The December issue of University Business includes an article highlighting the myths and realities of open source and its use on campus. The article includes comment from Cole Clark, global vice president of education and research, Oracle, who debunks multiple myths. Cole notes that often higher education institutions turn to open source when there are already mature commercial applications with robust systems to meet their needs. Cole explains that an open source application that's newer and relies on the power of community might not have had the time to catch up with commercial software's level of development. The article also notes that Oracle has utilized open source for the types of benefits that wider collaboration can bring. Cole notes that using open source makes Oracle's products better, and development has taken significant leaps forward because of it. Cole concludes the article with feedback on how institutions should move forward when considering open source solutions.

The article notes that the study, conducted in collaboration with the Economist Intelligence Unit, found that utilities must drive a step change in the way the world perceives and uses water if they are to tackle a probable shortfall in demand by 2030. The article notes that consumers needed to become more aware of the impacts of wasting water and new metering systems and technologies that can tap into previously inaccessible sources, such as underground aquifers, were identified as the most promising ways of meeting rising demand.

"More and more people are demanding that prices online and in the store be similar," says David Dorf, senior director of technology strategy for Oracle Retail. "The fact that consumers expect more price parity means that there needs to be more collaboration from those silos of business... Gartner research vice president Kevin Sterneckert believes consistent pricing is imperative; he notes that 67 percent of consumers want the same price across channels. Still, he insists there remains a need to understand when and where conditions are right for channel-independent pricing.
