Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act (LEMHWA) funds are used to improve the delivery of and access to mental health and wellness services for law enforcement through training and technical assistance, demonstration projects, and implementation of promising practices related to peer mentoring mental health and wellness programs. The 2020 LEMHWA program will fund projects that develop knowledge, increase awareness of effective mental health and wellness strategies, increase the skills and abilities of law enforcement, and increase the number of law enforcement agencies and relevant stakeholders using peer mentoring programs. The COPS Office, a federal provider of innovative, customer-focused resources that address the continuing and emerging needs of those engaged in enhancing public safety through community policing, has designed the LEMHWA solicitation to address law enforcement mental health and wellness. The 2020 LEMHWA program has been established to fund specific projects related to the following topic areas: (1) Peer Support Implementation Projects; (2) National Peer Support Program for Small and Rural Agencies; (3) LEMHWA Coordinator Assistance Provider, and (4) Invitational Applications. Policies for Action: Policy and Law Research to Build a Culture of Health (P4A) was created to help build the evidence base for policies that can help build a Culture of Health. P4A seeks to engage long-standing health care, mental and behavioral health, and public health researchers, as well as experts in areas that we recognize have strong influence on health, well-being and equity-such as labor, criminal justice, education, transportation, housing, and the built environment.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2018 Mental Health Awareness Training grants (Short Title: MHAT). The purpose of this program is to: (1) train individuals (e.g., school personnel, emergency first responders, law enforcement, veterans, armed services members and their families) to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental disorders, particularly serious mental illness (SMI) and/or serious emotional disturbance (SED); (2) establish linkages with school- and/or community-based mental health agencies to refer individuals with the signs or symptoms of mental illness to appropriate services; (3) train emergency services personnel, veterans, law enforcement, fire department personnel, and others to identify persons with a mental disorder and employ crisis de-escalation techniques; and (4) educate individuals about resources that are available in the community for individuals with a mental disorder. It is expected that this program will prepare and train others on how to appropriately and safely respond to individuals with mental disorders, particularly individuals with SMI and/or SED.

Applications are welcome from any field as long as the potential application of the research to animal law and policy reform is clear. We have a particular interest in fields such as psychology, including moral psychology, sociology, philosophy, economics, and other social sciences. In addition, this year we are especially interested in empirical research applicable to legal reform focused on animals used in experimentation, animals harmed through pest control or "nuisance wildlife management" activities, and dogs at risk of being classified as "dangerous."

Through this solicitation, BJA seeks a provider to operate a National Training and Technical Assistance Center (National TTA Center) that will assist and guide states, tribes and local governments to grow and enhance cross system responses between local law enforcement and their mental health and IDD service delivery partners; and to address local response, needs and outcomes for people with mental illness and intellectual and developmental disabilities. This National TTA Center is critical to assisting jurisdictions by organizing the structure of the National TTA Center and responding to the focus of policy and practice as outlined in this solicitation.

The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) is seeking applications from qualified organizations for Injury Control Research Center (ICRC) grants. These centers will conduct high quality research and help translate scientific discoveries into practice for the prevention and control of fatal and nonfatal injuries and violence that support NCIPC’s priorities and mission. ICRCs are expected to blend Outreach, Training and Education, and Research activities into a program to reduce the number, risk, and public health impact of injury and violence in the U.S. The over-arching goals for the NCIPC ICRC program are to: Build the scientific base for the prevention and control of fatal and nonfatal injuries and violence. Integrate, in the context of a national program, professionals from a wide spectrum of disciplines of epidemiology, behavioral and social sciences, medicine, biostatistics, public health, health economics, law, criminal justice, and engineering to perform research and provided technical expertise in order to prevent and control injuries and/or violence more effectively. Encourage investigators to propose research that involves intervention development or translation of effective programs among individuals, organizations, or communities. Provide technical assistance to injury and/or violence prevention and control programs in their geographic region, including other researchers; universities; medical institutions; community groups; state and local government agencies, public health agencies; and policy makers. Act as sources of injury and/or violence prevention and control information for their constituents and stakeholders at the local, state, tribal, national, and global levels.

The Administration for Children and Families' (ACF), Administration on Children, Youth and Families' (ACYF), Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB) will award funding for the Basic Center Program(BCP). The purpose of the BCP is to provide an alternative for runaway and homeless youth who might otherwise end up with law enforcement or in the child welfare, mental health, or juvenile justice systems. The BCP works to establish or strengthen community-based programs that meet the immediate needs of runaway and homeless youth and their families. The programs provide youth up to age 18 with emergency shelter, food, clothing, counseling and referrals for health care. Most basic centers can provide 21 days of shelter for up to 20 youth at a time. There are exceptions for jurisdictions that have different standards for licensing. Basic centers seek to reunite young people with their families, whenever possible, or to locate appropriate alternative placements.

One cooperative agreement of $1,250,000 will be awarded to support the examination, assessment, identification, and pilot testing of evidence-based policies, practices, procedures, and protocols designed to facilitate an understanding of and comprehensive approach to addressing vicarious (or secondary) traumatic stress in victim assistance professionals, law enforcement personnel, and other first responders who are subject to the impact of traumatic stress due to large-scale incidents of criminal mass violence or a series of exposures to an accumulation of traumatizing incidents.

