course, this interrupted case is appropriate for an upper-level biology course. It can be completed within a 75-minute class meeting, or adapted for shorter time periods.

    Symbiotic relationships are interactions between species that live closely with each other and are commonly separated into three types: parasitism, mutualism, and commensalism. Students are often under the impression that these types are distinct and mutually exclusive, but on closer examination some interactions appear to be at times mutualistic, at other times parasitic. Is it perhaps better to think of mutualism and parasitism as two ends of a sliding scale, with commensalism in the middle? In this case study, students consider this question by examining what is often considered to be a classic example of mutualism existing between oxpecker birds and African savanna large mammals. After students examine data from a research study on oxpecker behavior, they then apply a more nuanced understanding of species interactions to a set of additional scenarios. The learning objectives for the case align with the Four-Dimensional Ecology Education Framework. The case was written for an upper-level undergraduate ecology course, but could easily be adapted for an introductory biology course.

    In 1977, a University of Oxford statistician named Richard Peto pointed out a simple yet puzzling biological fact: We humans should have a lot more cancer than mice, but we don't. Dr. Peto's argument was beguilingly simple. Every time a cell divides, there's a small chance it will gain a mutation that speeds its growth. Cells that accumulate several of these mutations may become cancerous. The bigger an animal is, the more cells it has, and the longer an animal lives, the more times its cells divide. We humans undergo about 10,000 times as many cell divisions as mice - and thus should be far more likely to get cancer.

    This case study describes the daily osmotic struggle for survival faced by hummingbirds. The narrative is written from the viewpoint of a human observer who sees an Anna's hummingbird feeding on flowers outside of her window.  She notices that the birds mostly feed early in the morning and again in the evening at dusk; midday encounters are rare.  The case raises questions about floral nectar production, how this correlates to feeding bouts, and how this in turn correlates to the daily osmotic challenges faced by these nectarivorous birds and their allies (sunbirds). Students will learn about renal adaptations for survival and how they operate. Finally, since hummingbirds have a high metabolic rate and cannot feed overnight they undergo torpor during this time, an energy saving physiologic state.  Students read journal articles to answer case questions, which should lead them to a better understanding of the related physiological processes of osmoregulation, metabolic rate and torpor.

    This directed case study was developed in order to present genomic data to students, allow them to interpret the impact of genetic variations on phenotype, and to explore precision medicine. Students are introduced to "Josie," a college sophomore who decides to have her genome sequenced after learning about genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in class. As students work  through the case, they learn about the different technologies that can be used in GWAS studies and interpret Josie's results for a subset of genetic markers that affect a range of traits from pharmacogenetics to disease risk alleles and non-pathogenic traits. Students are confronted with ethical issues such as duty to inform, actionable results, and variants of unknown significance (VUS). Students are also asked to reflect on their feelings about getting genomic testing for themselves. An optional activity for advanced students (included in the teaching notes) involves using the Gene database at NCBI to explore variants of the CYP2C9 gene. The case study is appropriate for use in undergraduate genetics or molecular biology classrooms.

The study in Nature journal shines a torchlight over some 40,000 years of prehistory, showing that ancient patterns of migration were just as complex as those in more recent times.
