    he FETP graduates, staff and trainees are important assets and help build sustainable public health capacity in their countries. Through public health conferences they share field epidemiology experiences and present work investigations through oral and poster presentations. This collaboration reinforces best practices in applied epidemiology, training, surveillance, and response and introduces new tools, concepts, and training materials. However, the region’s FETPs can be more effective if their collaboration extends beyond scientific conferences. Network development can enhance surveillance, investigation and response capacity globally through regular communication and exchange of information and allow for more robust response to regional and national public health threats. In 2009, the FETPs in the East Mediterranean Region (EMRO) began to organize a network in the Middle East that partner with MOH FETP representatives, CDC and EMRO closely collaborate to strengthen existing national FETPs and regional disease surveillance. This close collaboration and networking among programs is critical as the globe faces new and re-emerging public health threats. The recent outbreaks of Ebola and Zika viruses clearly demonstrate the need for strong local and regional programs that can mobilize rapid response teams quickly and assist countries and global partners to control disease and strengthen public health infrastructure.

Advancing the Science of Geriatric Palliative Care (R21) - 0 views

    This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages research grant applications focused on palliative care in geriatric populations. This FOA emphasizes studies in a variety of settings including ambulatory care, hospitals (and specific sites within hospitals including specialty wards, intensive care units and emergency departments), assisted living facilities, and short- and long-term care facilities; however, hospice and end-of-life settings are not included within the scope of this FOA, as they are the subject of other NIH programs. Rather, this FOA highlights research on palliative care in settings and at time points earlier in geriatric patients' disease or disability trajectories. Types of studies may include observational, quasi-experimental, or interventional studies using primary data collection and/or secondary analyses. Leveraging on-going cohorts, intervention studies, networks, data and specimen repositories, and other existing resources and infrastructure are encouraged.

    The intent of the FY17 ERP IDA is to solicit research to understand the magnitude and underlying mechanisms of PTE. The FY17 ERP IDA offers two levels of funding. Funding Level I is intended to support high-risk or high-gain research from Principal Investigators (PIs) at or above the level of a postdoctoral fellow (or equivalent), but below the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent). Note that PIs submitting Funding Level I applications will be required to verify their eligibility for this award. Funding Level II is intended to support a more mature, hypothesis-driven research project. Combating Opioid Overdose through Community-Level Intervention - 0 views

    Undertake research activities that would entail implementing and evaluating community-based efforts to fight the opioid overdose epidemic; and Support and promote the partnership of law enforcement and public health agencies, whose collaboration is critical to reducing overdose and other harms of opioid (mis)use. This ongoing opioid overdose epidemic presents new challenges to public health and public safety officials, medical professionals, local communities, and other stakeholders invested in curbing rates of accidental death. Preparing regional and community leaders to respond effectively to the public health emergency that is today's opioid overdose crisis (and be prepared to take on that crisis as it evolves tomorrow) is essential for achieving the shared goal of preventing fatal overdose and saving lives. ONDCP expects to award one Federal grant under the Combating Opioid Overdose through Community-Level Intervention Initiative for a 1-year period, beginning approximately September 2017. The successful non-Federal entity (NFE) will conduct research activities that entail implementing and evaluating community-based efforts to fight the opioid overdose epidemic. These activities will be focused on the regions of the United States with some of the highest rates of fatal and non-fatal opioid-related overdoses and will work to coordinate the often decentralized state and local efforts to assess and respond to opioid-related overdoses.

BRAIN Initiative: Tools to Facilitate High-Throughput Microconnectivity Analysis (R01) - 0 views

    The purpose of this Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative is to encourage applications that will develop and validate tools and resources to facilitate the detailed analysis of brain microconnectivity. Novel and augmented techniques are sought that will ultimately be broadly accessible to the neuroscience community for the interrogation of microconnectivity in healthy and diseased brains of model organisms and humans. Development of technologies that will significantly drive down the cost of connectomics would enable routine mapping of the microconnectivity on the same individuals that have been analyzed physiologically, or to compare normal and pathological tissues in substantial numbers of multiple individuals to assess variability. Advancements in both electron microscopy (EM) and super resolution light microscopic approaches are sought. Applications that propose to develop approaches that break through existing technical barriers to substantially improve current capabilities are highly encouraged. Proof-of-principle demonstrations and/or reference datasets enabling future development are welcome, as are improved approaches for automated segmentation and analysis strategies of neuronal structures in EM images.

    This NOFO will support implementation and acceleration of comprehensive HIV prevention, care, and treatment programs for HIV/AIDS epidemic control in Fort Portal Region of Uganda. This will entail implementation of comprehensive HIV/AIDS services in line with the new WHO guidelines,including targeted HIV testing services (HTS) to find more people living with HIV (PLHIV), especially men and key and priority populations (KP/PP) through HIV care and treatment; TB/HIV prevention, diagnosis, and treatment;elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission (eMTCT); Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC); services for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC); and associated laboratory and strategic information (SI) services through a health systems strengthening approach. Additionally, the recipient will work closely with the Ministry of Health (MOH) to strengthen the technical capacity of regional structures and District Health Teams (DHTs) for an effective public health decentralized HIV/AIDS response. Expected outcomes include improved access,coverage, and quality of HIV services ensuring 90% of PLHIV know their status;90% of people diagnosed with HIV infection receive antiretroviral therapy (ART); and 90% of those on treatment are virally suppressed.

"New partners" are defined as organizations that have never received Bureau for Global Health funding as either a direct or sub-recipient. Under this definition, organizations that have been directly funded by a USAID Mission bilateral program or have received USAID Regional Bureau funding will be considered a new partner.
