    Evan Tobias is an assistant professor at ASU Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts School of Music. His blog focuses on contemporary issues, technology and showcasing different perspectives. This is an excellent resource to stay current and informed with new information about music. Tobias is very philosophical, less practical for classroom application, but important for professional development purposes.

  • It is also important for students to practice with a model and without a model. I give them a model about 50 percent of the time. In the very beginning, when it’s only three or four notes, the rhythm is not usually a problem
  • Thumbs up means “I got it, let’s go.” Thumbs sideways means “Almost, I need another pass.” Thumbs down means “I’m lost!”

      This method works as feedback. I use them currently in my school.
  • Audiation is the musical voice inside your head, something like your musical imagination
  • Professional brass players use rebreather bags, incentive spirometers, and other tools to create an air model and to increase lung capacity
  • Children are used to taking conversational breaths; we need to teach them to breathe like musicians
  • For the inspiration I recommend using a breathing tube – basically a ½ to ¾-inch piece of PVC coupling
  • I use “sizzling” and “long tones.” Sizzling is great because you have the students create a natural resistance that simulates what it is like playing the horn
  • Long tones are very important to the development of a good sound

This is a great website for general music teachers, as well as any secondary teacher wishing to incorporate movement and improvisation into their classroom. I highly recommend all general music teachers get involved in their local Orff chapter.

Episodes vary from eight minutes (on small topics) to hour-long discussions depending on the topic. They do a great job offering practical relevant advice and is an easy way to get professional development in the car on your way to and from school.

  • I think it is commonly understood that it's important to do your research on the district/school/job for which you're applying before you go into the interview at all. The question time at the end is where your preparation, or lack thereof, can become most apparent! You don't want to ask a question that can easily be answered through an internet search.

  • This is a great opportunity to showcase your knowledge about different teaching methodologies (like Orff, Kodaly, MLT etc) even if the interviewers don't know what you're asking!

    This is a website geared for string musicians or educators. This website provides string teachers with many professional development opportunities! Educators are able to share information about their various programs, and offer suggestions to one another. There are so many teaching resources on this website and one of the best parts is as a member, you are able to watch the recorded sessions from the National Conferences which are sometimes hard to attend. These sessions are extremely important for string teachers to see what teachers from around the country are doing in their own program. It offers great opportunities for networking as well as for anyone who is seeking work in another location.
