This funding opportunity is to fund a demonstration project addressing rural medical communications. The 2014 National Emergency Communications Plan (NECP) recognizes this evolving landscape with the involvement of new stakeholders and changes in technologies and policies impacting emergency communications Response agencies are becoming more connected to each other, requiring that need to communicate and share information during emergencies, such as public health, medical, and transportation agencies, critical infrastructure sectors, and the public. Emergency responders are not always trained for the types of incidents they encounter but can share valuable information and provide situational awareness during response and recovery efforts. Specifically, medical providers require communications systems and procedures to transmit patient information and coordinate an influx of patients following large-scale disasters. As the whole community increases its engagement during emergencies and as technology advances, the need for medical communications and trained personnel increases to ensure coordinated and effective response. To implement the 2014 NECP, OEC needs to improve its understanding of communications among emergency responders and medical personnel, especially in rural communities. To examine rural emergency medical communications, OEC is reestablishing the Rural Emergency Medical Communications Demonstration Project (REMCDP). The intent of REMCDP is to work with a public health or medical facility to examine communications barriers and identify solutions that enhance existing emergency communications infrastructure.

The Helping Hands Grants Program provides grants of up to $5,000 to medical schools for mental health and substance use disorder projects, particularly in under-served minority communities. Funded projects are created and managed by medical students and can be conducted in partnership with community agencies, or in conjunction with ongoing medical school outreach activities. Since 2005, The Helping Hands Grants Program has helped psychiatry students meet these needs in their own communities. The program was established to encourage medical students to participate in community service activities, particularly those focused on under-served populations; raise awareness of mental illness and the importance of early recognition of illness; and build an interest among medical students in the psychiatric field and working in under-served communities.The Helping Hands Grants Program provides grants of up to $5,000. These projects can be conducted in partnership with community agencies or in conjunction with ongoing medical school outreach activities, and must be supervised by at least one psychiatrist.

The National Council on Disability (NCD) is seeking proposals for a report series on bioethics and disability. The report series will examine policies and practices related to the availability of medical interventions and life-saving medical care for people with disabilities. It will examine five specific areas where disability and bioethics intersect, with a focus on how a person's disability impacts medical decisions: organ transplants; medical futility; physician assisted suicide; genetic testing for fetal disability; and Quality Adjusted Life Years. Each report will make findings and recommendations aimed at improving access to life-saving medical care for people with disabilities, and improving the understanding of policy makers and the medical community on the value of the lives of people with disabilities.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's (AHRQ) mission is to produce evidence to make health care safer, higher quality, more accessible, equitable, and affordable, and to work within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and with other partners to make sure that the evidence is understood and used. AHRQ's Center for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (CQuIPS) is addressing patient safety and medication research by focusing on the safe usage of medications.  This perspective centers on how medications move through the health care system and how this systemic process can be improved so that patients are not harmed, while health care delivery is improved.  CQuIPS encourages the involvement of all members of the health care team, especially patients and families, nurses, pharmacists, technicians (pharmacy and medication administration technicians), health care administrators, risk managers, and physicians across all settings of care, including in the home. This FOA will fund investigative research demonstration projects that examine the effective implementation of processes, policies, and behaviors that support safe use of medication as well as its sustainment and dissemination.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement is to support the discovery and development of medications to prevent and treat opioid use disorders (OUD) and overdose. The UG3/UH3 Phase Innovation Awards Cooperative Agreement involves 2 phases. The UG3 is to support a project with specific milestones to be accomplished by the end of the 2-year period. The UH3 is to provide funding for 3 years to a project that successfully completed the milestones set in the UG3. UG3 projects that have met their milestones will be administratively considered by NIDA and prioritized for transition to the UH3 phase. Investigators responding to this FOA must address both UG3 and UH3 phases. Application may include preclinical or clinical research studies that will have high impact and quickly yield the necessary results to advance closer to FDA approval medications that are safe and effective to prevent and treat OUDs and overdose. The compounds to be evaluated can be small molecules or biologics. They can be tested in pre-clinical models and/or for the clinical manifestations of OUDs such as withdrawal, craving, relapse, or overdose. Applications may focus on the development of new chemical entities, new formulations of marketed medications available for other indications, or combinations of medications that hold promise for the treatment of OUDs and overdose. Through this FOA, NIDA seeks to fast-track the discovery and development of medications to prevent and treat OUDs or opioid overdose and to advance them in the FDA's drug development approval pipeline. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support research that advances compounds towards FDA approval by leveraging NIDA funds with the strengths and resources of outside organizations, such as for-profit and not-for-profit entities, including academic institutions, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, private and public foundations, and small businesses. Applications from single entities that possess considerable resources for medications development will also be considered, provided the entity demonstrates a significant resource commitment to the proposed project. A resource commitment from a single entity could, for example, consist of salary support for key personnel or production and formulation of clinical trial material. It is anticipated that in comparison with traditional grant-funded research, strategic alliances will increase the pace at which medications to treat Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) move through the drug development process. Both the project period and budget of the grant are consistent with the objective of accelerating the pace of medications development compared to traditional research project grant funding. Project aims can range from the development of a new molecular entity to the expansion of an existing medication's clinical indication(s). Each project should have a defined entry and exit point in the medications development pathway, with the objective of advancement in the FDA approval process. It is hoped that support for these collaborations will accelerate the rate of medications development for SUDs.

