This blog entry provides us with very useful ideas of using Twitter in education.

I must admit that when I first heard about Twitter I thought it represented the apex of what concerns me about internet technology: solipsism and sound-bite communication. While I obviously spend a great deal of time online and thinking about the potential of these new networked digital communication structures, I also worry about the way that they too easily lead to increasingly short space and time for conversation, cutting off nuance and conversation, and what is often worse how these conversations often reduce to self-centered statements. When I first heard about Twitter I thought, this was the example par excellence of these fears, so for many months I did not investigate it at all.

This article describes ways to use twitter to enhance academic work. With twitter, the class goes on beyond the assigned class period because (i) the technology is appealing, (ii) students have much to say/ask, (iii) students can 'talk' without concern for "who's (physically) in class that might make fun of me", and (iv) students respond in their own time. Twitter has the dual benefits of quasi-synchronous and asynchronous communication.

This is awesome. Thank you for sharing. I could definitely use the sites here. One I'm intrigued by is the Book Creator and the Meme generator! Both can definitely be used to spice up writing classes.

Great tools for student to create in the online course.

This abstract written by an engineering professor at Cal Poly Engineering offers research and support for a new trend in education called, "the Inside-Out Classroom." The abstract describes how the inside out classroom is a win-win-win strategy for teaching with technology. Instructors create "chunks" of core content in a digital, lecture-capture format. These resources are then stored online for students. These are short videos that students watch before attending class sessions. Students study core content for a course online on their own, and then complete assignments during in-class sessions.

For those who may be a bit unclear on how to use Twitter for a class, the article includes varied strategies. Some of the ideas have already been mentioned in our discussions and responses as we worked through the second module, but there are a few other points that may be noteworthy. Second, the article affirms some of the ideas already shared, especially for those of us who were initially unfamiliar with twitter's potential application.

I'm still not convinced I want to use Twitter in my classes, but this gives a lot of good information.

In my search for good audio tools, I found UJAM, a free tool for recording your voice, creating a song, converting your voice to an instrument...you name it. You can see a beta walk through on YouTube, but basically, you sign up, record into your computer's microphone, and make a few manipulations--presto, a song. You can edit chords, the song melody, add instruments, etc. Or you can turn your voice into an instrument! This might be a good tool for musicians, music teachers, and certainly for budding rock stars! Maybe it would be good for unique exercise in a poetry class...the spoken word as song.

Creative Commons licenses provide a flexible range of protections and freedoms for authors, artists, and educators. It provides educators with access to images, videos, music, and graphic all with less restrictive rights for using the material. For example, you go right from Creative Comments to Flickr images that you can use. The one caveat while searching for content, be careful not to use a different search term, because you will be searching in the regular libraries. When want search for a different, go back to Creative Commons and search from there.

If you haven't seen this, it is a safer place to post educational videos you make for class. It is also a great place to search for related media to use in class. You can set up an account so that only certain people can see your videos if you want.

This was used in a class I took and I found it a fascinating tool to doing a poll or survey for a class. It allows students to use the tech that they generally already use to a great extent - such as responding by text from the phone using a code specific to that poll, responding via twitter, or on the PollEv.com site directly. I haven't integrated this yet into a class, but I can really see potential here after using it in a class

Lucidchart is a great mind-mapping tech tool that can be used for content creation, group work, asynchronous AND synchronous communication! If you're looking for an "elective" or any of the other categories I just mentioned to round out your "scrapbook," this is one you might want to check out!
