The purpose of the NIH Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) is to provide support and protected time (three to five years) for an intensive, supervised career development experience in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences leading to research independence. Although all of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) use this support mechanism to support career development experiences that lead to research independence, some ICs use the K01 award for individuals who propose to train in a new field or for individuals who have had a hiatus in their research career because of illness or pressing family circumstances. Other ICs offer separate K01 FOAs intended to increase research workforce diversity.
The purpose of this contract is to establish a NIAID resource entitled "EVALUATION AND TESTING SERVICES (ETS) FOR VACCINES AND OTHER BIOLOGICS FOR INFECTIOUS DISEASES" that provides a suite of preclinical, nonclinical, and clinical testing services for vaccines and other biologic products. While the overall suite of testing services is comprehensive, the intent is to provide individual services on a case-by-case basis for a diverse collection of vaccine and biological product candidates, rather than carry a single product candidate through an entire preclinical development pathway. These services are intended to help a wide variety of investigators in a broad number of scientific areas obtain critical data needed to acquire additional funding, gain prospective partnerships (either for further development or to support Phase I/II/III trials), fulfill regulatory requirements, and complete studies needed to apply for an IND and enter Phase I/II/III trials.
The U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI) are comprised of the three U.S. territories of American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam, as well as the three sovereign nations of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau.The public health care systems in these remote islands require assistance to improve the infrastructure, capacity, and local expertise to prevent HIV in high-risk populations and to effectively address the high burden of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), tuberculosis (TB), and viral hepatitis (VH) in their jurisdictions. Additionally, laboratory capacity is limited, surveillance systems are fragmented, and provision of health care is challenging and costly due to the vast geographic distances and broadly dispersed population throughout islands across the Pacific Ocean. his FOA will assist Liberia in intensifying its surveillance of EVD through training Epidemiologists at the local and National level, providing National Epidemiologist EVD subject matter experts to assist County field teams in their work; as well as provide logistical support, supplies and equipment for Epidemiology Field teams to be able to conduct EVD surveillance. Laboratory systems will be strengthened through the assistance of a Senior Laboratory Data specialist, upgrades to the Laboratory Data Integration systems, and provision of much needed laboratory supplies, reagents, and equipment. EVD Chain of Transmission activities will include assessment of facilities throughout the country; and epidemiological active surveillance country wide, at the county level. Health Care Workers and community health leaders will be trained on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) activities, and infection prevention and control (IPC) activities.
The TBDRP's vision is to prevent the occurrence, better diagnose, and resolve or minimize the impact of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses, with emphasis on burden of disease. The TBDRP's mission is to support research to understand the pathogenesis of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses and to deliver innovative solutions to prevent, better diagnose, and treat their manifestations for the benefit of military Service members and the American public.
The Idea Development Award promotes ideas that have the potential to yield high-impact findings and new avenues of investigation. This award mechanism supports conceptually innovative research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries in TSC research and/or improvements in patient care. Research projects should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong preliminary data and scientific rationale.
The intent of the research funded through this award is to (1) support research to alleviate, stabilize, or characterize the symptoms or deficits common to TBI and AD/ADRD, and (2) reduce the burden of care on the caregiver for individuals living with the common symptoms of TBI and AD/ADRD. Research may be proposed to either facet of the intent. Both are equally important. As part of the research strategy, all applications must include cognitive, neuropsychological, or otherwise appropriate measures.The FY17 PRARP QUAL is open to Principal Investigators (PIs) at or above the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent) from any field or discipline. As part of the application, the PI should demonstrate that the study team has experience in both TBI and AD/ADRD research. Preliminary data, while not required, are encouraged. Preliminary data may come from the PI's published work, pilot data, or from peer-reviewed literature. Applications should also address how all of the included study measures address the research strategy and the study's hypothesis or hypotheses.The anticipated direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance for an FY17 PRARP QUAL will not exceed $500,000. The purpose of this initiative is to stimulate research in promoting caregiver health using self-management. Caregiving is an important science area since the number of people living longer with chronic conditions is growing. Informal caregivers (lay caregivers) are defined as unpaid individuals (spouses, partners, family members, friends, or neighbors) involved in assisting others with activities of daily living and/or medical tasks. Formal caregivers are paid, delivering care in one's home or care settings (daycare, residential care facility). This concept focuses on informal caregivers.