Joining an increasing trend towards in-store mobile POS services that can help retailers improve customer service and increase efficiency, Oracle say they have introduced Oracle Retail Mobile Point-of-Service (POS), a mobile extension to their Oracle Retail Point-of-Service that enables store associates to assist customers and securely complete transactions from anywhere in the store using mobile devices.

Lids Sports Group is upgrading to a new Oracle Retail POS solution that will simplify administration and the user experience for the more than 50 different POS screen and receipt configurations for the retailer's partner brands.

In an earnings call this week, Urban Outfitters CEO Glen Senk talks about the retailer's vision for mobile commerce and in store tests with mobile POS. The Urban Outfitters solution is developed by Starmount and built on the open Oracle Retail POS.

Disney Stores' Ron Johnson, speaking at the Oracle Retail Cross-Talk user conference last week in Chicago, said the new POS has created stronger in-store links to Disney's e-commerce offerings, reduced losses due to mispricing and lowered IT costs with a more centralized operational structure. Mobile POS is becoming increasingly more popular among both consumers and retailers as it speeds and simplifies checkout, eliminates lines, reduces costs and helps keep personnel out in the store, talking with customers

The new mobile POS tool from Oracle can also use other applications in the suite to check in-store inventory, look up information on products, activate gift cards and print or email receipts. It also scales to work with fixed and other mobile checkout points

Oracle (www.oracle.com) introduced the MICROS Workstation 6, using Microsoft Windows Embedded 8.1 and the latest Intel Atom processor. It works in concert with mobile, cloud and social media to deliver consistent, integrated content across multiple sources, and can offer guest recommendations, special promotion rollouts and more. The Workstation 6 incorporates the design elements of a mobile POS in an ergonomic, all-in-one design with a 15.6-inch-wide HD touchscreen, and a spill and impact resistant enclose. Additionally, it can be mounted on a stand that allows staff to adjust the screen angle or swivel it for guest to view. The integrated, three-track magnetic card reader allows for 3DES or AES encryption upon swiping, and includes six USB ports for attaching printers, scanners, cash drawers and more.

Merron's experience is not unusual, says Dr. Peter Agel, Global Segment Leader -Hotels for Oracle Hospitality. But Agel believes that the future is brighter. One of Oracle's main goals, he says is "to reduce complexity and cost by providing cloud based services."
