CDC announces the availability of Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 funds to implement CDC-RFA-DP18-1809: High Obesity Program. The growing body of evidence suggests that obesity is one of the most significant challenges facing the public health system. If this continues, obesity and the many complications it causes will increase the disease burden in the United States. Poor nutrition and low levels of physical activity affect overall health and are significant risk factors for obesity and other chronic diseases. Obesity in the United States affects 78.6 million (35%) adults and 12.7 million (17%) children and accounts for approximately $147 billion in annual health care costs. The burden of obesity and other chronic diseases negatively affects our nation's businesses, economy, and military readiness and is higher among certain racial/ethnic populations and geographical locations. This five-year program provides resources for land grant universities to leverage community extension services to implement evidence-based strategies that increase access to places that provide healthier foods and safe and accessible places for physical activity in counties with an adult obesity rate of over 40%.

The PRMRP Technology/Therapeutic Development Award (TTDA) is a product-driven award mechanism intended to provide support for the translation of promising preclinical findings into products for clinical applications, including prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment, or quality of life, in at least one of the Congressionally directed FY18 PRMRP Topic Areas. Products in development should be responsive to the healthcare needs of military Service members, Veterans, and/or beneficiaries.

The FY18 LCRP Career Development Award supports early-career, independent investigators to conduct impactful research under the mentorship of an experienced lung cancer researcher as an opportunity to obtain the funding, mentoring, and experience necessary for productive, independent careers at the forefront of lung cancer research. This award is intended to support impactful research projects with an emphasis on discovery. Submissions from and partnerships with investigators at Department of Defense (DoD) military treatment facilities and laboratories, and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers and research laboratories are strongly encouraged.

The CRRP seeks to enhance medical capabilities at the point of greatest need in order to save the most lives in future combat scenarios, which may be complicated by limited resources, austere conditions, and/or mass casualty events. The intent of the FY19 CRRP RDTRA is to support research that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas into clinical applications, including healthcare products, technologies, and/or practice guidelines. Applicants may leverage existing resources in translational research to address high-impact research ideas or unmet needs in delivering lifesaving care to the Warfighter during prolonged and en route care in austere and combat environments. Research of interest may include knowledge products, "knowledge resulting from research with the potential to improve individual or public health,"2 and solutions that can accelerate the introduction of military-relevant health products or technologies into clinical and/or operational use. For this award mechanism, the definition of "leveraging" is as follows: An investigator basing a research project on existing resources in order to amplify potential gains in knowledge or accelerate technical maturity.

The Louisiana State University Special Collections department invites applications to our 2020-2021 research travel grant program. Grants of at least $1,000 are available to support travel, lodging, and additional expenses during a research visit to Baton Rouge, LA. Collection strengths include the Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections (LLMVC), comprised of over 10 million manuscript items, 50,000 published materials, and 250,000 photographs documenting the region's social, economic, political, cultural, literary, environmental, and military history. The TBDRP's mission is to support research to understand the pathogenesis of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses and to deliver innovative solutions to prevent, better diagnose, and treat their manifestations for the benefit of military Service members and the American public.

The intent of the FY17 ERP IDA is to solicit research to understand the magnitude and underlying mechanisms of PTE. The FY17 ERP IDA offers two levels of funding. Funding Level I is intended to support high-risk or high-gain research from Principal Investigators (PIs) at or above the level of a postdoctoral fellow (or equivalent), but below the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent). Note that PIs submitting Funding Level I applications will be required to verify their eligibility for this award. Funding Level II is intended to support a more mature, hypothesis-driven research project. To be considered for an FY17 ERP IDA Funding Level II, the PI must be an independent investigator at or above the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent). While not required, applications to either Funding Level I or II should provide relevant preliminary data. Preliminary data for either Funding Level may come from the PI's published work, pilot data, or from peer-reviewed literature. The requested budget level should be appropriate for the scope of research proposed.For Funding Level I:The anticipated direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance for an FY17 ERP IDA award will not exceed $300,000. The maximum period of performance is 2 years. For Funding Level II:The anticipated direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance for an FY17 ERP IDA award will not exceed $500,000. The maximum period of performance is 3 years. FY17 ERP IDA Focus Areas: The research impact for the FY17 ERP IDA is expected to benefit the military, Veteran, and civilian communities.

The FY17 OPORP Orthotics and Prosthetics Outcomes Research Award (OPORA) challenges the scientific community to address which orthotic and prosthetic devices generate the best patient outcomes. Outcomes focused research is used to support evidence-based practice which guides providers in the optimization of care to Service members and Veterans with limb loss and/or limb impairment. It is expected that any research findings will also provide benefit to the general population. Applications involving multidisciplinary collaborations among academia, industry, the military Services, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and other Federal Government agencies are highly encouraged. The FY17 OPORP OPORA is intended to support research that evaluates the comparative effectiveness of orthotic and prosthetic devices using patient-centric outcomes for Service members and Veterans who have undergone limb amputation.

The FY17 HRRP FRA is intended to support functional hearing restoration research that develops and validates assessment techniques and treatment methods using patient-centric outcomes to identify potential predictive indicators for successful treatment of individuals living with functional auditory system deficits. The research in this area should result in refined diagnostic tools and improved evaluation of the effectiveness of therapeutic approaches. Applications involving multidisciplinary collaborations among academia, industry, the military Services, the VA, and other Federal Government agencies are highly encouraged. Under this award mechanism, research may support correlative or observational studies that are associated with an ongoing or completed clinical trial.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) is soliciting investigator initiated research that will further the understanding of potential risk factors for ALS, while supporting the ATSDR National ALS Registry's mission. The National ALS Registry's goals are to estimate the number of new ALS cases each year, estimate the number of people who have ALS at a specific point in time, better understand who gets ALS, and identify what contributing factors, including environmental, may affect ALS. ATSDR is seeking investigator-initiated research that will identify and evaluate risk factors contributing to ALS, with preferred focus in this Notice of Funding Opportunity on factors related to military service, contact sports, traumatic brain injury, neuroinflammation and infectious agents.

The intent of the FY19 PRARP InCASA is to support innovative research that improves the quality of life and care for individuals living with the common symptoms of TBI and/or AD/ADRD and/or their families and care providers, as related to the PRARP's mission (see Section II.A, Program Description). The proposed work should innovatively challenge existing research paradigms or exhibit high levels of creativity within the contexts of the PRARP's mission and vision. This can include innovations and research for symptom reduction (e.g., cognitive, behavioral, function, mood), resiliency factors, increasing or maintaining independence, and support for families and care providers. The research innovations for the FY19 PRARP InCASA are expected to benefit the military, Veteran, and civilian communities. FY19 PRARP InCASA applications should be Innovation- and Impact-based.

The GWIRP Qualitative Research Award mechanism is being offered for the first time in FY17. Qualitative research is a form of social inquiry that seeks to understand the human experience by exploring how people interpret and make sense of their experiences and the world in which they live. The intent of the FY17 GWIRP Qualitative Research Award is to support qualitative research studies that seek to understand the experiences, perceptions, barriers, and beliefs of Veterans suffering from GWI and those responsible for their care. Observations that drive a research idea may be derived from basic discovery, population-based studies, a clinician's firsthand knowledge of patients, or anecdotal data.

The AFRL Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Survivability program will enable the fulfillment of the AFRL responsibility to the AFMC Commander as defined in AFI 10-2607 to assist system, command, and joint program offices with research and development (R&D), modeling and simulation (M&S), experimentation, testing, technology demonstrations, and analysis related to CBRN Survivability to mitigate the evolving CBRN threat environment that faces US and allied forces around the world.
