    The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) is seeking small grant (R03) applications to stimulate and facilitate the entry of promising new investigators into research on arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases and injuries. This FOA will provide support for pilot research that is likely to lead to a subsequent individual research project grant (R01).

    This award provides $50,000 per year for two years (total $100,000) to an established investigator working on novel approaches in gastric cancer research, including the fields of gastric mucosal cell biology; regeneration and regulation of cell growth (not as they relate to peptic ulcer disease or repair); inflammation (including Helicobacter pylori) as precancerous lesions; genetics of gastric carcinoma; oncogenes in gastric epithelial malignancies; epidemiology of gastric cancer; etiology of gastric epithelial malignancies; or clinical research in the diagnosis or treatment of gastric carcinoma. The award recipient will be acknowledged at the Research Recognition Celebration at Digestive Disease Week® 2016.

Melanoma Research Foundation Accepting Applications for Research Awards | RFPs | PND - 0 views

    The Melanoma Research Foundation was originally founded in 1996 by Diana Ashby, who through the course of her own melanoma cancer treatment became disheartened at the lack of effective medical treatment options. Driven by her empathy for fellow sufferers and determined to change the trajectory of those impacted by the disease, the Melanoma Research Foundation was born. Though Diana tragically died within a year of its founding, the foundation continues to honor her memory by championing research and disseminating education around the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease. In 2019, a number of research awards will be offered:   CURE Ocular Melanoma Team Award (CURE OM Team) - Grants of up to $250,000 over two years will awarded in support of research on ocular melanoma. Teams should consist of a principle investigator and at least one co-PI (ideally from different institutions). Teams consisting of both basic scientists and clinicians are encouraged, as is the inclusion of a junior scientist.

    The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to solicit applications to participate in the NIAID Autoimmunity Centers of Excellence (ACE), a cooperative network intended to improve the understanding, prevention, and treatment of autoimmune diseases (www.autoimmunitycenters.org). The ACE was founded on the premise that collaborations among basic and clinical scientists can accelerate both fundamental and applied research. The ACE combines Basic and Clinical research programs. This FOA solicits applications for the Basic research program; a companion FOA solicits applications for the Clinical research program. Members of the Basic research program will conduct innovative studies of human autoimmunity within Principal, Pilot, and Collaborative Projects. Members of the Basic and Clinical ACE will work together to design and conduct studies of autoimmune disease pathogenesis and mechanisms of action of immune-modulating agents being tested in ACE clinical trials.

    Cigarette smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, resulting in approximately 480,000 premature deaths and 16 million smoking-related illnesses. Cigarette smoking can lead to increased cardiovascular disease, multiple types of cancer, pulmonary disease, adverse reproductive outcomes, and the exacerbation of chronic health conditions. Annual costs associated with tobacco-related illnesses amount to nearly $280 billion in medical expenses and lost productivity. Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use among U.S. youth and young adults has increased considerably, growing 900% among high school students from 2011 to 2015. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, with approximately 1.5 million new diagnoses and over 550,000 deaths each year. Commercial Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of cancer and cancer deaths. It can cause not only lung cancer but also cancers of the mouth and throat, voice box, esophagus, stomach, kidney, pancreas, liver, bladder, cervix, colon and rectum, and a type of leukemia.

    The purpose of the U.S.-China Program for Biomedical Collaborative Research is to stimulate collaborative basic, translational, and clinical research between United States (U.S.)-based researchers and Chinese researchers in the areas of cancer, environmental health, heart disease, blood disorders, diseases of the eye and visual system, mental health, and neurological disorders.     The primary purpose of this solicitation is to support highly interactive, multi-disciplinary teams, whose research efforts are focused on large-scale discovery of T cell immune epitopes associated with infectious or autoimmune diseases, and rejection of, or tolerance to, transplanted cells/organs/tissues. The discovery of epitopes associated with T cell responses to commensals and how they may be altered by the inflammatory state will also be supported by this solicitation. Validation of these epitopes and defining their role in immune protection or immune-mediated pathogenesis in humans is required. Investigators may include development/refinement of T cell epitope prediction tools as part of their research plan. It is anticipated that the multi-disciplinary teams will minimally include immunologists with the appropriate expertise in epitope identification and validation, and either microbiologists and/or virologists with expertise in the target pathogen(s), clinicians with expertise in the target autoimmune diseases, or clinicians with expertise in transplantation, as appropriate. This program will not support studies related to HIV/AIDS, or allergen epitopes, including those which are infection-related.

    The purpose of the funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to advance our understanding of the modes of transmission of Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), also called human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8); the biology of the initial steps of infection; and risk factors for infection to inform efforts to prevent KSHV transmission and thus prevent Kaposi sarcoma (KS), KSHV-associated multicentric Castleman disease (MCD), primary effusion lymphoma (PEL), and other KSHV-induced diseases in populations living with HIV or at high risk of developing HIV.     Honoring the legacy of Paul A. Marks, MD, President Emeritus of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a distinguished scientist, the Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research recognizes outstanding young investigators who have made significant contributions to increase the understanding of cancer or improve the treatment of the disease through basic or clinical research. The Paul Marks Prize is awarded every other year to up to three investigators. The first recipients were named in 2001. The winners will present their work at a scientific symposium at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and share a cash award of $150,000. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2013 Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research. Nominees must be age 45 or younger on the date of the submission deadline, April 30, 2013. Prize winners will be announced in Fall 2013.
