The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to promote the discovery of novel small molecules that may enhance the ability of the immune system to selectively recognize and attack cancer cells. These small molecules could be further developed into stand-alone immunotherapeutics or synergistic partners for existing therapies, or as chemical probes for the discovery and validation of novel targets involved in anti-tumor immunity. Investigators from multiple scientific disciplines (immuno-oncology, tumor biology, screening technology, medicinal chemistry, and pharmacology) are encouraged to establish collaborative teams to discover and develop novel small molecule immunomodulators for cancer therapy. This FOA encourages the design of research projects that utilize the following phases of discovery research: 1) assay development specifically designed for immuno-oncology targets with the intent to screen for novel small molecule compounds that show potential as either probes or drugs, or as pre-therapeutic leads; 2) screen implementation for immunomodulatory targets to identify initial screening hits (from high throughput target-focused approaches or moderate throughput phenotypic- and fragment-based approaches); 3) hit validation through secondary orthogonal and counter screening assays, and hit prioritization; and 4) hit-to-lead optimization.

The Conquer Cancer Foundation was created by the American Society of Clinical Oncology to help drive dramatic advances in the prevention, treatment, and cures of all types of cancer. To that end, CCF funds breakthrough cancer research, shares cutting-edge knowledge with patients and physicians, and works to improve the quality of and access to care, with the goal of enhancing quality of life for all who are touched by cancer.

The foundation particularly encourages grant applications for a one-year period that will demonstrate the capabilities of new cancer researchers, or new cancer approaches by established cancer researchers. It is anticipated that this early-stage funding may lead to subsequent and expanded support from a government agency.

Unlike other "Dream Team" grant opportunities offered by SU2C in recent years, the SU2C Dream Team Translational Cancer Research Grant program is open to any type of translational cancer research. The program will support a single translational cancer research project that addresses a critical problem in patient care and has the potential to deliver near-term patient benefit through investigation by a multidisciplinary, multi-institutional, expert team of investigators.

A single grant of up  to $100,000 over two years will be awarded to an established investigator working on novel approaches in gastric cancer research, including the fields of gastric mucosal cell biology, regeneration and regulation of cell growth (not as it relates to peptic ulcer disease or repair), inflammation (including Helicobacter pylori) as precancerous lesions, genetics of gastric carcinoma, oncogenes in gastric epithelial malignancies, epidemiology of gastric cancer, etiology of gastric epithelial malignancies, or clinical research with respect to the diagnosis or treatment of gastric carcinoma.

Unlike other Dream Team grants offered by SU2C in recent years that focused on specific types of cancer, such as colorectal cancer or lung cancer, the SU2C Dream Team Translational Cancer Research Grant program is open to any type of translational cancer research. Applications to the Fiscal Year 2017 (FY17) Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP) are being solicited for the Defense Health Agency (DHA) J9, Research and Development Directorate, by the U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity (USAMRAA) using delegated authority provided by United States Code, Title 10, Section 2358 (10 USC 2358). As directed by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD[HA]), the DHA manages the Defense Health Program (DHP) Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) appropriation. The execution management agent for this Program Announcement is the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). The PRCRP was initiated in 2009 to provide support for research of exceptional scientific merit and is managed by the CDMRP. Appropriations for the PRCRP from FY09 through FY16 totaled $199.8 million (M). The FY17 appropriation is $60M.

Under this award mechanism, the early-career investigator is considered the Principal Investigator (PI), and the application should focus on the PI's research and career development. It should be clear that the proposed research is intellectually designed by the PI and not a product of the Designated Mentor. Preliminary data are not required. However, logical reasoning and a sound scientific rationale for the proposed research must be demonstrated.Key elements of the Career Development Award mechanism are as follows:* Principal Investigator: The PI must be an independent, early-career researcher or physician-scientist within 10 years after completion of his/her terminal degree (excluding time spent in residency or on family medical leave). Time spent as a postdoctoral fellow is not excluded.