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) plans to provide up to $40 million in total USAID funding over a period of five-years. The purpose of the activity is to increase utilization of FP services through universal health coverage. It will be accomplished through: 1) strengthening capacity to more effectively train medical providers and community health workers in FP in both the public and private sectors; and, 2) focusing and expanding public sector FP information and services to high need groups such as adolescents, youth, newlyweds, and postpartum girls and women. The results this activity will achieve include: 1. Increased qualified FP workforce in public and private sectors, and 2. Increased availability of public sector FP outreach contacts and services, particularly for adolescents and youth.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is associated with the Beau Biden Cancer MoonshotSM Initiative that is intended to accelerate cancer research. The purpose of this FOA is to establish Centers of collaborating investigators with the goal of identifying and advancing research opportunities for translating immunotherapy concepts for children and adolescents with cancer toward clinical applications. Specifically, this FOA targets the following area designated as a scientific priority by the Blue Ribbon Panel (BRP): Recommendation (B) that calls for the establishment of a pediatric immunotherapy translational science network. The network was envisioned by the BRP as focusing on identifying new targets for immunotherapies, developing new pediatric immunotherapy treatment approaches (e.g., cancer vaccines, cellular therapy, combinations of immunotherapy agents, and others), and defining the biological mechanisms by which pediatric tumors evade the immune system. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, is characterized by chronic inflammation of gastrointestinal tract. In 2015, approximately three million US adults reported having a diagnosis of IBD and the estimated number has increased greatly from 1.8 million since 1999. While the exact cause is unknown, the severity and progression of the disease largely impacts the patients’ quality of life and imposes huge financial burden to the US healthcare system. The purpose of this announcement is to 1) establish a new IBD registry to estimate incidence of IBD in the adult and pediatric populations and extrapolate to the US population; 2) describe the natural history and outcomes of IBD; 3) determine racial/ethnic variation in the detection and management of IBD; and 4) identify evidence-based strategies to improve disease outcomes. The results are anticipated to enhance understanding of the impact of IBD on the overall health of affected persons and the impact of various clinical practices and healthcare delivery approaches on the disease outcomes.
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement [FOA] submitted through the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative is to stimulate the development and validation of novel tools and analytical methods to target, identify and characterize non-neuronal cells in the brain. This FOA complements previous and ongoing cell-census and tool development efforts initiated under BRAIN, RFA-MH-14-215 and RFA-MH-14-216, that have focused almost exclusively on neuronal cells. The cutting-edge tools and methods developed under this opportunity should focus specifically on providing improved points of entry into non-neuronal cell-types (glial and vascular) to enable their inventory and characterization within the CNS and help define how these cells interact among each other and with neuronal cells to impact functional circuitries. Plans for validating the utility of the tool/technology/method and demonstrating its advantage over currently available approaches will be an essential feature of a successful application. Tools that can be used in several species or model organisms rather than in a single species are especially desirable.
The purpose of this FOA is to invite applications that investigate aspects of lymphatic vessel physiology, development and pathophysiology related to health and diseases of the digestive system. Studies to understand the factors that control local lymphatic vessel functional anatomy and physiology and development during health or disease in this system and its organs, and the mechanisms by which alterations of lymphatic vessel function affect organ function, are of interest. However, studies with the major focus on immune mechanisms, role of lymphatics in cancer metastasis and study of lymphatic vessels in organs other than those from the digestive system will not be considered responsive.

The Epilepsy Foundation has announced its seventh annual epilepsy "Shark Tank" competition for the most innovative ideas in epilepsy and seizure treatment and care.
Some examples of novel ideas include a system to detect seizures with the capacity to provide early warning to the patient or family; a treatment that stops a seizure from progressing; a system that helps patients manage their daily treatment; a device that prevents physical injury that patients may experience when in seizure; or an entirely new product concept with the promise to dramatically improve the lives of people with epilepsy.
Selected finalists will receive international recognition and compete for grants totaling $150,000 to support the development and commercialization of important new products, technologies, or therapeutic concepts.
As many as six finalists will be selected to present at the 2018 Epilepsy Pipeline Conference (San Francisco, February 22-23, 2018). Each presenter will have five minutes to present the concept, followed by five minutes of questioning. The Shark Tank event will feature live voting among audience members and a panel of judges (Sharks) representative of industry, advocacy, investors, and the research and medical communities. The winning project, or projects, deemed to be the most innovative will be announced at the conclusion of the competition.
To be eligible, applicants must demonstrate an ability to move the proposed plan to completion, showing how the prize can accelerate any step along the path to market. Inventors who submitted ideas for previous Shark Tank competitions are encouraged to re-submit their ideas if substantial progress has been made.
