For over 20 years the Barbara Bates Center for The Study of the History of Nursing has offered fellowships and research awards of up to $5,000 to support: residence at the Center, ongoing collaboration with nurse historians, and historical research in nursing. It is expected that the research and new materials produced by our scholars will help ensure the growth of scholarly work focused on the history of nursing.

The Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology Resident Scholar Program, supported by The Dibner Fund, awards stipends of $3,500.00 per month for up to six months for individuals working on a topic relating to the history of science and technology who can make substantial use of collections in the Dibner Library. Historians, librarians, doctoral students, and post-doctoral scholars are welcome to apply. Scholars must be in residence at the Dibner Library during the award period. Scholars wanting to do research in other areas of SI Libraries' Special Collections should apply for the Baird Society Resident Scholar Program.

The Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine offers annual fellowships to support research in the history of medicine.  The Countway Library is the largest academic medical library in the United States, and its Center for the History of Medicine holds 250,000 books and journals published before 1920 and is strong in virtually every medical discipline.  The Countway's archives and manuscripts include the personal and professional papers of prominent American physicians, many of whom were associated with HarvardMedicalSchool.  The printed, manuscript, and archival holdings are complemented by prints, photographs, and the collections of the WarrenAnatomicalMuseum.   

Submissions are being accepted for the Annals of Science best paper prize 2014. This prize is awarded annually to the author of an original, unpublished essay in the history of science or technology, which is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. The prize, which is supported by Taylor & Francis, is intended for those who are currently doctoral students, or have been awarded their doctorate within the past four years.

The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation supports emeritus faculty who maintain active research programs with undergraduates in the chemical sciences. The Senior Scientist Mentor Program provides an award of $20,000 over two years for undergraduate stipends and modest research support. Eligibility The Senior Scientist Mentor Program is open to all academic institutions in the States, Districts, and Territories of the United States of America that grant a bachelor's degree or higher in the chemical sciences, including biochemistry, materials chemistry, and chemical engineering. Faculty with emeritus status on or before October 2013, and who maintain active research programs in the chemical sciences, may apply to the program. More than one application per department or institution is permitted. Selection Successful applicants are expected to be closely engaged in a mentoring relationship with undergraduate students. The evaluation will be based on both an assessment of the research proposed and the plans for undergraduate participation in the research. An applicant's history of mentoring undergraduates is favorably viewed. Current Senior Scientist Mentors.

The Air Force Research Laboratory, Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, Photonic Materials Branch (AFRL/RXAP), has a long history of developing advanced materials and techniques for hardening appliations. This program is interested in developing advanced hardening solutions for structural components and systems. The resulting program will seek to mature previously developed concepts for application to component, subsystem, or system level platforms

The Long Term Research in Environmental Biology (LTREB) Program supports the generation of extended time series of data to address important questions in evolutionary biology, ecology, and ecosystem science. Research areas include, but are not limited to, the effects of natural selection or other evolutionary processes on populations, communities, or ecosystems; the effects of interspecific interactions that vary over time and space; population or community dynamics for organisms that have extended life spans and long turnover times; feedbacks between ecological and evolutionary processes; pools of materials such as nutrients in soils that turn over at intermediate to longer time scales; and external forcing functions such as climatic cycles that operate over long return intervals. The Program intends to support decadal projects. Funding for an initial, 5-year period requires submission of a preliminary proposal and, if invited, submission of a full proposal that includes a 15-page project description. Proposals for the second five years of support (renewal proposals) are limited to an eight-page project description and do not require a preliminary proposal. Continuation of an LTREB project beyond an initial ten year award will require submission of a new preliminary proposal that presents a new decadal research plan.?? Successful LTREB proposals address three essential components: A Decadal Research Plan that clearly articulates important questions that cannot be addressed with data that have already been collected, but could be answered if ten additional years of data were collected. This plan is not a research timeline or management plan. The landscape of jobs and work is changing at unprecedented speed, enabled by advances in computer and engineering technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics, deeper understanding of societal and environmental change, advances in the learning sciences, pervasive, intelligent, and autonomous systems, and new conceptions of work and workplaces. This technological and scientific revolution presents a historical opportunity to the Nation and its people, in the creation of new industries and occupations, enhanced productivity and quality of work life, and the potential for more people to participate in the workforce, ultimately yielding sustained innovation and global leadership. But, as history teaches, such changes also come with risks. Some risks are immediate, such as jobs lost to automation or demand for skills not met by current educational pathways. Other equally important risks include new security threats, algorithmic biases, unanticipated legal consequences including privacy implications, dependence on technology and erosion of human knowledge and skills, inadequate workplace policies and practices, or undesirable impact on the built environment.

