The November/December issue of Oracle Magazine included an article about how organizations use Oracle Exadata Database Machine for increased efficiency, private cloud solutions, consolidation, and database as a service (DBaaS). The article highlights the University of Minnesota's DBaaS implementation to create its database hotel, which it developed to provide faster, more flexible, and more efficient service to all university departments. The university has two Oracle Exadata Database Machines and Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) for high availability. It also uses the Data Guard feature for disaster recovery capabilities. The university can now return registration results within seconds, even during peak registration periods, and through centralized IT, it enables departments to manage their own databases.

The November 14 edition of IT Wire includes the following release highlighting the University of Melbourne implementing Oracle Platform for its student portal. The article includes comment from Niranjan Prabu, Director, University of Melbourne who notes it was straightforward to add the new portal functionality and the dream of service-oriented architecture (SOA). The new platform reduced the cost of redeveloping the portal by 40 percent.

The November 4 edition of Campus Technology included an article covering the University of Texas-Pan American's (UTPA) new financial and human resource payroll software. The university implemented the software in an effort to accommodate expected growth in enrollment and new academic programs. UTPA deployed Oracle E-Business Suite 12.1 to manage accounts receivable, cash management, and time entry for faculty and staff operations.

The November edition of TechTarget included an article discussing Oracle Fusion Middleware (OFM). The article notes that OFM spans multiple services such as integration services, business intelligence, collaboration, content management, and Java EE and developer tools. Of note, the article highlights Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's (ERAU) OFM implementation. The article includes comment from Cindy Bixler, CIO, ERAU, who notes that OFM integrated applications across the university's three campuses for single sign-on - something that would have been almost impossible to achieve without Oracle.

The December 10 edition of eCampus News includes the following article exploring the definition of big data analytics from some of the industry's most prominent voices. Of note, the article states that Oracle's definition of big data is, "the derivation of value from traditional relational database-driven business decision making, augmented with new sources of unstructured data."

Consumers are asking for a shopping experience that allows them to purchase where and when they want, using a mix of devices, web sites and stores. Retailers are responding by erasing lines between channels, targeting offers and making inventory readily available at the right time and place.