The purpose of this solicitation is to promote multidisciplinary research in the area of safety, health, and wellness for the criminal justice community in support of the NIJ Safety, Health, and Wellness Strategic Research Plan 2016-2021.2 Categories: 1) Causes and effects of stress and trauma on: (a) law enforcement and corrections officers or (b) individuals in violent communities; 2) Impact of parental jail incarceration on children; and 3) The efficacy of services, strategies, policies, and processes within the criminal or juvenile justice system that serve as responses to children exposed to violence

The FY 2016 CVE Grant Program supports programs, projects and activities that prevent recruitment or radicalization to violence by interrupting those efforts, building community-level resilience to them, and identifying the early signs of radicalization to violence and providing appropriate interventions through civic organizations, law enforcement or other entities. Community resilience in the CVE context means those communities where violent extremists routinely meet disinterest and opposition, recruitment attempts routinely fail, and communities know what tools and support are available to assist individuals that may be on a path towards violence.

The Comprehensive School Safety Initiative (CSSI) funds rigorous research to produce practical knowledge that can improve the safety of schools and students. The initiative is carried out through partnerships between researchers, educators and other stakeholders, including law enforcement and mental health professionals. Projects funded under the CSSI are designed to produce knowledge that can be applied to schools and school districts across the nation for years to come. This solicitation includes multiple funding categories with different expectations and requirements to accomplish the purposes of the CSSI.

The Second Chance Act Programs are designed to help communities develop and implement comprehensive and collaborative strategies that address the challenges posed by reentry and recidivism reduction. "Reentry" is not a specific program, but rather a process that starts when an individual is initially incarcerated and ends when he or she has been successfully reintegrated in the community as a law-abiding citizen. The reentry process includes screening and assessment in a pre-release setting, the delivery of evidence-based programming in a pre-release setting, and the delivery of a variety of evidence-based programming for every program participant in a post-release setting designed to ensure that the transition from prison or jail to the community is safe and successful. The Reentry Program for Adult Offenders with Co-Occurring Substance Abuse and Mental Health Disorders is designed to improve outcomes for adults with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders through the screening and assessment of incarcerated individuals, availability of some pre-release programming, leading to the provision of appropriate evidence-based services and treatment after incarceration.

University College Cork invites applications for scholarships in the four-year structured PhD programme in Digital Arts and Humanities (DAH). Successful candidates will be registered with the full-time inter-disciplinary structured PhD programme co-ordinated with an all-Irish university consortium. This Dear Colleague Letter is to alert all basic science and engineering communities, including education researchers, to the Foundation's interest in receiving proposals that, while investigating fundamental questions, seek to pose and test hypotheses that could inform research in forensic sciences. The interest spans both disciplinary and interdisciplinary research. Additionally, the wide public interest in forensics can provide an effective vehicle for basic research in science education. International partnerships, where appropriate, are encouraged, as are synergistic interactions with forensics and/or law enforcement agencies and organizations. Proposals for workshops to explore fundamental science drivers and their relevance to forensics are also welcome. 

This initiative encourages research on the impact of changing marijuana policies and laws on public health outcomes, including marijuana exposure among children, adolescents, and adults; other licit and illicit drug use; education and professional achievement; social development; risky behaviors (e.g., drugged driving); mental health; HIV, etc.

The nuclear theory program encompasses the structure and reactions of nuclei, and of hadrons in few-nucleon and nuclear environments, and the quark/gluon substructure expressed by QCD.  Supported research includes contributions to broad theoretical advances as well as model building and applications to experimental programs at facilities such as NSCL, RHIC and Jefferson Laboratory, and to astrophysical phenomena. This includes formulating new approaches for theoretical, computational, and experimental research that explore the fundamental laws of physics and the behavior of physical systems; formulating quantitative hypotheses; exploring and analyzing the implications of such hypotheses analytically and computationally; and, in some cases, interpreting the results of experiments. Some awards are co-funded with other programs in the Physics Division and in other divisions.

The Second Chance Act of 2007 (Pub. L. 110-199) provides a comprehensive response to the increasing number of incarcerated adults and juveniles who are released from prison, jail, and juvenile residential facilities and returning to communities. There are currently over 2.2 million individuals serving time in our federal and state prisons, and millions of people cycling through tribal and local jails every year. Ninety-five percent of all people incarcerated today will eventually be released and will return to communities. The coordination of reentry of members of Native American tribes is even more complex given that they can return from federal, Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), state, local, and tribal facilities. NIJ's New Investigator/Early Career Program provides support for non-tenured assistant professors to conduct applied research on topics relevant to NIJ's Office of Research and Evaluation (ORE) including justice systems, violence and victimization, and/or crime control and prevention. Applications must propose research led by a Principal Investigator (PI) who: was awarded a terminal degree within the four (4) years prior to September 30, 2016; holds a non- tenured assistant professor position at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States; and has not previously served as PI on an NIJ research grant or fellowship. Please note that those who have held Graduate Research Fellowships with NIJ are not deemed PIs under that award and are eligible under this solicitation. NIJ encourages applications from diverse social and behavior sciences including but not limited to criminal justice, criminology, economics, law, psychology, public health, and sociology.

BJA is seeking applications for funding under the Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) Program. This program provides cross-system technical assistance to Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program (JMHCP) grantees. It furthers the Departments mission by increasing criminal justice capacity to reduce violence and increase support of law enforcement to address challenges when encountering people with Mental Illnesses or co-occurring mental illnesses and substance abuse during calls for service, within the courts, and correctional/detention settings. Through the TTA program, JMHCP grantees will receive the necessary support to reduce and assist the number of people with mental illnesses who enter and move through the criminal justice system.

The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) within the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) announces the availability of funds for the fiscal year 2018 Direct Services for Survivors of Torture (DS SOT) grant program. The purpose of the DS SOT program is to increase access to strengths-based, trauma-informed services that assist survivors of torture and their families in the healing and recovery process. Under this grant program, direct services are provided to persons who have been tortured on foreign soil under the color of law. The program offers holistic and integrated services including medical, psychological, legal, and social work. All of these services are provided either directly by the grantee or indirectly through partner organizations or affiliates.
