The awards pursuant to this Notice of Funding Opportunity are contingent upon the availability of funds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) is soliciting investigator-initiated research that will help expand and advance our understanding about what works to prevent overdose from prescription and illicit opioids by developing and piloting, or rigorously evaluating novel primary or secondary prevention interventions. The intent of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to: (1) build the scientific base for the primary or secondary prevention of opioid overdose, and (2) encourage collaboration of scientists from a spectrum of disciplines including public health, epidemiology, law enforcement, social work, economics, and criminal justice to perform research that can identify ways to prevent opioid overdose more effectively. Interventions can be strategies, programs, or policies. Ultimately, this research is intended to improve state and local health departments’ ability to implement and improve interventions focused on preventing opioid-related deaths. Researchers are expected to develop and pilot, or rigorously evaluate novel primary or secondary prevention interventions that address prescription or illicit opioid overdose. Primary prevention approaches are expected to aim to prevent opioid misuse, abuse, and overdose before it occurs. Secondary prevention approaches are expected to focus on the more immediate responses to opioid overdose, such as emergency department services and linkage to treatment immediately following a nonfatal overdose.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for R34 applications seeks to support: (a) pilot and/or feasibility testing of innovative new, revised, or adapted prevention intervention approaches to prevent or delay the initiation and onset of drug and alcohol use, the progression to misuse or problem use or alcohol and other substance use disorder, reduce drinking and driving and deaths related to impaired driving, prevent suicide attempts (nonfatal and fatal), and the drug- or alcohol-related acquisition or transmission of HIV infection and viral hepatitis among diverse populations and settings; and, (b) pre-trial feasibility and acceptability testing for prevention services and systems research. It is expected that research conducted via this mechanism will consist of studies that are a pre-requisite for preparing and submitting subsequent applications for larger scale drug or alcohol abuse prevention and/or drug- or alcohol-related HIV prevention intervention studies. This FOA does not support applications for which the sole focus is development of intervention protocols, manuals, or the standardization of protocols. Any intervention development work must be imbedded within a pilot/feasibility study. Of particular interest is prevention research that addresses current public health priorities and priority settings and systems.

The PIP is intended to support high-risk/innovative research and development efforts to establish and maintain a sustainable pipeline for the prevention of HIV acquisition/transmission. The PIP will support discovery and development of novel and under-explored nBP candidates/strategies, nBP delivery strategies, studies of the impact of nBP prevention strategies on genital and gastrointestinal (GI) mucosa function and emerging technologies that support microbicides, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPT) for prevention of HIV acquisition/transmission.

The purposes of the NCIPC extramural violence prevention research program are to: 1. Build the scientific base for the prevention of violence by helping to expand and advance our understanding of the primary prevention of interpersonal violence. 2. Encourage professionals from a wide spectrum of disciplines of epidemiology, behavioral and social sciences, medicine, biostatistics, public health, health economics, law, and criminal justice to perform research in order to prevent violence more effectively. 3. Encourage investigators to propose research that involves the development and testing of primary prevention strategies, programs and policies designed to prevent interpersonal violence and reduce violence-related outcomes as well as dissemination, implementation, and translation research to enhance the adoption and maintenance of effective strategies among individuals, organizations, or communities.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2018 Strategic Prevention Framework - Partnerships for Success grants. The purpose of this grant program is to address one of the nation's top substance abuse prevention priorities; underage drinking among persons aged 9 to 20. At their discretion, states/tribes may also use grant funds to target up to two additional, data-driven substance abuse prevention priorities, such as the use of marijuana, cocaine, or methamphetamine, etc. by individuals ages 9 and above. SPF-PFS is designed to ensure that prevention strategies and messages reach the populations most impacted by substance abuse. The program extends current established cross-agency and community-level partnerships by connecting substance abuse prevention programming to departments of social services and their community service providers. This includes working with populations disproportionately impacted by the consequences of substance use; i.e., children entering the foster care system, transitional youth, and individuals that support persons with substance abuse issues (women, families, parents, caregivers, and young adults).

The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) is seeking applications from qualified organizations for Injury Control Research Center (ICRC) grants. These centers will conduct high quality research and help translate scientific discoveries into practice for the prevention and control of fatal and nonfatal injuries and violence that support NCIPC’s priorities and mission. ICRCs are expected to blend Outreach, Training and Education, and Research activities into a program to reduce the number, risk, and public health impact of injury and violence in the U.S. The over-arching goals for the NCIPC ICRC program are to: Build the scientific base for the prevention and control of fatal and nonfatal injuries and violence. Integrate, in the context of a national program, professionals from a wide spectrum of disciplines of epidemiology, behavioral and social sciences, medicine, biostatistics, public health, health economics, law, criminal justice, and engineering to perform research and provided technical expertise in order to prevent and control injuries and/or violence more effectively. Encourage investigators to propose research that involves intervention development or translation of effective programs among individuals, organizations, or communities. Provide technical assistance to injury and/or violence prevention and control programs in their geographic region, including other researchers; universities; medical institutions; community groups; state and local government agencies, public health agencies; and policy makers. Act as sources of injury and/or violence prevention and control information for their constituents and stakeholders at the local, state, tribal, national, and global levels.

