Top 20 nutrients for healthy bones - Better Bones - 0 views

  •
Depending on how we count them, there are at least 20 bone-building nutrients which are essential for optimal bone health - "essential" in that our bodies cannot manufacture them, so we must get them from our food and drink. Let's take a quick look at them, one by one, so you can get a better idea of their roles in bone health and how much of each you should be getting. Remember, none of these nutrients does its work in isolation - you need some of each and every one, so they can all work together to keep your bones standing strong all your life long.

The Heart Scan Blog: Sterols should be outlawed - 0 views

  •
While sterols occur naturally in small quantities in food (nuts, vegetables, oils), food manufacturers are adding them to processed foods in order to earn a "heart healthy" claim. The FDA approved a cholesterol-reducing indication for sterols , the American Heart Association recommends 200 mg per day as part of its Therapeutic Lifestyle Change diet, and WebMD gushes about the LDL-reducing benefits of sterols added to foods. Sterols--the same substance that, when absorbed to high levels into the blood in a genetic disorder called "sitosterolemia"--causes extravagant atherosclerosis in young people. The case against sterols, studies documenting its coronary disease- and valve disease-promoting effects, is building

Nutritional diseases - modern-diets-and-nutritional-diseases.com - 0 views

"What Are Nutritional Diseases? In their book, The Modern Nutritional Diseases, Fred and Alice Ottoboni, retired Public Health Service scientists, list the following. * Obesity * Diabetes II * Cardiovascular Diseases * Stroke. * Cancer. Modern nutritional diseases are just that. They haven't always been the ugly part of our life. They were introduced when people had to get their food from grocery stores, when people traded their whole foods from the family farm for those manufactured by the food processing industry. "

WHFoods: What are your thoughts on coconut oil? - 0 views

  •
"Coconut oil is a staple food in many parts of the world. You can travel to Thailand, the Caribbean, parts of Brazil, countries in Africa, and the vast southern half of India and find this oil on center stage when it comes to delicious and healthy cuisine. The popularity of this oil is partly due to its stability, ease of use in cooking, and taste. Like all foods, the quality of coconut oil has a lot to do with its potential health benefits. Refined coconut oil that has been heavily processed, bleached, and deodorized is not going to provide you with the same desirable balance of fatty acids, or the same beneficial polyphenol content, as either virgin coconut oil or less extensively refined coconut oil (sometimes called "naturally refined" by the product manufacturers). Choosing organic coconut oil is a good way to assure you of higher quality in this regard. However, at the same time, there is such a long track record of coconut oil use in many cultures and their food traditions that I will be surprised if the research doesn't eventually show some key health benefits. Some of these health benefits are likely to be related to the unusual fatty acid composition of coconut oil, and other benefits are likely to be associated with the special polyphenols found in this oil (when virgin or very lightly refined). Also, it's the natural pattern of fats found in coconut oil that seems especially important to me, in addition to the blend of fats in the overall diet that results from the inclusion of coconut oil. If you decide to include coconut oil in your diet, I therefore recommend that you continue to use other high-quality oils (like extra virgin olive oil) as well. One of the practical benefits of coconut oil is that it has a higher smoke point than many other oils, so that you can cook with it at normal stovetop temperatures and have less concern about oxidation. The smoke point for lightly refined coconut oil is about 450ºF (232ºC) while the smoke point for unrefi

Strictly speaking, it is not a vitamin since human skin can manufacture it, but it is referred to as one for historical reasons. It is often known as calciferol. The major biologic function of vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium, helping to form and maintain strong bones. It promotes bone mineralisation in concert with a number of other vitamins, minerals and hormones. Without vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, soft or misshapen. Vitamin D prevents rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults -- skeletal diseases that result in defects that weaken bones. This book gathers international research on the leading-edge of the scientific front.

Nutrition in Bread: The Problems with Enriched White Flour | The Diabetes Club - 0 views

  •
Manufacturers do not like whole grain products because they go bad quickly and attract pests. These pests seem to be "highly educated" on white flour because knowing probably that it is not good, they stay away from it. We should follow their example. Instead, we seemed to be hooked on the white "enriched" flours that not only have been stripped of their omega 3 fats, most of their vitamins and minerals and fiber, but they are also bleached and treated with different chemicals.

Vitamin D must be an oil-based capsule, a gel-cap, not a tablet. -The Heart Scan Blog - 0 views

  •
"Lisa is one of early success stories: a heart scan score of 447 in her early 40's, modest reduction of CT heart scan score three years ago. However, Lisa had a difficult time locating oil-based vitamin D. There has, in fact, been a national run on vitamin D and I'm told that even manufacturers are scrambling to keep up with the booming demand. So, she bought tablets instead and was taking 3000 units per day. She came in for a routine check. Lisa's 25-OH-vitamin D3: 17 ng/ml, signifying severe deficiency, the same as if she were taking nothing at all. (Recall that we aim for 50 ng/ml.) In other words, vitamin D tablets do not work. It is shameful. I see numerous women taking calcium tablets with D--the vitamin D does not work. I've actually seen blood levels of zero on these preparations. "
