The Atlantic Online | January/February 2010 | What Makes a Great Teacher? | Amanda Ripley - 0 views

"What Makes a Great Teacher? Image credit: Veronika Lukasova Also in our Special Report: National: "How America Can Rise Again" Is the nation in terminal decline? Not necessarily. But securing the future will require fixing a system that has become a joke. Video: "One Nation, On Edge" James Fallows talks to Atlantic editor James Bennet about a uniquely American tradition-cycles of despair followed by triumphant rebirths. Interactive Graphic: "The State of the Union Is ..." ... thrifty, overextended, admired, twitchy, filthy, and clean: the nation in numbers. By Rachael Brown Chart: "The Happiness Index" Times were tough in 2009. But according to a cool Facebook app, people were happier. By Justin Miller On August 25, 2008, two little boys walked into public elementary schools in Southeast Washington, D.C. Both boys were African American fifth-graders. The previous spring, both had tested below grade level in math. One walked into Kimball Elementary School and climbed the stairs to Mr. William Taylor's math classroom, a tidy, powder-blue space in which neither the clocks nor most of the electrical outlets worked. The other walked into a very similar classroom a mile away at Plummer Elementary School. In both schools, more than 80 percent of the children received free or reduced-price lunches. At night, all the children went home to the same urban ecosystem, a zip code in which almost a quarter of the families lived below the poverty line and a police district in which somebody was murdered every week or so. Video: Four teachers in Four different classrooms demonstrate methods that work (Courtesy of Teach for America's video archive, available in February at teachingasleadership.org) At the end of the school year, both little boys took the same standardized test given at all D.C. public schools-not a perfect test of their learning, to be sure, but a relatively objective one (and, it's worth noting, not a very hard one). After a year in Mr. Taylo

Prompts main image The best prompts are the ones that spark a personal connection between the writer and their ideas. Provided here are some generic writing prompts to get you started, but you will also find some tips on how to write your own prompts. These self-written prompts will offer better starting blocks for your students than the generic prompts because they spring from the immediacy of their lives. Another source for writing prompts is Blowing Away the State Writing Assessment by Jane Bell Keister. Narrative 1. It is 20 years from now. Your name has just been called and you are about to receive an award. Tell the story of how you came to be so successful and win this award. (Gr. 6-12) 2. Rewrite a fairy tale from a different point of view. For instance, * The Three Pigs as the wolf would tell it * Hansel & Gretel as the witch would tell it OR, use any example you like. (Gr. 5-8) 3. Write a story based on one of the following: * Where is it? * Breaking loose * If I had my way ... * Suddenly, in the headlights ... * That noise! * Don't even remind me * The biggest nuisance * Annoying! * At last! (Gr. 5-12) 4. Think of your best or worst day in school. Tell the story of what happened. (Gr. 4 & up) 5. What is data science? - O'Reilly Radar - 1 views

  • how to use data effectively -- not just their own data, but all the data that's available and relevant
  • Increased storage capacity demands increased sophistication in the analysis and use of that data
  • Once you've parsed the data, you can start thinking about the quality of your data
  • ...20 more annotations...
  • It's usually impossible to get "better" data, and you have no alternative but to work with the data at hand
  • The most meaningful definition I've heard: "big data" is when the size of the data itself becomes part of the problem
  • Precision has an allure, but in most data-driven applications outside of finance, that allure is deceptive. Most data analysis is comparative:
  • Storing data is only part of building a data platform, though. Data is only useful if you can do something with it, and enormous datasets present computational problems
  • Hadoop has been instrumental in enabling "agile" data analysis. In software development, "agile practices" are associated with faster product cycles, closer interaction between developers and consumers, and testing
  • Faster computations make it easier to test different assumptions, different datasets, and different algorithms
  • It's easer to consult with clients to figure out whether you're asking the right questions, and it's possible to pursue intriguing possibilities that you'd otherwise have to drop for lack of time.
  • Machine learning is another essential tool for the data scientist.
  • According to Mike Driscoll (@dataspora), statistics is the "grammar of data science." It is crucial to "making data speak coherently."
  • Data science isn't just about the existence of data, or making guesses about what that data might mean; it's about testing hypotheses and making sure that the conclusions you're drawing from the data are valid.
  • The problem with most data analysis algorithms is that they generate a set of numbers. To understand what the numbers mean, the stories they are really telling, you need to generate a graph
  • Visualization is crucial to each stage of the data scientist
  • Visualization is also frequently the first step in analysis
  • Casey Reas' and Ben Fry's Processing is the state of the art, particularly if you need to create animations that show how things change over time
  • Making data tell its story isn't just a matter of presenting results; it involves making connections, then going back to other data sources to verify them.
  • Physicists have a strong mathematical background, computing skills, and come from a discipline in which survival depends on getting the most from the data. They have to think about the big picture, the big problem. When you've just spent a lot of grant money generating data, you can't just throw the data out if it isn't as clean as you'd like. You have to make it tell its story. You need some creativity for when the story the data is telling isn't what you think it's telling.
  • It was an agile, flexible process that built toward its goal incrementally, rather than tackling a huge mountain of data all at once.
  • we're entering the era of products that are built on data.
  • We don't yet know what those products are, but we do know that the winners will be the people, and the companies, that find those products.
  • They can think outside the box to come up with new ways to view the problem, or to work with very broadly defined problems: "here's a lot of data, what can you make from it?"

