Connecting Mathematics to Other Subject Areas Grants - National Council of Teachers of ... - 0 views

    The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics works to ensure equitable mathematics learning of the highest quality for all students through vision, leadership, the professional development of teachers, and research. To that end, NCTM is accepting applications to its Connecting Mathematics to Other Subject Areas Grants for Grades 9-12 Teachers program, which supports senior high classroom materials or lessons that connect mathematics to other areas of study. For the 2019-20 school year, grants of up to $4,000 each will be awarded to persons currently teaching mathematics in grades 9-12. Materials may be in the form of books, visual displays, computer programs or displays, slide shows, videotapes, or other appropriate media. The focus of these materials should be on showing the connectivity of mathematics to other fields and/or the world around us.

    The Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) of the SC, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), hereby invites applications for basic research that address fundamental challenges within DOE's mission areas of energy, environment and security, and from a perspective that requires new integrated efforts across multiple mathematical, statistical and computational disciplines. This solicitation is for new Mathematical Multifaceted Integrated Capability Centers (MMICCs) to enable greatly enhanced scientific discovery, design, optimization or decision-support capabilities for the increasingly complex systems, processes, and problems that arise in science and energy research. Proposed research tightly focused on the solution of a particular science or engineering problem are outside the scope of this solicitation.These MMICCs will enable applied mathematics researchers to work together in large, collaborative teams to develop the mathematics needed to address significant scientific computing research challenges. The MMICCs allow researchers to take a broader view of the problem as a whole, and devise solution strategies that attack the problem in its entirety by building fundamental, multidisciplinary mathematical capabilities and tools cognizant of both existing and emerging computing paradigms. The MMICCs teams will have the flexibility and technical expertise to consider all aspects of the problem-solving process simultaneously - ranging from the mathematical formulation to the development, analysis, integration of appropriate models and methods, and demonstration of results and capabilities.

    A well-educated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce is a significant contributor to maintaining the competitiveness of the U.S. in the global economy. The National Science Foundation (NSF) Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) program addresses the need for a high quality STEM workforce in STEM disciplines supported by the program and for the increased success of low-income academically talented students with demonstrated financial need who are pursuing associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) [6], [16]. Recognizing that financial aid alone cannot increase retention and graduation in STEM, the program provides awards to Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) to fund scholarships and to advance the adaptation, implementation, and study of effective evidence-based curricular and co-curricular activities that support recruitment, retention, transfer (if appropriate), student success, academic/career pathways, and graduation in STEM. The S-STEM program encourages collaborations among different types of participating groups, including but not limited to partnerships among different types of institutions; collaborations of STEM faculty and institutional, educational, and social science researchers; and partnerships among institutions of higher education and business, industry, local community organizations, national labs, or other federal or state government organizations, if appropriate.

    The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) is a Presidential award established by the White House in 1995. The purpose of the award is to recognize U.S. citizens or permanent residents and U.S. organizations that have demonstrated excellence in mentoring individuals from groups that are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and workforce.     n accordance with 10 USC §2192, Improvement of education in technical fields: general authority regarding education in science, mathematics, and engineering, the National Defense Education Program (NDEP) K-16 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education and outreach is seeking to strategically implant a vehicle to identify and support stronger guidelines for conducting K-16 education and outreach programs. The Department of Defense seeks to diversify its portfolio of support and increase focus on efforts that support the Force of the Future, and align with the Federal and DoD STEM strategies. Enhancing the permeability of ideas into DoD's workforce, especially the STEM workforce, through alliances with academia, industry and various non-traditional partners in STEM should deliver far-reaching sustainable and scalable programs and partnerships. While aligning with the DoD STEM mission, "to attract, inspire, and develop exceptional STEM talent across the education continuum to enrich our current and future DoD workforce to meet defense technological challenges," the Defense STEM Education Consortium (DSEC) should collaboratively work with the Government to provide a cohesive strategy to meet the vision, roles, and goals outlined in the DoD STEM Strategic Plan
