    Facebook and MySpace start 'hyper-targeting' The world of advertising is set to change as social networking sites open up their pages to advertisers. The sites Facebook and MySpace are now seemingly locked in a battle to win over advertisers by offering them exclusive access to visitors' pages on their websites. Both sites will allow companies to place targeted adverts based on the information their users have provided in their profile. There is a huge amount of data for advertisers to aim at, including geographical details, hobbies, employment, likes and dislikes and a whole world more. This opens up enormous potential for advertisers for what is now being called 'hyper-targeting'. The sites have calmed fears that private information might be used. MySpace has assured its users that only data they choose to be made public will be available to advertisers. The social networking sites have hundreds of millions of users, half of whom logon to their personal pages on a daily basis. The sites allow people to connect with others across the globe and are now an important part of people's lives. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg described how his new ads would work: "It's no longer just about messages that are broadcast by companies, but increasingly about information that is shared between friends," he said. Zuckerberg described how advertisers will also use Facebook to advertise: "The core of every user's experience on Facebook is their page and that's where businesses are going to start as well," he explained. He added: "The first thing businesses can do is design a page to craft the exact experience they want people to see." Companies such as Coca Cola, Microsoft and Sony have already signed up.

  • we are going to pass around this sack (hold up sack filled with word-recognition words). When the sack gets to you, pull out one card, sound out the word on your card silently, and then read the word aloud quickly while holding up your card so that everyone can see it. Model this using a word in the sack. Once you have read your word, the rest of us will indicate if you’ve read the word correctly. If we think you read the word correctly, we will touch our noses. If we think you made a mistake, we will keep our hands in our laps. If you read the word correctly, you must name another word that rhymes with your word in order to keep the card you drew. For example, if you read the word rat correctly, you must state a word that rhymes with rat, such as cat, in order to keep the card. If you can’t think of a word that rhymes with rat, I will call on someone else to come up with a rhyming word. If that person is correct, she gets to keep the card. If the second student can’t come up with a rhyming word (real or nonsense), call on other students until someone is able to come up with a rhyming word. Now, if you did not read the word you pulled out of the sack correctly, hand the card to the person to your left, so that he gets a chance to read the word and name a rhyming word. The winner of the game is the person with the most word cards once the sack is empty.

    Read and Rhyme challenges students to pronounce target words as well as coming up with words that rhyme. This exercise is a great way to build an ever increasing vocabulary through sound association. You'll need a deck of cards that contains word recognition word learned so far, and a small sack. The goal of the activity is given a written regular word, the student can say the word with automaticity, as well as deepening students' knowledge of words that rhyme.

Rather than continuing to simply provide them information in hopes they will permanently retain it, they need an opportunity to use their newly acquired English-speaking skills in the real world. This can be accomplished through an incorporation of social learning into any ESL curriculum.

Building confidence in their English speaking skills will build their eagerness to learn more.   • For decades, Bloom's Taxonomy has helped teachers plan lessons and design instruction. When Benjamin Bloom and a team of educators first conceived the classification in the late 1940's, they probably never imagined the impact their work would have over 50 years later. While other theories and systems have come and gone, Bloom's taxonomy appears to have become the most commonly used standard in many educational settings. In the 1990's, Lorin Anderson and a group of psychologists updated the taxonomy in the hope that it would have more relevance for 21st century students and teachers, transforming the nouns to verbs and making some other seemingly small but significant changes. An interesting account of the history of Bloom's Taxonomy can be found here. The Blooming Butterfly poster was designed by the Learning Today product development team as a tribute to Bloom and Anderson and to the educators all over the world that continue to implement their vision. We hope that it will serve as a visual reminder for teachers as they continue to guide students to become better thinkers, just as Bloom imagined many years ago!
