AFRL is soliciting proposals under Space Focal Plane Arrays, Topic 1, of Broad Agency Announcement BAA-RV-12-01, posted on 5 June 2012. Under this CALL the Air Force Research Laboratory is seeking to develop high performance, high functionality, large format, radiation hardened, high operating temperature medium wavelength infrared (MWIR) sensor chip arrays (SCA) for Persistent Surveillance applications suitable for space Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR). The objective is to demonstrate a higher operating temperature MWIR SCA technology, operating at 130 Kelvin or higher, that efficiently detects low to moderate photon irradiances. Known performance limitations include detector noise, defects, background carrier concentration, passivation and processing.

The Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology Resident Scholar Program, supported by The Dibner Fund, awards stipends of $3,500.00 per month for up to six months for individuals working on a topic relating to the history of science and technology who can make substantial use of collections in the Dibner Library. Historians, librarians, doctoral students, and post-doctoral scholars are welcome to apply. Scholars must be in residence at the Dibner Library during the award period. Scholars wanting to do research in other areas of SI Libraries' Special Collections should apply for the Baird Society Resident Scholar Program.

The goal of the Smart and Connected Health (SCH) Program is to accelerate the development and use of innovative approaches that would support the much needed transformation of healthcare from reactive and hospital-centered to preventive, proactive, evidence-based, person-centered and focused on well-being rather than disease. Approaches that partner technology-based solutions with biobehavioral health research are supported by multiple agencies of the federal government including the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The purpose of this program is to develop next generation health care solutions and encourage existing and new research communities to focus on breakthrough ideas in a variety of areas of value to health, such as sensor technology, networking, information and machine learning technology, decision support systems, modeling of behavioral and cognitive processes, as well as system and process modeling.

The Baird Society Resident Scholar Program was established to support the study of some of SI Libraries' most unique and valuable holdings: its Special Collections. Stipends of $3,500 per month for up to six months are available for individuals working on a topic relating to these collections. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage institutions with expertise and innovative strategies for developing research and mentoring opportunities for undergraduate students from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research to submit applications for 6 month planning grants for the NIH Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) initiative. The BUILD initiative aims to increase the diversity of the NIH-funded workforce by supporting collaborative programs that include novel approaches for enhancing undergraduate education, training, and mentorship, as well as infrastructure support and faculty development to facilitate those approaches. BUILD planning grants are intended to help institutions develop the necessary partnerships and infrastructure needed to be competitive for the BUILD initiative.

The purpose of this Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) is to solicit research proposals for the Chemical and Biological Defense Program, specifically in the area of Advanced and Emerging Threats to support its mission focused on identifying and developing technologies to assist in countering emerging chemical threats across the CWMD spectrum of missions with the following Non-Traditional Agent (NTA) focus areas: a. Expand scientific knowledge required to develop enhanced defensive capabilities against the NTA threat, with emphasis on addressing discrete data gaps associated with emerging chemical threats. b. Build spectral and toxicological databases necessary to advance NTA and emerging threat defense technology. c. Demonstrate fast and agile scientific responses to enhance or develop capabilities (e.g., detect, identify, report, respond) that address NTAs, emerging threats and items of priority interest.

The purpose of Pest Management Alternatives Program (PMAP) is to provide support for the development and implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) practices, tactics, and systems for specific pest problems while reducing human and environmental risks. This purpose addresses the broad goals outlined in the "National Roadmap for Integrated Pest Management," developed by federal and non-federal IPM experts, practitioners, and stakeholders in 2004. The successful management of pest problems in commercial production is facing severe challenges due to regulatory changes, emergence of new pest problems, and the development of pest resistance to present management technologies. The greatest impact on current management technologies is in the production of specialty crops; however, other crops, including grain, forage and fiber, as well as animal health, are also being impacted by these changes.

The purpose of this FOA is to seek, identify and support bold and innovative approaches to broaden graduate and postdoctoral training, such that training programs reflect the range of career options that trainees (regardless of funding source) ultimately may pursue and that are required for a robust biomedical, behavioral, social and clinical research enterprise. Collaborations with non-academic partners are encouraged to ensure that experts from a broad spectrum of research and research-related careers contribute to coursework, rotations, internships or other forms of exposure. This program will establish a new paradigm for graduate and postdoctoral training; awardee institutions will work together to define needs and share best practices.