PART A -- Core Curricular Enhancements Strategic Direction A2 -- Promote educational enhancements that include transdisciplinary and interprofessional population health training Activity I: Medical Assistants Resources and Training on Immunization (MARTi) MARTi is a website http://www.marti-us.org/ hosted and updated by the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR). MARTi was developed to provide a collection of immunization training, education, and resource materials for medical assistants and those responsible for their training, such as office managers or supervisors. The website provides reviewed and credible training and education programs and resources specifically developed for the education and reading level of medical assistants. Activities will include the following: --Manage and update the website content and resources as new vaccine recommendations and best practices become available and redesign the navigation of the website to feature resources offering continuing education (CE) credits --Create newsletters and social media announcements --Develop responsive design website to provide access through mobile devices --Assemble a committee of experts to advance use of the website and recommend improvements. Committee will convene via conference call (3 or 4 times a year). The committee will consist of key groups including the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and the Professional Association of Healthcare Organization Management (PACHOM) as well as post-secondary institutions training future medical assistants. CDC will not direct or manage any aspects of the committee.

The National Council on Disability (NCD) will seek proposals for a report series on bioethics and disability. The findings in these reports primarily serve to assist policymakers, including the White House and Congress, with the insight needed to make policy decisions designed to improve medical decision-making regarding persons with disabilities. The reports will also provide state legislatures, medical associations and educators, and persons with disabilities and those who support them, with an understanding of policy, legislation, and initiatives that impact their lives. The report series will examine policies and practices related to the availability of medical interventions and life-saving medical care for persons with disabilities. It will examine five specific areas where disability and bioethics intersect, with a focus on how a person's disability impacts medical decisions, including decisions to provide life-saving care.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to (1) promote preclinical, translational, clinical and epidemiological research in pain medications use in children or in pregnant women to fill knowledge gaps in safe use of the pain medications in these special populations; and (2) develop effective instruments or approaches to assess and evaluate maternal and child outcomes of pain medication treatments. There is a need for data on pain medications used in children and pregnant women to be shared and made available to the scientific community for future studies and to encourage replication of findings and meeting the goal of further advancing research in this area. The purpose of this program is to provide funding to states to enhance/expand their treatment service systems to increase capacity and provide accessible, effective, comprehensive, coordinated care, and evidence-based medication assisted treatment (MAT) and recovery support services to individuals with opioid use disorders seeking or receiving MAT. As a result of this program, SAMHSA seeks to: 1) increase the number of individuals receiving MAT services with pharmacotherapies approved by the FDA for the treatment of opioid use disorders; 2) increase the number of individuals receiving integrated care; and 3) decrease illicit drug use at 6-months follow-up. For the purpose of this RFA, integrated care is defined as the organized delivery and/or coordination of medical, behavioral or social and recovery support services provided to individual patients in order to produce better overall health outcomes for people that may have multiple healthcare needs. MAT is defined as the use of FDA-approved opioid agonist medications (e.g., methadone, buprenorphine products including buprenorphine/naloxone combination formulations and buprenorphine mono-product formulations) for the maintenance treatment of opioid use disorder and opioid antagonist medication (e.g., naltrexone products including extended-release and oral formulations) to prevent relapse to opioid use. MAT includes screening, assessment (which includes determination of severity of opioid use disorder, including presence of physical dependence and appropriateness for MAT) and case management. MAT is to be provided in combination with comprehensive substance use disorder treatment, including but not limited to: counseling, behavioral therapies and when needed pharmacotherapy for co-occurring alcohol use disorder. MAT is to be provided in a clinically driven, person-centered and individualized setting. The Osler Library of the History of Medicine of McGill University sponsors a travel grant designed to assist scholars who need to travel and establish temporary residence in Montreal in order to use the resources of the Library. The Library has the largest collection of rare and secondary material in medical history in Canada, manuscripts and archives of such notables as Sir William Osler, Wilder Penfield, Norman Bethune and Maude Abbott, medical ephemera and 2,500 medical prints. Our monographic, serials and ephemera holdings are listed in the McGill Library Catalogue. The grant is available to historians, physicians, graduate students and others interested in medical history. It carries an award of $1,500 (Canadian), and must be held for 2-4 weeks during calendar year 2012. $2,000 will be made available to those requiring 4 weeks to complete their research.

