The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Imaging Scientists - 0 views

    The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) seeks to support up to 10 Imaging Scientists who will work at the interface of biology, microscopy hardware, and imaging software at imaging centers across the United States. "Imaging Scientists" might be engineers, physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists, or biologists who have focused on technology development in either microscopy or data analysis fields. The primary goal of the program is to increase interactions between biologists and technology experts. The Imaging Scientists will have expertise in microscopy hardware and/or imaging software. A successful "Imaging Program" will employ an Imaging Scientist who: a) works collaboratively with experimental biologists on projects at the imaging center; b) participates in courses that disseminate advanced microscopy methods and analysis; c) trains students and postdocs in imaging technology; d) participates in a network of CZI Imaging Scientists to identify needs and drive advances in the imaging field; e) attends twice-yearly CZI scientific workshops and meetings in imaging and adjacent biomedical areas. Each grant will fund salary and fringe benefits for an Imaging Scientist at the center, a modest travel and teaching budget, plus 15% indirect costs. The award period is three years plus an additional two years if the Imaging Program passes a review at year three.

NIBIB Supplements to NCATS CTSA Programs to Support NIBIB Translational Research Schola... - 0 views

    The purpose of this administrative supplement is to facilitate translational research partnerships between junior researchers with quantitative backgrounds (in engineering or computational or physical sciences) and junior clinician-scientists from active CTSA institutions (PAR-15-304, PAR-18-464). The supplement will support the quantitative researcher, the NIBIB Translational Research Scholar, contingent upon his/her collaborating with a clinician-scientist KL2 scholar, the "partnering clinician-scientist". The partnering clinician-scientist will be supported independently of this supplement through the parent KL2 award throughout the duration of the proposed supplement. Both team members will be selected by the KL2 PI. The KL2 PI will assist the NIBIB Translational Research Scholar and the partnering clinician-scientist in developing a translational research project aligned with NIBIBs research mission under the guidance of their identified basic and clinical/translational science mentors. Based on this project, the KL2 PI will submit a supplement request under this FOA.

    The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation supports emeritus faculty who maintain active research programs with undergraduates in the chemical sciences. The Senior Scientist Mentor Program provides an award of $20,000 over two years for undergraduate stipends and modest research support. Eligibility The Senior Scientist Mentor Program is open to all academic institutions in the States, Districts, and Territories of the United States of America that grant a bachelor's degree or higher in the chemical sciences, including biochemistry, materials chemistry, and chemical engineering. Faculty with emeritus status on or before October 2013, and who maintain active research programs in the chemical sciences, may apply to the program. More than one application per department or institution is permitted. Selection Successful applicants are expected to be closely engaged in a mentoring relationship with undergraduate students. The evaluation will be based on both an assessment of the research proposed and the plans for undergraduate participation in the research.     Critical infrastructures are the mainstay of our nation's economy, security and health. These infrastructures are interdependent. They are linked to individual preferences and community needs. For example, the electrical power system depends on the delivery of fuels to power generating stations through transportation services, the production of those fuels depends in turn on the use of electrical power, and those fuels are needed by the transportation services. Social networks, interactions, and policies can enable or hinder the successful creation of resilient complex adaptive systems. The goals of the Critical Resilient Interdependent Infrastructure Systems and Processes (CRISP) solicitation are to: (1) foster an interdisciplinary research community of engineers, computer and computational scientists and social and behavioral scientists, that creates new approaches and engineering solutions for the design and operation of infrastructures as processes and services; (2) enhance the understanding and design of interdependent critical infrastructure systems (ICIs) and processes that provide essential goods and services despite disruptions and failures from any cause, natural, technological, or malicious; (3) create the knowledge for innovation in ICIs so that they safely, securely, and effectively expand the range of goods and services they enable; and (4) improve the effectiveness and efficiency with which they deliver existing goods and services.

    This Biological and Environmental Research/Advanced Scientific Computing Research (BERASCR) Scientific Discovery Thru Advanced Computing (SciDAC) Partnership FOA will enable scientists to conduct complex scientific and engineering computations at a level of fidelity needed to simulate real-world climate conditions, by supporting deep, necessary, and productive collaborations between climate scientists on the one hand and applied mathematicians and computer scientists on the other, that overcome the barriers between these disciplines and consequently fully exploit the capabilities of Department of Energy (DOE) High Performance Computing (HPC) systems in order to accelerate advances in climate science. This SciDAC opportunity targets three particular topics of high-priority for DOE climate research that are expected to be transformed by effective climate-computational partnerships: the development of new and innovative methods to predict sea-level change; the development of a theoretical statistical-numerical framework to improve climate prediction; and the development of improved methods for model component coupling. The next-generation climate model capabilities will contribute to the newly launched Accelerated Climate Model for Energy (ACME) and further its progress toward design of climate codes for leadership class computers and in support of energy science and mission requirements.

    The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) today announced a new program to recruit and retain early-career scientists who are from gender, racial, ethnic, and other groups underrepresented in the life sciences, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Through an open competition, HHMI plans to select scientists early in their training to become Hanna H. Gray Fellows. Each fellow will receive funding for up to eight years, with mentoring and active involvement within the HHMI community.     Sigma Xi, a society of research scientists and engineers that rewards excellence in research and cooperation among scientists in all fields, has been providing undergraduate and graduate students with valuable educational experiences and financial support for more than eighty years. By encouraging close working relationships between students and faculty, the society promotes scientific achievement through hands-on learning. Through the Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research program, the society awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision-related research. Funding can support travel expenses or nonstandard laboratory equipment necessary to complete a specific research project. While membership in Sigma Xi is not a requirement for applying for funding, approximately 75 percent of Grants-in-Aid of Research funds are restricted for use by dues-paying student members or students whose project advisor is a dues-paying member.     The DOE Traineeship in Accelerator Science and Engineering provides support to address critical, targeted workforce development in fields of study that are currently supported by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) research awards. Up to two Cooperative Agreements may provide funding to universities or consortia of universities for up to two years of tuition, stipend, and travel support to students enrolled in specific accelerator science and engineering degree programs, and to provide a modest topic-specific curriculum development and program administration support. Award term is expected to be up to five years, with the possibility of renewal for a second term. This program does not support lines of Research and Development (R&D). Support for accelerator R&D is provided through the High Energy Physics (HEP) General Accelerator R&D and Accelerator Stewardship programs, through accelerator R&D programs elsewhere in DOE, and by other federal agencies. This program is to assist domestic institutions of higher education in enhancing their graduate-level educational efforts to ensure that a diverse and highly trained future population of scientists is available to conduct cutting-edge research in the basic sciences. By training the scientists of the future, this program will ensure the continued vitality of U.S. scientific endeavors that will create knowledge for the public benefit.