The NICS Improvement Amendments Act of 2007, Pub. L. 110-180 (NIAA or the Act), was signed into law on January 8, 2008, in the wake of the April 2007 shooting tragedy at Virginia Tech. The Virginia Tech shooter was able to purchase firearms from a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) because information about his prohibiting mental health history was not available to the NICS, and the system was therefore unable to deny the transfer of the firearms used in the shootings. The NIAA seeks to address the gap in information available to NICS about such prohibiting mental health adjudications and commitments, and other prohibiting factors. Filling these information gaps will better enable the system to operate as intended to keep guns out of the hands of persons

The Epigenetic CHaracterization and Observation (ECHO) program will utilize an individual's epigenome to reveal their history of exposure to weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and WMD precursors. The program will build a field-deployable platform capable of using the epigenome to diagnose biothreat exposures and infections and support military forensics operations to counter-WMD proliferation.

NIJ has a longstanding history of collaborating with, and supporting the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) on research, evaluation, and programmatic projects. Over the years, the shared priorities of OVC and NIJ have resulted in a number of collective projects, workshops, and research. In 2013, OVC identified a need for the development of research to build a body of evidence-based knowledge on victims and victimization across several areas of victim services.

STS is an interdisciplinary field of research that uses historical, philosophical, and social scientific methods to investigate STEM theory and practice. It may focus on history and socio-cultural formation, philosophical underpinnings, or the impacts of science and technology on broader societal concerns including quality of life, ethics, and culture. STS researchers strive to understand the research assumptions of STEM fields, and the co-production of STEM and society, meaning the many ways in which cultural, economic, historical, social and political contexts influence developments in STEM, and how those developments reciprocally influence these contexts.

Urban Air Mobility refers to the transport of passengers and goods through the air. Groundbreaking developments in autonomous flight, energy storage and electrical propulsion, and connected infrastructure have set the stage for what many are calling the biggest revolution in the skies since the jet engine was born. Ohio has a storied history in aviation and aerospace, and today remains a vibrant hub for this critical industry.  Join stakeholders spanning government, industry, and academia on Thursday February 27th, 2020 at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, to explore Ohio's opportunity and role in advancing Urban Air Mobility. The day-long symposium will feature panels and speakers which address various elements of the complex Urban Air Mobility (UAM) ecosystem, including: Defining UAM and its specific use cases Vehicle design, enabling technologies, and certification Operational challenges: airspace integration, cyber-security, and traffic management Infrastructure: planning, zoning, and financing (with Public-Private Partnerships) Leveraging Ohio's research, testing, manufacturing, and early use cases for UAM There will be plenty of opportunities for networking throughout the event, such as our lunch and post-event reception. Guests are also encouraged to reach out to the event organizing entities to schedule follow up discussions and/or site visits to tour Ohio's capability centers such as university research labs and the Ohio UAS Center.

The Baird Society Resident Scholar Program was established to support the study of some of SI Libraries' most unique and valuable holdings: its Special Collections. Stipends of $3,500 per month for up to six months are available for individuals working on a topic relating to these collections. Historians, librarians, doctoral students, and post-doctoral scholars are welcome to apply. Scholars must be in residence at the Smithsonian during the award period. While the Libraries' extensive general collections may be used to support scholars' research, the focus of their projects must center around Special Collections. These collections are located in in Washington, DC and New York City, and include:

STS considers proposals for scientific research into the interface between science (including engineering) or technology, and society. STS researchers use diverse methods including social science, historical, and philosophical methods. Successful proposals will be transferrable (i.e., generate results that provide insights for other scientific contexts that are suitably similar). They will produce outcomes that address pertinent problems and issues at the interface of science, technology and society, such as those having to do with practices and assumptions, ethics, values, governance, and policy.

It is a great, international, and competitive contest, which gives an unique opportunity for researchers to move in a new country and develop their own project in cooperation with a local host centre.

The Preservation Technology and Training (PTT) Grants program provides funding for innovative research that develops new technologies or adapts existing technologies to preserve cultural resources. NCPTT does not fund "Bricks and Mortar" grants.
