ollie1: Iowa Online Course Standards - 0 views

  • The course goals and objectives are measurable and clearly state what the participants will know or be able to do at the end of the course
    • Tami Plein

This aligns with Margaret Heritage's ideas of clearly stated learning goals and success criteria
  • instructor-student and student-student interaction to foster mastery and application of the material

I love that on-line learning allows for multiple interactions between student-student and student-instructor that might not take place as readily and as easily in a typical classroom setting.

Online Learning: The Pros And Cons Of K-12 Computer Courses - 0 views

  • The analysis did find that students in online conditions performed modestly better, on average, than those learning the same material through traditional face-to-face instruction.

It seems like there are so many variables for this to be a sound statement.
  • In Florida, thousands of students now rely solely on computers instead of teachers for their daily virtual lessons. And lawmakers are planning to expand online instruction to even more students.

What about classes that need hands on work? Industrial technology, certain types of art, science labs

"Proponents of online classes say they are a cost-effective alternative to traditional instruction that provide students more flexibility in their learning, as well as access to a greater variety of options. They allow schools to offer makeup courses, additional electives and Advanced Placement classes which they wouldn't be able to otherwise. However, there isn't much research on the effectiveness of these virtual courses. Critics argue online learning will be used as a way for school districts to cut corners on spending -- to the detriment of their students' educations."

In Florida, Virtual Classrooms With No Teachers - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • “There is no doubt that blended learning can be as effective and often more effective than a classroom,” said Mr. Moore, who is also editor of The American Journal of Distance Education. He said, however, that research and his experiences had shown that proper design and teacher instruction within the classroom were necessary. A facilitator who only monitors student progress and technical issues within virtual labs would not be categorized as part of a blended-learning model, he said. Other variables include “the maturity and sophistication of the student,” he said.

If done well, the blended program seems like the best way to go, but unfortunately, money again seems to make the decisions, not what is best for students. Does it say how many teachers per student for the online version?

As a very new newbie to social bookmarking, the table referred to in this sentence really helps me understand the similarities and differences between Diigo and Delicious. This is a good reference to help me choose which tool to use.

I did not know that Diigo also allowed a collection of web pictures. I was using Delicious, but I really like the sticky not feature of Diigo

Why We Like Diigo - School Computing - 0 views

  • While an overall annotation can be helpful when sharing resources, thoughtful comments tied to specific portions of the text are more illuminating. These localized comments also lead to fruitful conversations more often than do summary comments.

This is a powerful use of Diigo that we would like to harness in our moodle class; supports higher level thinking, active engagement, and builds the community of learners.

I like this as an alternative to Powerpoint. The students can collaborate on slides, and they can work on them from home. This has made a big difference in the quality of the presentations. They also enjoy not being restricted to the limited class time to work.

Reading/Writing with Technology in the Primary grades - 0 views

Dawn shared this article with me (Thanks Dawn) and I wanted to pass it along. Very interesting research about the increased/decreased achievement for digital natives in young children. The main point was that testing and writing when it matches student expertise with technology results in greater achievement scores.
  •
I was interested in the technology article focusing on students with special needs and assistive technology. It was interesting all of the different possibilities that I have never heard mentioned. Usually, the students we may suggest ATT (assistive technology) for have more significant disabilities. These strategies could be used in many of our classrooms.