The intended outcome of this program is to advance efforts to improve and develop state drug residue prevention programs. It is necessary to provide assistance to state drug residue programs that need a stronger foundation to promote the prevention of illegal drug residues in animal derived foods through educational outreach and training. This program is intended to ensure drug residue prevention programs are developed to protect consumer exposure to drug residues in the edible products of food animals and support activities related to drug residue prevention. In addition, these awards will assist state agencies to better direct their programs to reduce the outcomes of illegal drug residues in animal derived foods. This cooperative agreement program (CAP) will focus on outreach, education and training. In addition, grantees will focus on performing targeted on-site assessments related to drug residue violations and best practice visits to industry and individuals to communicate proper drug use and promote effective management practices for drug residue prevention.

Prevent Blindness Ohio is accepting applications for its 2014 Young Investigator Student Fellowship Awards for Female Scholars in Vision Research. The Fellowship Program is designed to provide support for outstanding female scientists committed to pursuing biomedical, behavioral or clinical research careers relevant to the mission of Prevent Blindness Ohio - to prevent blindness and preserve sight. 

The AHA is interested in the science community exploring all aspects of prevention, which can assist the AHA in reaching its 2020 Goals and overall mission of building healthier lives free of cardiovascular disease and stroke. To that end, the AHA pursues research from the basic, clinical and population sciences. This RFA will require that each submission have an overall application from the Center Director, as well as three proposals from project Principal Investigators: One proposal addressing basic science discovery in prevention One proposal addressing clinical science discovery in prevention One proposal addressing population science discovery in prevention A Center application can comprise projects from more than one institution, as long as there is a named sponsoring institution, where the Center Director is located and will manage the oversight and financial responsibilities. Thus, applications should convey how these different areas of science will collaborate, both in their science discoveries and through joint team communication and integration. 

The purpose of this program is to implement comprehensive HIV prevention programs to reduce morbidity, mortality, and related health disparities. In accordance with the National HIV/AIDS Strategy (http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/uploads/NHAS.pdf) and CDC's High-Impact HIV Prevention (HIP) approach (http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/strategy/hihp/index.htm), this FOA focuses on HIV in the nation by reducing new infections, increasing access to care, and promoting health equity. These goals will be achieved by enhancing community-based organizations' capacities to increase HIV testing, link HIV-positive persons to HIV medical care, increase referrals to Partner Services (PS), provide prevention and essential support services for HIV-positive persons and high-risk persons with unknown/negative serostatus, and increase program monitoring and accountability. Standard performance measures for HIV prevention programs that are consistent with the focus of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy on improving performance and accountability are included in this FOA.

The purpose of this FOA is to fund a single coordinating center to formalize and centralize support for the HEAL Preventing Opioid Misuse and Opioid Use Disorder in Older Adolescents and Young Adults (ages 16-30) initiative administered by NIDA. The coordinating center will provide administrative and scientific, technical, and logistical support for coordination of common data elements, data harmonization, data sharing across projects; methodological and statistical support in the areas of study design, complex statistical analyses, economic analyses, implementation research; coordination of stakeholder and partnership engagement activities; developing and coordinating a HEAL prevention initiative publication and dissemination plan, providing logistical support for in-person meetings, conference calls, and webinars that include HEAL prevention grantees, funders and stakeholders. In addition, the coordinating center also will assist with collecting data on prevalence, incidence, risk and protective factors, and contextual factors in the identified populations and settings that will inform HEAL prevention research projects.

In Uganda, key and priority populations (KP/PP) have a higher prevalence of HIV and more difficulties accessing prevention and care services. This NOFO will improve the development, implementation, and monitoring of accessible, appropriate, and targeted HIV combination prevention for KP/PP in Uganda. This NOFO will result in an increased use of these services by KP/PP, which will result in these high risk sub-populations attaining the 90-90-90 goals and achieving epidemic control by 2020. The recipient will provide technical assistance (TA) to CDC comprehensive regional implementing partners (IPs) on developing, monitoring, and evaluating new ways to provide combination prevention to KP/PP; implementing and evaluating a nationwide training on gender and sexual identity; and cascading a KP training nationwide to health workers to reduce stigma and discrimination. Strategic information (SI) activities, including improving the collection of routine surveillance data, mapping KP/PP hotspots, and evaluating interventions will support the development and implementation of accessible, appropriate, targeted combination prevention for KP/PP. The recipient will support the Ugandan Ministry of Health (MOH) to improve surveillance of HIV in KP/PP (including population size estimates and bio-behavioral studies) and develop comprehensive guidelines for service provision to KP/PP.

