The Soros Justice Fellowships Program's Media Fellowships support writers, print and broadcast journalists, bloggers, filmmakers, and other individuals with distinctive voices proposing to complete media projects that engage and inform, spur debate and conversation, and catalyze change on important U.S. criminal justice issues. The Media Fellowships aim to mitigate the time, space, and market constraints that often discourage individuals from pursuing vital but marginalized, controversial, or unpopular topics in comprehensive and creative ways. Media Fellowships are 12 months in duration, and fellows are expected to make their projects their full-time work during the term of the fellowship. Projects can begin in either the spring or fall of 2014.

Racial Equity 2030 is a global challenge in honor of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation's 90th anniversary. It is a call for bold solutions to drive an equitable future for children, their families and communities. This $90 million challenge seeks ideas from anywhere in the world and will scale them over the next decade to transform the systems and institutions that uphold inequity. Solutions may tackle the social, economic, political or institutional inequities we see today. Teams of visionaries, change agents and community leaders from every sector are invited to join.

The Soros Justice Fellowships fund outstanding individuals to undertake projects that advance reform, spur debate, and catalyze change on a range of issues facing the U.S. criminal justice system. The fellowships are part of a larger effort within the Open Society Foundations to reduce the destructive impact of current criminal justice policies on the lives of individuals, families, and communities in the United States by challenging the overreliance on incarceration and extreme punishment, and ensuring a fair and accountable system of justice.

The Law & Science Program considers proposals that address social scientific studies of law and law-like systems of rules, as well as studies of how science and technology are applied in legal contexts. The Program is inherently interdisciplinary and multi-methodological. Successful proposals describe research that advances scientific theory and understanding of the connections between human behavior and law, legal institutions, or legal processes; or the interactions of law and basic sciences, including biology, computer and information sciences, STEM education, engineering, geosciences, and math and physical sciences. Scientific studies of law often approach law as dynamic, interacting with multiple arenas, and with the participation of multiple actors. Fields of study include many disciplines, and often address problems including, though not limited, to: Crime, Violence, and Policing Cyberspace Economic Issues Environmental Science Evidentiary Issues Forensic Science Governance and Courts Human Rights and Comparative Law Information Technology Legal and Ethical Issues related to Science Legal Decision Making Legal Mobilization and Conceptions of Justice Litigation and the Legal Profession Punishment and Corrections Regulation and Facilitation of Biotechnology (e.g., Gene Editing, Gene Testing, Synthetic Biology) and Other Emerging Sciences and Technologies Use of Science in the Legal Processes

A. Noam Chomsky Global Connections Awards celebrate the power of human connections. The awards recognize distinguished service to the global mission of the STAR Scholars Network. Several individuals with a deep impact on advancing global, social mobility are recognized every year. We live in a time when innovation and creativity in support of humanity are of great importance. The Star Scholars Network recognizes the commitment of concerned people able and willing to make a difference in the lives of others. Nominations for this award are solicited from around the world. The nominee can be from any field. Beginning in 2020, the Star Scholars Network is committed to promoting transnational research, or collaborative research between scholars of two or more countries (e.g., joint publications, research partnerships, etc.). The Global Connections Awards recognize STAR Scholars for their achievements and distinctive contributions to translational research that demonstrates the very best of scholarly collaboration among scholars around the world. In December 2020, the Star Scholars Network will provide awards in three categories: North Star Medal of Lifetime Achievement, Shining Star Achievement in Research Award, Rising Star Emerging Scholar Certificate

The JAMS Foundation/ACR Initiative for Students and Youth provides grant funding for conflict prevention and dispute resolution programs for K-12 students and for adults working with youth populations in ways that directly transfer CRE skills from adults to youth. Each year, the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR) and the JAMS Foundation identify specific subject areas seeking to address otherwise unresolved issues and unmet needs of both general and target youth populations, based on current research and feedback from leaders and stakeholders in the dispute resolution and education fields. Funding contexts for selected subject areas will vary, and may include community-based organizations, alternative education settings (online education, charter schools), after-school programs, court- or juvenile justice-connected programs, as well as programs operating in traditional K-12 school districts.

This program helps safeguard the basic freedoms guaranteed in our Bill of Rights, to help eliminate all forms of prejudice and discrimination, and to assist government agencies to be more accountable to the public. The Herb Block Foundation will also consider contemporary societal issues that may arise.Grants are available nationwide.

The Laura Bassi Scholarship was established by Editing Press in 2018 with the aim of providing editorial assistance to postgraduates and junior academics whose research focuses on neglected topics of study, broadly construed, within their disciplines.

This project seeks to strengthen the entire value chain of judicial response to gender-based violence and domestic violence. Specifically, the development of a comprehensive approach to gender-based violence and domestic violence cases including therapy services, legal orientation for victims, improved traceability of at high risk victims, police investigations, prosecutorial duties and convictions aligned to the current laws in Costa Rica. The selected implementer must work closely with Poder Judicial's Gender Unit and Judicial Police Office for International Affairs, as well as with key institutional leaders and unit chiefs, to strengthen the capacity of Costa Rica's judicial response to gender-based violence and domestic violence. Identify needs, plan trainings, coordinate site visits to relevant partners in the United States such as Family Justice Centers and develop standard operating procedures to improve Judicial response to gender-based violence and domestic violence.

Address weaknesses in partner nations export control, investment screening, critical infrastructure protection, customs and border security institutions to prevent malign state actors from exploiting those weaknesses for their advantage.

