The Fiscal Year 2015 (FY15) Joint Program Committee 8/Clinical and Rehabilitative Medicine Research Program (JPC-8/CRMRP) Extremity Regeneration Technology/Therapeutic Development Award (ERTTDA) is intended to support the translation of promising preclinical findings into products focused on extremity regeneration. The focus is on bone and soft tissue reconstruction, limb and tissue salvage technologies, and regenerative medicine technologies for the treatment of trauma-induced damage.

Supported by the NIH Common Fund (Common Fund) Science of Behavior Change (SOBC) Program, this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits exploratory and developmental research project applications (R21) that will further the goal of the SOBC Program to advance a mechanisms-focused, experimental medicine approach to behavior change research. Funded projects in the SOBC Research Network have developed experimental manipulations, assays, and/or measures (hereafter referred to as assays for brevity) to support an experimental medicine approach to behavior change research. The goal of this announcement is to leverage SOBC Measures Repository assays of putative targets in self-regulation, stress reactivity and stress resilience, and interpersonal and social processes domains to (1) engage a selected putative target(s)/mechanism(s) of action or verify target engagement of the selected target(s)/mechanism(s) of action, and (2) test the degree to which engaging the putative target(s)/mechanism(s) of action produces a short-term desired change in a health behavior. The goal of this FOA is to accelerate the adaptation, validation, and translation of SOBC Research Network assays for use in ongoing clinical trials. This FOA calls for the integration of SOBC Research Network assays into active NIH-supported clinical trials of drugs, devices, procedures, or behavior modifications. As such, the active NIH-supported clinical trial used to respond to this FOA does not have to be a behavior change trial or identify behavior change as a primary outcome. The integration of SOBC Research Network assays into ongoing clinical trials will accelerate the development of interventions and experimental manipulations that have been shown to engage specific mechanisms of behavior change and the development of assays that verify engagement of those behavior change targets.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) is accepting applications for the fiscal year (FY) 2018 Minority Fellowship Program (Short Title: MFP). The purpose of this program is to reduce behavioral health disparities and improve healthcare outcomes for racial and ethnic minority populations by: (1) increasing the knowledge of behavioral health professionals on issues related to treatment and recovery support for individuals who are from racial and ethnic minority populations and have a substance use disorder (SUD); (2) improving the quality of SUD treatment services delivered to racial and ethnic minority populations; and (3) increasing the number of culturally competent professionals in psychology focusing on services appropriate for those with SUDs, addiction psychiatry, and addiction medicine who teach, administer services, conduct research, and provide direct SUD services to racial and ethnic minority populations. The SUD treatment and recovery needs of racial and ethnic minority communities in the United States have been historically unmet due to the scarcity of practitioners equipped to address this population's needs. The MFP increases the number of behavioral health professionals with knowledge of issues related to treatment and recovery support for SUD among racial and ethnic minority populations. This program aims to specifically expand the training of professionals with a focus in psychology, addiction psychiatry, and addiction medicine.

The Blueprint Neurotherapeutics Network (BPN) invites applications from neuroscience investigators seeking support to advance their small molecule drug discovery and development projects into the clinic. Participants in the BPN are responsible for conducting all studies that involve disease- or target-specific assays, models, and other research tools and receive funding for all activities to be conducted in their own laboratories. In addition, applicants will collaborate with NIH-funded consultants and can augment their project with NIH contract research organizations (CROs) that specialize in medicinal chemistry, pharmacokinetics, toxicology, formulations development, chemical synthesis including under Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and Phase I clinical testing. Projects can enter either at the Discovery stage, to optimize promising hit compounds through medicinal chemistry, or at the Development stage, to advance a development candidate through Investigational New Drug (IND)-enabling toxicology studies and phase I clinical testing. Projects that enter at the Discovery stage and meet their milestones may continue on through Development. BPN awardee Institutions retain their assignment of IP rights and gain assignment of IP rights from the BPN contractors (and thereby control the patent prosecution and licensing negotiations) for drug candidates developed in this program.

The Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health is presented annually by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat established the award in 1992 out of a commitment to improving the science base and delivery of mental health services. This international award recognizes individuals, groups, or organizations for outstanding achievement in improving mental health and is accompanied by a medal and $20,000. Each year, a selection committee appointed by the IOM reviews nominations based on selection criteria that reflect the ideals of Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat.

MOD invites all qualified scientists with faculty appointments or the equivalent, at universities, hospitals and research institutions (not for profit or profit), to submit applications for research grants relevant to our mission. The AAAS Early Career Award for Public Engagement with Science, established in 2010, recognizes early-career scientists and engineers who demonstrate excellence in their contribution to public engagement with science activities. A monetary prize of $5,000, a commemorative plaque, complimentary registration to the AAAS Annual Meeting, and reimbursement for reasonable hotel and travel expenses to attend the AAAS Annual Meeting to receive the prize are given to the recipient. Nominee must be an early-career scientist or engineer in academia, government or industry actively conducting research in any scientific discipline (including social sciences and medicine).  "Early career" is defined as an individual who has been in his/her current field for less than seven years and pre-tenure or job equivalent. Post-doctoral students are eligible for this award. Nominee will have demonstrated excellence in his/her contribution to public engagement with science activities, with a focus on interactive dialogue between the individual and a non-scientific, public audience(s). Types of public engagement activities might include: informal science education, public outreach, public policy, and/or science communication activities, such as mass media, public dialogue, radio, TV and film, science café, science exhibit, science fair, and social and online media.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement is to support a practice-based research network in the United States to transform the development, delivery, and sustainability of evidence-based mental health practices and services. Through a research consortium embedded within large and integrated healthcare delivery systems (public and/or commercial systems) that serve representative populations, this Network would result in a continuously learning healthcare system as defined by the Institute of Medicine, to create a continuous cycle or feedback loop in which scientific evidence informs clinical practice while data gathered from clinical practice and administrative sources inform scientific investigation.

