UDL-Implementation and Research Network - 0 views

  •
"The Universal Design for Learning Implementation and Research Network (UDL-IRN) is a grassroots organization started by a collaborative group of practitioners, researchers, and developers in 2010. The mission of the UDL-IRN is to support educators in the effective implementation of UDL. As a mission driven organization we are focused on the following activities: Identification and dissemination of models of best practice. Identification and dissemination of effective implementation tools. Supporting and expanding the UDL implementation research base. Identification and dissemination of progress mentoring practices. Fostering high-quality UDL personnel preparation & professional development. Promoting increased collaboration across education."

Free Technology for Teachers: Organizing Research with Diigo Outliner - 0 views

"the newest feature from Diigo - Outliners! Consider this challenge. Students begin researching a particular project. They gather a number of online resources, but then become quickly overwhelmed when they see the magnitude of the information absent of context. With Diigo Outliners, students can digitally organize all of their resources into an outline to later guide the creation of their final research paper or project."

"Michael Rosen meets parents, researchers and carers to explore the ways we communicate with people with autism or profound learning disabilities. Phoebe Caldwell talks about the principles of "intensive interaction", and why listening and non verbal communication are central to her work. Researchers at the Norah Fry Research Centre in Bristol explain why changing the way we communicate with people with disabilities can challenge preconceptions, and make relationships.."

Assistive Technology Data Collection - 0 views

  •
InfoUse, in collaboration with the Research Triangle Institute (RTI), is conducting an Assistive Technology Act Data Collection Project for the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR). Our 4-year project designed and implemented a Web-based performance reporting system for the Assistive Technology Act state grants program. This system was designed to meet the information needs of the Assistive Technology Act grantees, NIDRR, and Congress, and to fulfill the requirements of the Government Performance and Results Act of 1993 (GPRA). The project is also conducting evaluation studies, described in more detail under Activities & Resources. We are creating a Chartbook on Assistive Technology that presents national estimates on the need for and use of assistive technology. The project is producing statistical estimates, by state, on the need for and use of assistive technology. The project is studying "model approaches" to capacity building systems that provide assistive technology training to professionals and individuals with disabilities. Research on employment-related assistive technology is also underway.

Interacting with Autism - 1 views

  •
"JASPER (Joint Attention Symbolic Play Engagement Regulation) is a treatment approach based on a combination of developmental and behavioral principles developed by Dr. Connie Kasari at the Center for Autism Research and Treatment, at University of California, Los Angeles. This intervention model targets the foundations of social-communication (joint attention, imitation, play), uses naturalistic strategies to increase the rate and complexity of social-communication, and includes parents and teachers as implementers of the intervention to promote generalization across settings and activities and to ensure maintenance over time. Dr. Kasari and her colleagues have tested this approach in a series of target and modularized research studies. In the first randomized controlled trial, 58 preschool children with autism were recruited from an early intervention program based on applied behavior analysis, and were taught joint attention and play skills. This study showed promising evidence that a child-centered treatment focused on early social-communication deficits of joint attention and play could lead to improvements in these core deficits while also increasing the child's use of language (Kasari et al, 2006, 2008, 2012) over a 5 year span. Researchers are continuing to test the use of JASPER with children of various ages (infants to school-aged) and across various settings (clinic, home and schools)."

Research Webinar - Designing Effective AAC Technologies for Beginning Communicators - A... - 2 views

  •
"To date, there are few guidelines to support clinicians and manufacturers in the design of effective AAC systems for beginning communicators. When AAC systems are well designed, they may enhance communication and language outcomes for beginning communicators with complex communication needs. However, poorly-designed AAC systems may potentially interfere with language learning and communication effectiveness. In this session, we will discuss guidelines for the design of effective AAC technologies for beginning communicators with complex communication needs, including infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with developmental disabilities (e.g., autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome) as well as older individuals with significant cognitive impairments. The session will present research results from recent studies and will suggest clinical guidelines to improve the design of AAC systems based on these research results. "

"The use of Participatory Action Research (PAR) during the project ensures that TATE SIP is informed by stakeholder input throughout the development and evaluation phases. Outcome measures will include evaluation of device use (device skill acquisition), device usability (skills used in targeted environments), functional performance (activities of daily living affected by device use), quality of life (subjective well-being) and social participation (community integration). To ensure the TATE SIP reaches its intended audiences-survivors of TBI and the individuals who will train them to use ATC-we are working with a national group of researchers, practitioners, consumers, and advocacy organizations to support recruitment and dissemination activities. "By using mixed media-based digital learning portfolios, a teacher can demonstrate learning in an unprecedented way. Using digital photos, video, text, and the versatile Microsoft PowerPoint, the individualized education plan comes alive to truly show learning taking place. This presentation will feature a free downloadable portfolio system in the PowerPoint format. The portfolio system is based on research conducted as part of Dr. Mary Ann Lowe's dissertation in the Doctoral Studies Program in Speech Language Pathology at Nova Southeastern University, and includes additional research-based content and technical work by both Dr. Lowe and Samuel Charles Sennott."

"This Issue Brief harnesses the thinking of NCTI stakeholders and the literature in the educational and AT field to provide insight for current and future investment, development, and research. The Issue Brief discusses five themes that define state-of-the-art assistive technology: 1. Convergence 2. Customizability and universal design for learning (UDL) 3. Research or evidence-based 4. Portability to promote independence 5. Interoperability Underlying these themes is a design imperative: devices should be simple - simple to learn, to use, to integrate, and to support."

"Macomb County's E3T Universal Design for Learning professional development team is dedicated to providing teachers with the tools and strategies they need to remove curriculum barriers and increase learning opportunities for EVERY learner.  E3T teams learn to create flexible curriculum that meets the needs of a wide range of students including gifted students, struggling students, students for whom English is a second language, disadvantaged students, disengaged students, in short, all of the students who comprise today's classrooms. E3T is based upon an instructional framework called Universal Design for Learning or UDL. UDL is a research-based approach to teaching, learning and assessment that draws on brain research and new media technologies to respond to individual learner differences and interests.   E3T teams efficiently and "

Three lessons from the science of how to teach writing | Education By The Numbers - 0 views

  • In nine separate experiments with students, 15 additional minutes of writing time a day in grades two through eight produced better writing.
  • Not only did writing quality improve, so did reading comprehension.
  • Another cluster of studies proved that writing improves a students’ mastery of the subject; the act of writing helps you learn

  • In 83 percent of 30 studies on the use of word processing software, students’ writing quality improved when they wrote their papers on a computer instead of writing by hand.

"Graham's review of the research doesn't resolve the age-old debate of whether students learn writing best naturally -  just by doing it - or through explicit writing instruction. But there are effective practices where the research is unequivocal. Distressingly, many teachers aren't using them. "We have confirmation of things we know that work, but are not applied in the classroom," said Graham."