The 2017 CDC STD Surveillance Report documented continued steep and sustained increases in the three reportable STDs - gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis. Congenital syphilis rates reached a 20-year high in 2017. Healthcare providers and health systems remain at the forefront of the battle against STDs. Provider education, technical assistance, and clinical capacity building are critical pieces for a foundation of comprehensive STD clinical prevention in healthcare settings. A dynamic and complex healthcare landscape demands innovative methods to reach both clinicians and healthcare settings from a variety of sectors throughout the U.S in order to meet the goal of optimal STD clinical prevention implementation in the clinical care setting. The purpose of this NOFO is to support The National Network of Sexually Transmitted Diseases Clinical Prevention Training Centers (NNPTC). This network is charged with improving the capacity of healthcare professionals, clinical sites and healthcare systems to employ state-of-the-art knowledge to diagnose, manage, treat and counsel individuals with and at-risk for STDs in order to reduce STD morbidity and improve sexual health on an individual, local and national level. The Ohio Affiliate of  Prevent Blindness is accepting applications for its 2018 Young Investigator Student Fellowship Awards for Female Scholars in Vision Research. The Fellowship Program is designed to provide support for outstanding female scientists committed to pursuing biomedical, behavioral or clinical research careers relevant to the mission of Prevent Blindness - to prevent blindness and preserve sight.  Grants will be awarded for the summer 2018 session.  Awards will range from $3000-$5000 depending upon the availability of funds. The deadline for receipt of applications is Feb. 15, 2018. Applicants must be post-baccalaureate students enrolled in a master's or doctorate program during the summer of 2018, female, citizens or permanent residents of the United States, and conducting their research with a recognized academic institution in the State of Ohio. Applications from diverse fields in the health sciences including, but not limited to ophthalmology, optometry, nursing, genetics, public health, nutrition, gerontology, and bioengineering, are appropriate to the goals of this fellowship award. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages NIH Research Project Grants (R01) to test practical, sustainable, and cost efficient adaptations of efficacious strategies or approaches to prevent and treat diabetes and/or obesity. Research focused on the prevention or reversal of obesity, prevention of type 2 diabetes, improved care of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, or the prevention or delay of the complications of these conditions is encouraged. The approaches tested should have the potential for wide dissemination and implementation outside of an academic setting such as in routine clinical practice or communities at risk.

This notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) supports the acceleration of a comprehensive HIV prevention, care, and treatment program to achieve HIV epidemic control in selected Health Zones (HZs) in Kinshasa province. This aims to provide evidence-based interventions, including targeted HIV testing, to find more people living with HIV (PLHIV), especially among eligible contacts of HIV positive index cases, as well as community outreach through Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OVC) services; HIV prevention services; TB/HIV prevention, diagnosis, and treatment services; Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) for general population and key population (KP); and associated laboratory and strategic information (SI) services. Through a stigma-free approach, the recipient will provide direct support and technical assistance to accelerate the HIV service delivery cascade and improve data quality and utilization for decision-making. The recipient will also work closely with the Ministry of Health (MOH) to strengthen the technical capacity of provincial and HZ Teams. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications that seek to support the identification of shared mechanisms and development of innovative interventions to address multimorbidity (or multiple chronic conditions (MCCs)) and its consequences. Intervention research supported by this initiative should be designed to study: (1) mechanisms or pathways that prevent MCCs, including the identification of early biomarkers, behavioral pathways, and individual and contextual risk factors and interactions that contribute to the development of common MCCs; (2) targeted therapies and management, including self-management, of MCCs to delay progression and prevent onset of new diseases; and (3) innovative health care partnership models for managing or treating MCCs. Studies may include shared mechanisms, and assessments of interactions between risk factors and interventions that address MCCs at different periods of the lifespan in diverse populations. Use of innovative technologies to assess and intervene on risk factors and pathways are encouraged. Studies may also include those that make use of existing data and/or data linkages to explore new research questions that may be helpful in understanding the impact of mechanisms in isolation or in combination. Of particular interest are interventions that target prevention and treatment of multiple chronic health conditions, including study designs that address therapeutic targets for preventing co-occurring multiple chronic conditions.
