"At any rate, the 10.4 million figure seems to be at least marginally good news for Foursquare, which, according to one investor capital source, is having to work harder for funding these days than in years past. ComScore earlier this year reported Foursquare drew just between 5 million and 6 million users monthly from March to June.  The Nielsen number is likely informative for brands still in the consideration stage about cultivating their Foursquare presence through organic features on the app or via the platform's nascent ads offering. Whether or not it's a good number for three-and-a-half-year-old Foursquare is probably a matter of opinion. And it's worth noting that Nielsen ranks the geo-social company only behind Facebook (78 million) and Twitter (23 million) in terms of July mobile app users. Overall, Foursquare usage, per Nielsen, was up 118 percent during the month year-over-year."

Foursquare Local Updates let merchants send text, photos and Specials to customers who have either checked into a business several times or liked it on Foursquare. The updates will be shown to customers when they're in the city where that business is located. The new function will begin rolling out this week. According to Foursquare, brands including H&M, Luke's Lobster, Togo's Sandwiches, Outback Steakhouse, Northern Spy Food Company and Wolfgang Puck plan to use the updates feature. The tool is free to merchants.

Soooooo CardStar is launching Foursquare integration to support checkin for users of the CardStar iPhone app. When the user scans a club or loyalty card via CardStar at checkout, they'll also have the option to check in on Foursquare.

Prices and menus now available on the website, soon to be on mobile apps. The idea is that soon Foursquare will index the menu data so it can let users search for very specific things in Explore.  Uses menus from SinglePlatform, which includes a lot of smaller restaurants

foursquare has "promoted updates".  Business owners are now able to send local updates i.e. specials for the day, or a picture promoting a new outdoor seating area to their "best customers" when they're nearby.

American Eagle displayed this HUGE ad calling consumers/participants to check in on FourSquare... they also use ShopKick... interesting that they use two location services and promote them so heavily. FourSquare didnt pay for this ad.

Admitting it isn't at the top of the list when it comes to digital agencies, EURO RSCG Brussels set out to change that by becoming the most visible virtual agency. How? It set out to check in on Foursquare at 42 of its rivals until it became mayor. When it did, it posted the mayorship on Facebook along with a message encouraging area creatives to join the agency to help make it better.