The goal of the Ohio Third Frontier Technology Validation and Start-up Fund (TVSF) is to create greater economic growth in Ohio based on start-up companies that commercialize technologies developed by Ohio institutions of higher education and other Ohio not-for-profit research institutions. The Technology Validation and Start-Up Fund has been designed to: Support protected technologies developed at Ohio research institutions that need known validation/proof that will directly impact and enhance both their commercial viability and ability to support a start-up company, and Support Ohio start-up and Ohio young companies that license these validated/proven technologies from these Ohio research institutions.

Proposals for potential FY14 Exploratory Development/Applied Research (Budget category 6.2) projects are sought under the following focus areas: 1. Low-profile conformal multi-band (e.g., X/Ku/Ka) multi-beam digital phased array antennas with reduced beam squint and low side lobes and scan loss; 2. Transformative concepts/designs (arrays, waveform, signal processing etc.) to enhance performance and aperture size/power efficiency in high bandwidth troposcatter communications; 3. Passive wavelength filter technologies for the 450-550 nm blue-green underwater communications receiver (band-pass widths as applicable to a variety of laser/LED sources), with wide field-of-view (> +-20 degrees), low insertion loss and high isolation; 4. Innovative concepts and approaches for spectrum co-existence (underlay/overlay, spatio-temporal/spectral management and deconfliction) of military waveforms with commercial wireless communications; 5. Dynamic network (traffic) scheduling, throughput and robustness enhancement codes/algorithms/protocols under nonstationary channel conditions; and 6. Machine learning algorithm/protocol and techniques for autonomous network management ONR is also receptive to highly innovative ideas in other general communications and networking areas that are not within the designated focus areas above, but nonetheless are important to the Navy/Marine Corps, as determined under the synopsis section above.

Individual Warfighter protection against battlefield threats such as ballistics, enemy detection, chemical and biological agents, and IEDs is essential to the continued effectiveness of the fighting force. At the same time, protective materials (clothing/armor, etc.) must also be effective and ensure survival under extremes of environmental (temperature and humidity) conditions without significant sacrifices in Warfighter comfort. Current textile technologies require multiple components to be added to the Warfighter uniform in order to meet these threats. Development of novel multifunctional materials would have significant impact on Warfighter load, increasing their sustainability in the field. In addition to threat survivability, there is a strong interest in the new and growing field of "wearables." The wearables field is of interest insofar as it relates to the integration of electronic capabilities in to textile materials, combat clothing and combat field equipment worn by Warfighters.

The mission of the National Bycatch Reduction Engineering Program (BREP) is to develop technological solutions and investigate changes in fishing practices designed to minimize bycatch of fish (including sponges, deep-sea corals, and shallow (tropical) corals) and protected species (including marine mammals, sturgeon, seabirds, and sea turtles) as well as minimize bycatch injury and mortality (including post-release injury and mortality).

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH), invites research applications for projects that support preclinical development of lead candidate therapeutics, vaccines and related technologies, or diagnostics against NIAID Category A, B, or C priority agents. The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: (1) REU Sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. REU Sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department or may offer interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme. Proposals with an international dimension are welcome. (2) REU Supplements may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements or may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects.

Engineering faculty possess both deep technical expertise in their engineering discipline and the primary responsibility for educating future engineers.  As such, engineering faculty are in a unique position to help address critical challenges in engineering education.  The Research Initiation Grants in Engineering Education (RIGEE) program enables engineering faculty who are renowned for teaching, mentoring, or leading educational reform efforts on their campus to initiate collaborations with colleagues in the learning and cognitive sciences to address difficult, boundary-spanning problems in how we educate engineers.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant applications from small business concerns (SBCs) that propose to develop and translate medical technologies aimed at reducing disparities in healthcare access and health outcomes. Appropriate medical technologies should be effective, affordable, culturally acceptable, and deliverable to those who need them. Responsive grant applications must involve a formal collaboration with a healthcare provider or other healthcare organization serving one or more health disparity populations during Phase I and Phase II.