Designing the Classroom of the Future | always learning - 3 views

  •
Considering that education may look very different in a reasonably short amount of time, that we're going 1:1 in the next year, continuing to expand our online course offerings, and that the school is not too afraid of taking risks, I want to make sure we don't just design a great classroom for today. I'm just not quite sure how to bring our classroom design into the present, while still being forward-thinking enough to take us into the future at the same time.

Historical Tweets - 0 views

  •
A quirky fun site that could just as easily be used by history teachers everywhere. Most people think Twitter was "created" in 2006. These are same people who think Richard Gere created Buddhism in the 1990's. Just before Madonna created yoga. Folks, like the sun, moon, and stars, Twitter has always been. This site proves it beyond a shadow of a doubt. Books have been ruining history. So many unnecessary words. Now, with Historical Tweets, history's most amazing men and women can be fully understood, a mere 140 characters at a time.

Promises | Horizontal Change Management - 0 views

"Integrity1 My daughters class flip chart list to describe Integrity. Can you name a few people around you, or in the public spotlight, that seemed to have missed that day in first grade? Promises Mrs. Dillon's first graders are well aware of the power of keeping promises. They know that promises are a contract between two people. One person expects things when that promise is made. Multiple kept promises, those smart kids know, helps build trust. They feel comfortable making friends with those they trust. In class they know it is much easier to finish things together if the other kids keep their promises. The really bright ones know that promises and promises kept are the deposits and withdrawals into and out of the account of collaboration, effort and success. Things get better when you manage that account- you know, positive change. Truthtelling Those little ones know early on what it means to not lie, to lie and to be dishonest. What Giordan's class has figured out is that being aware of the truth and revealing it, even if you know the result might be hard to deal with, is a good thing. The one who added this to the list might have done something wrong, separate from a lie, felt bad and fessed up. Smart he/she was to know that those consequences were much less severe than the ones that follow silence. Mistakes These kids are 7. I will let you figure out who, in the public limelight in those years, might have made mistakes and never admitted them- despite resounding evidence to the contrary. They have some negative role models. On their own level they know there is lots to be learned from having to explain a mistake, from gathering the courage to do so and from the connection that gives you to better future decision making. altruism First grader, kids in general, have a knack for the real kind of black and white. The kind where you know if someone might get hurt, you know if you might get hurt and you just feel what is right or wrong. They al

Vertical garden with the most popular form recently. Not just may be the house that utilizes a vertical garden, but additionally an all natural concept boutique with trying to utilize a vertical garden within the space. Choice of a vertical garden for that boutique is really a part of the best, for any vertical garden can be put inside a room that's much less large. Although just like indoor garden, the plants are mostly from tropical to complete well within the indoor climate.

QR Code Quest: a Library Scavenger Hunt | The Daring Librarian - 0 views

  •
"I remixed this awesome scavenger hunt originally created by Joyce Valenza and added a QR Code Twist! I re-worked some of the questions for a lesson with my adorable ESOL kids (we have 35 right now in our ESOL program & one cute be-freckled girl just came yesterday & speaks no English at all but she LOVED scanning the codes when I handed her my Droid Fascinate!) The rest of the kids have varying degrees of English proficiency but still will benefit from a few visual clues. So the scavenger hunt questions are intentionally simply & clearly worded combined with pics I created as QR Code Hints. You can also use this lesson for special needs classes, Library Media orientation, or even re-mix the questions, QR Codes, & hints for just about ANY subject area! To create the hints I used a combination of Photoshop, Flickr, bit.ly and my favourite QR Code generator, Kaywa."

It is an American clothing brand and retailer. Aside from clothing for men and women, it also markets other fashion accessories such as jewelry, perfumes, fashion accessories, and shoes. One of their initial designs was a stonewashed, slim-fitting jean, the 3-zip Marilyn. The first Department Store that welcomes the brand by ordering a dozen pairs of jeans was Bloomingdale. The jeans were all bought in just hours. It was the start of their success.
