Waze Maps Out Native Ad Platform | Adweek - 2 views

  •
"Like seemingly every startup currently exploring an ad-supported business model, Waze has gone native for its ad platform. Typically startups wade into advertising by working directly with brands then erecting a self-serve platform down the road. Waze sped things up. The company began testing ads in its U.S. app over the summer, working directly with Zipcar, Best Buy and a number of fuel brands and convenience store chains; at launch it has added Procter & Gamble, Dunkin' Donuts, Wyndham Hotels, Whole Foods, Jamba Juice, CircleK and Kum & Go to its advertiser roster. The direct sales channel continues, but Waze has also set up a self-serve platform for its most basic ad units. The self-serve platform operates on an auction model with floor prices set at $1 per thousand impressions. In addition to a branded search result, marketers can pay to plot branded pins at their locations on the Waze map. When users click on these branded pins, they can click a link to the company's website, a number to call the location or-borrowing the idea of drive-to advertising popularized by driving navigation company Telenav-a button that would navigate them to the location."

Qualcomm Flo TV Needs Wider Adoption, More Services - Bloomberg - 0 views

  • “If it’s only mobile TV, we’re dissatisfied, we’re not happy with it,” Bill Stone, the Flo unit’s head, said in an interview. “There are going to be a lot of revenue streams off this service.”
  • Stone says the strain on mobile-phone networks caused by ballooning demand for video and data should make Flo attractive to service providers and phone makers. Flo works on a system using airwaves that Qualcomm bought in federal auctions. Flo- enabled devices have separate radios and chips that enable them to receive the service from Qualcomm’s transmitters. “One person streaming a video takes up as much bandwidth as 100 cell phone calls,” said Stone. “Networks break down and can’t handle it. For me, whether I have one or 1 million users, it doesn’t matter.”
  • Distributing magazines with high-resolution pictures is another area where Flo can send content to mobile devices more effectively than wireless-service providers, Stone said. His network would broadcast the data to everyone at once, with only handsets that have subscriptions enabled to access the files.

MobileBeat: AFK keeps gamers connected to their worlds from anywhere | VentureBeat - 0 views

  •
AFK's app makes it possible for gamers to send in-game messages to friends from their mobile phones. Basically, though online games typically have to be accessed from a laptop/desktop, the AFK app makes the chat functions of games compeltely mobile. The company is predicting with the rise of app's like World of Warcraft's Auction House for iPhone, MMOs will look for new ways to detach functions from the gaming environment so users can have access from anywhere. Interesting marketing opportunity: where in-game advertising may have been awkward, advertising on top of game services (such as chat) may be more palatable.