NHTSA is responsible for reducing vehicle-related fatalities and injuries on our nation's highways through education, research, safety standards and enforcement activity. States are responsible for laws regulating individual conduct and behavior within their jurisdictions. This includes the regulation of impaired driving. The DOT has a long history of development and evaluation of prosecutor training for the prosecution of impaired driving cases. Beginning in 1991, the DOT committed to developing a comprehensive prosecutorial impaired driving program and other highway safety issues to support States and provide prosecutor training. Previous efforts have created five (5) training courses that State prosecutors may use and developed the delivery of the training to States. These training courses include courtroom preparation for law enforcement as law enforcement and prosecutors work closely to reduce drug impaired driving through enforcement and adjudication. NHTSA's support for prosecutor training development has continued and this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) provides the opportunity to further develop and evaluate training that will increase the knowledge and skills of State and local prosecutors involved in impaired driving cases.

With this solicitation, NIJ seeks proposals from qualified applicants to establish and operate a National Center on Forensics to: 1. Facilitate a partnership amongst: a. A full-service State department of forensic science with a medical examiner function; b. An accredited university of higher education with affiliate medical and law schools; and c. A statewide district attorneys association 2. For the purpose of: a. Providing medico-legal learning opportunities for medical students to train as deputy medical examiners/coroners in underserved rural areas; b. Provide forensic science and legal training to district attorneys, judges, and law enforcement; and c. Develop opportunities as appropriate amongst the designated partners to benefit current and future practitioners in the field

To support further progress in forensics reform, the U.S. Department of State has allocated INCLE Funds to promote forensics reform in the Caribbean. This project will provide training and mentoring to selected Caribbean forensic laboratories to improve their processes and procedures to more quickly and reliably produce evidence which is useful in criminal proceedings.

Community Corrections Supervision organizations are increasingly interested in adopting effective supervision interventions as a growing body of research indicates that staff, well trained in evidence-based practices, improve public safety outcomes. More specifically, the community corrections profession is investing in interventions that support behavior change and are moving away from using only control and containment supervision strategies. Research indicates, when community supervision staff employ evidence based approaches that reduce risk and need, coupled with skillful use of innovations such as Core Correctional Practices (i.e., effective reinforcement, cognitive restructuring and professional alliance), they become adept at helping persons under community supervision identify thinking errors, develop problem-solving skills and have the ability to reinforce these new skills.

With this solicitation, NIJ requests proposals for research to evaluate the effectiveness of the Second Chance Act (SCA) grant program in improving reentry and reducing recidivism. To support this effort, NIJ will fund a phased research evaluation strategy that details and measures the implementation, processes, outcomes, costs, and impacts of the grants awarded under the SCA grant program. This solicitation supports DOJ Strategic Objective 3.1: Combat violent crime, promote safe communities, and uphold the rights of victims of crime.

The goal of this solicitation is to prevent and reduce youth gang involvement and youth gang violence. Overarching objectives and deliverables include:  Reduce and sustain reductions in community youth violence, particularly gun and gang violence, and victimization.  Prevent violence and promote healing from victimization and exposure to violence.  Convene a task force or working group (this may be an existing group) that meets regularly throughout the project period to identify and address service gaps and barriers, and use funding for a wide variety of intervention and suppression strategies targeting youth who are in a gang or at risk of joining a gang.

This solicitation seeks applications for funding to conduct an expansion or extension of one or more ongoing/existing longitudinal research studies that focus on delinquency and crime throughout the life-course, which may include childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. Applicants are encouraged to adopt a holistic approach to the study of child and adolescent development and the emergence, persistence, and desistance of delinquent and criminal offending. The research findings are intended to identify malleable risk and protective factors, which can be effectively targeted in efforts to prevent the onset of delinquency and to intervene in the lives of juvenile and young adult offenders. This solicitation supports the U.S. Department of Justice strategic goal to reduce violent crime and promote public safety.

With this solicitation, NIJ seeks proposals for basic or applied research and development projects. An NIJ forensic science research and development grant supports a discrete, specified, circumscribed project that will: (1) increase the body of knowledge to guide and inform forensic science policy and practice, or (2) lead to the production of useful material(s), device(s), system(s), or method(s) that have the potential for forensic application. The intent of this program is to direct the findings of basic scientific research; research and development in broader scientific fields applicable to forensic science; and ongoing forensic science research toward the development of highly-discriminating, accurate, reliable, cost-effective, and rapid methods for the identification, analysis, and interpretation of physical evidence for criminal justice purposes. Projects should address the challenges and needs of the forensic science community. The operational needs discussed at NIJ's FY 2016 Forensic Science TWG meeting may be found on NIJ.gov. Additional research needs of the forensic science community can be found at the Organization of Scientific Area Committees website. While the goals and deliverables of proposed projects do not necessarily need to result in immediate solutions to the posted challenges or needs, they should speak to them and produce knowledge that adds to work towards eventual resolutions.

This program focuses on high crime communities with concentrated distress and hot spots of crime and directly supports the Department's priorities to reduce violent crime (sometimes associated with gang activity), assist communities struggling with drug abuse, and support law enforcement officers by integrating officers and enforcement strategies into community-based crime reduction efforts.

Through this solicitation, OVC seeks to provide funding to organizations that demonstrate innovative strategies to create, expand, or enhance the use of technology on a national scale (or regional projects that can be replicated nationally) to improve responses, services, and access for victims of crime. OVC anticipates making up to three awards of up to $1.5 million each for a 24-month period of performance, to begin on October 1, 2020.