Opioid analgesics are widely prescribed for the treatment of pain patients. The increase in prescription opioids abuse, misuse and diversion warrants the support of new approaches designed to reduce their non-medical use. Among potentially important steps towards the goal of safer opioid analgesics are the efforts to reformulate medication so that an individual would not be able (abuse resistance) or would not want (abuse deterrence) to divert the prescription drug, and to create innovative medication dispensing devices/gadgets. This FOA represents a focused effort of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) on preventing diversion and misuse at the patient level.

To analyze and communicate complex scientific topics is more than just a profession - it is an art.  Medical science journalism is no exception. Accordingly, launching a career as science journalist proves to be an arduous endeavor. To help recognize emerging medical science journalists, Germany's most read medical journal Deutsches Ärzteblatt, the European Union of Science Journalists' Associations (EUSJA), and the World Health Summit (WHS) will grant the "Next Generation of Science Journalists" Award for the second time. The top selected five young professionals will be invited to participate in the WHS 2013 and experience a unique international networking and learning opportunity. This provides a career head-start as the annual World Health Summit attracts some 1000 high-ranking participants from all health-related sectors - from Nobel Prize laureates to CEOs and future leaders. Additionally, each winner will receive 500 Euro to recompense travel expenses.

The American Society of Breast Surgeons Foundation awards grants related to patient breast care and medical education. The foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to improving the standard of care for breast disease patients by providing support for medical and patient education, advancing breast disease research and diagnosis and treatment technologies, and offering programs and services to medical professionals and their patients.

The Doctors Company Foundation was created in 2008 by the Doctors Company, the nation's largest insurer of medical professional liability for physicians, surgeons, and other health professionals. The purpose of the foundation is to support patient safety education for healthcare professionals in training and in practice, as well as patient safety research with clinically useful applications. To advance this mission, the foundation is accepting applications for research and education programs and projects designed to enhance patient safety. Grant amounts will be determined on an individual basis based on project budget and availability of funds. The foundation does not support clinical research projects primarily involving the provision of medical support services to patients. Construction projects and the purchase of equipment will not be funded. While general funding for medical meetings and conferences will not be considered, support for invited speakers when the principal focus of their presentation is on patient safety and support for the attendance of healthcare professionals in training at patient safety conferences will be considered.

The HRP contains six Elements: Space Radiation, Human Health and Countermeasures, Exploration Medical Capability, Behavioral Health and Performance, Space Human Factors and Habitability, and International Space Station Medical Project. Fourteen disciplines or areas support the Program: Behavioral Health and Performance, Bone, Cardiovascular, Extravehicular Activity, Immunology, Medical Capabilities, Muscle, Nutrition, Pharmacology, Radiation, Sensorimotor, Advanced Food Technology, Advanced Environmental Health, and Space Human Factors Engineering. Awards generally range from under $100K per year for focused, limited efforts (e.g., data analysis) to $1M per year for extensive activities (e.g., development of scientific hardware). The funds available for awards in each program element offered in this solicitation range from less than one to several million dollars, which allows NASA to select a few to numerous proposals depending on the program objectives and the submission of proposals of merit. This solicitation may result in grant, cooperative agreement, and contract awards. The period of performance for an award is one to five years. Any changes or modifications to any of these guidelines will be specified in the descriptions of the relevant program elements in the solicited research response area appendices of this solicitation.

The intended goal of this FOA is to facilitate the development, production, and distribution of pediatric medical devices. Although the FOA is issued by the FDA's Office of Orphan Products Development, the grant application is intended to encompass devices for all pediatric diseases and conditions, not just those that are rare. Applicants will request funding to serve as a nonprofit consortium to provide expert advising and support services to innovators of pediatric medical devices. The advising and services will focus on the total product life cycle for medical devices from concept, through pre-market development, to commercialization, and replacement by subsequent generation of devices.

The “Partner Actions to Improve Oral Health” program is a five-year competitive renewal to continue CDC investment in and support of oral health promotion and disease prevention programs. The purpose is to build the strength and effectiveness of state oral health programs recipients to prevent and control oral diseases and related conditions. Under component 1, recipient will work with all NOFO DP18-1810 funded programs to provide technical assistance, training, and capacity building resources for: 1) the Basic Screening Survey, 2) evidence-based oral health strategies (i.e., school sealant programs and community water fluoridation) and infection prevention and control practices, 3) oral health surveillance, 4) evaluation of oral health programs, and 5) reports on the oral health program capacity for all 50 states (CDC-funded and non-funded states). Under component 2, recipient will work with six programs selected NOFO DP18-1810 to integrate oral health with other chronic disease programs (i.e., medical/dental integration). Recipient will provide technical assistance for medical/dental integration programs, and compile examples of effective medical/dental integration programs and strategies. The proposed program will replace and build upon FOA 13-1313 [FY2013-FY2018]. Successful implementation and execution of the NOFO strategies will result in decreases in dental caries, oral health disparities, and co-morbid chronic diseases.
