Accessibility - Creators Justin Harris 2010-09-04 - 2 views

  • I don't know if there is some kind of script ning could run to see if someone is using a screen reader, and if so, could they generate a different admin interface? That way, those who don't need any changes could keep using the service as normal. But then blind users could check or uncheck items in a feature list. Then, depending on the feature, maybe ning could auto place the feature in a good spot, so that the users network still remains organizedd. I don't know if this would work. Just an idea. I just know that I would like to be able to manage my network 100% independently.

Can this be done? If Ning can do it reasonably glitchlessly, I'll forgive them all the silly "Giand Swiss Knife" gimmicks like leaderboard....

" * Posted by Justin Harris on September 4, 2010 at 12:20pm in Bugs and Issues Hello, I am a blind network creator and have noticed a few problems with ning accessibility. For the most part, the platform is quite accessible. But here's what I've found. 1. The area where you can add or take away features in your network is not accessible because of the drag and drop. While drag and drop can be done in some instances, it is very dificult, and at other times, it doesn't work at all. I always have to have someone help me with it. 2. I can't get ning chat to work. I've even tried third party solutions, but they use flash, which is not very blind friendly. I don't know if anything can be done about either of these problems, but I really hope so. I still want a site that looks good, but at the same time, accessibility in those areas would be nice. The alt and title attributes | 456 Berea Street - Roger Johansson - 2004 - 0 views

  • Use the alt attribute to provide text for visitors who, for whatever reason, can’t see the images in your document. This includes visitors using browsers that cannot display images or have image display disabled, visually impaired visitors, and screen reader users. Alt text is to be used instead of an image, not as additional information.
  • And don’t use the alt attribute for text that you want to appear as a tool tip. It’s not the way it was meant to be used, and as far as I know, it only works like that in Internet Explorer for Windows and in Windows versions of the ancient Netscape 4.*. No Mac browsers display alt text as a tool tip.
  • The title attribute can be used with all elements except for base, basefont, head, html, meta, param, script, and title, but it isn’t required for any. Maybe that’s why it’s less clear when to use it. Use this to provide additional information that is not essential. Most visual browsers display title text as a tool tip when the element is hovered over, however it is up to the browser manufacturer to decide how the title text is rendered. Some will display the text in the status bar instead. Early versions of Safari did this, for instance.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • longdesc attribute
  • D links

Alternate text is not meant to be used as a tool tip, or more specifically, to provide additional information about an image. The title attribute, on the other hand, is meant to provide additional information about an element. That information is displayed as a tooltip by most graphical browsers, though manufacturers are free to render title text in other ways. Amara Support Center : How can I decline a task - 0 views

  • How can I decline a task
    • Claude Almansi

This is still the page that was already obsolete when I submitted the ticket http://support.universalsubtitles.org/support/tickets/2176 for it on June 25, 2012 closed unanswered by Darren Bridenbeck on July 29, 2012. Here is the ticket's content: TED videos are a very particular case, because TED wants workflowed tasks, has provided for them in the settings, and has an external-to-Amara communication support. The problem I have is with tasks arbitrarily imposed by the Amara software in groups that don't want them and whose settings don't foresee them. What happens if I delete such a task? Does it get reassigned to an admin working for Amara, or at random to any other participant of the group, possibly already struggling with Amara-arbitrarily-imposed tasks her/himself? Then your screenshot also shows the Reassign option: that option does not appear to the assignee if s/he is a member. I don't know about managers, not having yet been hit by an Amara imposed task in a team where I am one. Moreover: in http://www.universalsubtitles.org/en/teams/newshour/tasks/ , there is a task assigned to me to "Transcribe English Subtitles" of http://www.universalsubtitles.org/videos/4cQljmM3piqA/info/watch-marco-rubios-full-speech-on-immi…, without a link to the latest draft, because Amara also fully deleted that draft, which amounted to the transcript of the first 9 min+ of the video (the 2 revisions I made are still mentioned in the activity stream in my dashboard page, over 9 hours after that arbitrary deletion). For that task, the drop-down menu only offers me two options: Start Now or Upload Draft. No way to decline it. So if you insist on having screenshots about tasks, you should have one for each of the fanciful ways Amara presents tasks to people, and use a video added to a normal team where tasks are arbitrarily imposed by Amara, not a video added to TED where tasks are a choice.

"MAREMMA AMARA - Caterina Bueno" with translated Portuguese, Brazilian subtitles | Amara - 0 views

  •
"Draft only Subtitles translated from Italian. Showing Revision 3, created 06/08/2012 by Raissa Mendes ." Amara software added this banner, disabled the Edit Subtitles link, but there is no task for the video, hence no normal way for Raissa Mendes to edit her subs, should she wish to - and above all, should there be one: now none for these subs or for other subs of this video can be seen (June 11, 2012) June 12, 2012: issues persist

How Directly's Routing Engine Works [Video] - 0 views

"Directly's customers are seeing some insane results right out of the gates - response times dropping from days to minutes, satisfaction rates tripling. This isn't good luck. Every growing company has a wealth of expert users and customers - people who know and love your product. The trick is matching users who need help with experts on demand, in a way that's fast, scalable, accountable and that fundamentally works."

OneWEB.tv » Five Questions With Dennis Lembrée - Creator of Accessible Twitter - 0 views

  •
Twitter has changed from being a tool most people thought is simply yet another way for people on the Internet to waste time to a platform for social change, social networking and dare I say it even business. One of the aspects that Twitter has been lacking is an accessible interface to the service. Thankfully Dennis Lembrée is changing all this. Schalk Neethling sat down with Dennis to learn more about Accessible Twitter, the problems he faces in creating it and what the future will hold.

Will E-Book Anti-Piracy Technology Hurt Readers? (also on Kindle). Laura Sydell, NPR Ma... - 0 views

Amazon's Kindle, the first eBook reader that has really started to catch on with the public, deals almost exclusively with eBooks that have DRM. According to Ian Fried, the vice president of Amazon Kindle, customers don't seem to mind: "We've had very few if any customer responses that the choice we made with DRM was a problem." But DRM could become a problem if the Kindle goes bust - then all those people who bought Kindle eBooks with DRM will have no way to read them because no other device can open the files. Beyond that, not everyone agrees that DRM is a good business strategy. Publishing consultant Michael Shatzkin says it's tough to make the case that file-sharing reduces sales. He cites science fiction writer Cory Doctorow who, he says, "does the best he can to give away as much of his content as possible." And by giving it away, Shatzkin says, Doctorow's sales have skyrocketed.

Calatrava Bridge in Venice inaccessible in wheelchair: petition - Aug 29, 08 - 0 views

  •
The bridge was meant to be very solemnly inaugurated on Sept. 18, 2008, with the President of the Italian Republic attending. However, this ceremony was cancelled due to the protests of associations of people with disabilities, in particular of the Un ponte per tutti petition, because the bridge violates national accessibility norms, as it includes glass-covered stairs that exclude people in wheelchairs.