Established in 2002, the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation has evolved into the largest private funder of spinal cord injury research, rehabilitation, and clinical training in the United States. The foundation funds scientific research (preclinical, translational, clinical, and psychosocial); opportunity and independence programs; scholarships for students with SCI; postdoctoral and SCI medicine fellowships; and other projects designed to support the SCI community in the United States and Canada. To advance this mission, the foundation has issued a Request for Proposals for its 2019 Psychosocial Research grants cycle. A goal of the funding is to identify and prioritize critical gaps in the psychosocial field and develop more effective interventions aimed at improving the health of individuals with SCI across the lifespan. Funding categories range from postdoctoral fellowships to pilot and demonstration project grants. Award amounts will range between $150,000 and $400,000. To be eligible, applicants must be a nonprofit organization that conducts research on the psychological and social factors that affect health, functioning, and quality of life for people living with spinal cord injuries.

One Mind is inviting applications for its Rising Star Research Awards program, which seeks to fund early-career investigators who have demonstrated productivity and innovation in a scientific field that can be applied to the study of neuropsychiatric disorders such as anxiety, addiction, bipolar disorder, depression, posttraumatic stress, schizophrenia, traumatic brain injury, suicidality, and other serious psychiatric illnesses. To that end, grants of $300,000 over three years will be awarded in support of research proposals on any of a wide range of neuropsychiatric conditions. Studies focusing on bipolar disorder are of special interest, including applications that would advance therapeutics ranging from biomarkers to promising therapeutic modalities (e.g., neurostimulation). Examples of relevant research include those with potential to identify new biological mechanisms and therapeutic targets; develop new or refine existing models and research tools; identify or validate biomarkers; evaluate the effectiveness of therapies, including pharmaceuticals, electroceuticals, digital therapies, or cognitive and behavioral health interventions to prevent the onset of or promote recovery from neuropsychiatric disorders; characterize similarities and differences between two or more neuropsychiatric or neurotraumatic disorders to advance personalized medicine; improve understanding of how comorbid conditions such as cancer and diabetes, as well as other neurological and non-neurological disorders, interact with neuropsychiatric disorders and impact diagnosis, prognosis, and treatments; promote or restore brain health by conducting bi-directional and/or iterative translational research using existing clinical data or new data from small pilot clinical studies in combination with relevant preclinical or computational models; or advance digital health, telehealth, or other innovative approaches to increasing access to mental health care.

The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) is seeking applications from qualified organizations for Injury Control Research Center (ICRC) grants. These centers will conduct high quality research and help translate scientific discoveries into practice for the prevention and control of fatal and nonfatal injuries and violence that support NCIPC’s priorities and mission. ICRCs are expected to blend Outreach, Training and Education, and Research activities into a program to reduce the number, risk, and public health impact of injury and violence in the U.S. The over-arching goals for the NCIPC ICRC program are to: Build the scientific base for the prevention and control of fatal and nonfatal injuries and violence. Integrate, in the context of a national program, professionals from a wide spectrum of disciplines of epidemiology, behavioral and social sciences, medicine, biostatistics, public health, health economics, law, criminal justice, and engineering to perform research and provided technical expertise in order to prevent and control injuries and/or violence more effectively. Encourage investigators to propose research that involves intervention development or translation of effective programs among individuals, organizations, or communities. Provide technical assistance to injury and/or violence prevention and control programs in their geographic region, including other researchers; universities; medical institutions; community groups; state and local government agencies, public health agencies; and policy makers. Act as sources of injury and/or violence prevention and control information for their constituents and stakeholders at the local, state, tribal, national, and global levels.

Substantial progress has been made in the development and testing of efficacious theory-based developmentally focused prevention interventions designed to address modifiable proximal risk and protective factors with the goal of having an impact on distal mental health outcomes, including suicide behaviors and the occurrence of serious mental illness. Pediatric-serving primary care (including obstetrics/gynecological for pregnancy and post-partum, pediatric care, family practice, adolescent medicine) is a health care setting that holds potential for the implementation of mental health prevention interventions because it offers broad access and is non-stigmatizing. In addition, there is the potential for prevention interventions found to be efficacious in the primary care setting to be endorsed by the United States Prevention Services Task Force (USPSTF) and covered under insurance. Because pediatric primary care offers broad access and is non-stigmatizing, it may be an appropriate setting for reaching populations who experience mental health disparities, including racial/ethnic minority groups, sexual and gender minorities, individuals living in rural areas, socioeconomically disadvantaged persons, or any other subgroup with documented disparities in prevalence of mental illnesses, mental illness trajectories, access to prevention services, and quality and outcomes of mental health care. Accordingly, this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages studies that involve diverse populations, including groups that might experience health disparities, and as appropriate, it encourages examination of whether prevention services in primary care can potentially reduce or eliminate disparities.