The Research Specialist Award is designed to encourage the development of stable research career opportunities for exceptional scientists who want to continue to pursue research within the context of an existing NCI-funded basic, translational, clinical or population science cancer research program, but not serve as independent investigators. These scientists, such as researchers within a research program, are vital to sustaining the biomedical research enterprise. The Research Specialist Award is intended to provide salary support and sufficient autonomy so that individuals are not solely dependent on NCI grants held by others for career continuity.    

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits grant applications proposing exploratory research projects focused on the early-stage development of highly innovative technologies that improve the quality of the samples used for cancer research or clinical care. This includes new capabilities to address issues related to pre-analytical degradation of targeted analytes during the collection, processing, handling, and/or storage of cancer-relevant biospecimens. The overall goal is to support the development of highly innovative technologies capable of maximizing or otherwise interrogating the quality and utility of biological samples used for downstream analyses. This FOA will support the development of tools, devices, instrumentation, and associated methods to preserve or protect sample integrity, or establish verification criteria for quality assessment/quality control and handling under diverse conditions. These technologies are expected to accelerate and/or enhance research in cancer biology, early detection and screening, clinical diagnosis, treatment, epidemiology, or address issues associated with cancer health disparities, by reducing pre-analytical variations that affect biospecimen sample quality.

The Kimmel Scholars Program is designed to bridge the funding gap for gifted young cancer researchers at the very outset of their careers. With the pressure to secure resources eased, Kimmel Scholars are emboldened to pursue innovative, imaginative investigations and to establish their models in independent research, a necessity for obtaining government grants and other backing.

The Sarcoma Foundation of America has developed a program to provide grants to investigators interested in translational science sarcoma research.  Funding of up to $50,000, allowing up to 10 percent indirect costs, is available to cover equipment and supplies in support of research on the etiology, molecular biology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of human sarcomas.

The Neuroendocrine Tumor Research Foundation-AACR Grant represents a joint effort to promote and support innovative cancer research. This grant is available to independent junior and senior investigators to develop and study new ideas and innovative approaches that have direct application and relevance to neuroendocrine tumors. Proposed research may be in any discipline of basic, translational, clinical, or epidemiological cancer research. Applications are invited from researchers currently in the field as well as investigators with experience in other areas of cancer or biomedical research who have promising ideas and approaches that can be applied to neuroendocrine tumor research.

Applications are invited from researchers currently in the field as well as investigators with experience in other areas of cancer or biomedical research who have promising ideas and approaches that can be applied to neuroendocrine tumor research.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to fund research on HIV-associated cancers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) through collaborative efforts between investigators in United States (U.S.) and investigators in LMICs. The FOA will also support the enhancement of research capacity of LMIC institutions for research in this area. The FOA solicits applications for Specialized Center Cooperative Agreements (U54) for research on HIV-associated cancers from research institutions in the U.S. and LMICs.  Each application is required to propose between two to three research projects that address high-priority questions relevant to both the LMIC and the NIH HIV/AIDS research agenda.  The proposed projects may range, as appropriate, from basic research to translational efforts as well as population and implementation studies.

The research proposed for funding must focus on research in cancer etiology, diagnosis, treatment, or prevention and may be basic, translational, or clinical in nature.

The AACR-Aflac, Inc. Career Development Award for Pediatric Cancer Research represents a joint effort to encourage and support junior faculty to conduct pediatric cancer research and establish a successful career path in this field. The research proposed for funding may be basic, translational, clinical, or epidemiological in nature and must have direct applicability and relevance to pediatric cancer.

The purpose of the Fogarty Emerging Global Leader Award is to provide research support and protected time (three to five years) to an early career research scientist from a low- or middle-income country (LMIC) who holds a junior faculty position at an LMIC academic or research institution, as defined by the World Bank (http://data.worldbank.org/about/country-classifications/country-and-lending-groups, including "low-income," "lower-middle-income," and "upper-middle-income" countries). This intensive, mentored research career development experience is expected to lead to an independently funded research career at the LMIC institution or in another LMIC. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications from LMIC scientists from any health-related discipline who propose career development activities and a research project that is relevant to the health priorities of their country under the mentorship of LMIC and U.S. mentors.
