Every time you need to use health care in today's world, a gauntlet of obstacles stands between you and the service. Not much different than visiting Dr. Hippocrates, way back when...

Over the past few years, I've radically redesigned my approach to learning. In the past, I memorized information. Now, I need to be a knowledge navigator, not a repository of facts. I've delegated the management of facts to the "Hive Mind" of the internet.

New knowledge is rapidly altering the basic sciences that are fundamental to the practice of medicine. To address this concern, the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute convened a group of scientists, physicians, and science educators to identify the essential scientific background physicians in the 21st century will need. The resulting report, Scientific Foundations for Future Physicians, lays out a series of scientific competencies that students must master prior to attending medical school and medical students must understand upon completion of their M.D..

I heard Trojanowski (the senior author) talk about this last month at the annual meeting of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry. It's a very interesting topic with a lot of social ramifications. The statement in the absrract that among people with mild cognitive impairment, the biomarker profile had a 100% sensitivity for development of AD needs to be carefully considered. First, the metric that is of greater interest is the positive predictive value. Second, it is known that some patients who have the classic AD findings at autopsy did not have mental impairment in life. We know this from the Nun study.

I'm sharing the UKCDR project - full disclosure - I am Project Manager of this collaborative project. It aims to make it easier for groups and schools in medical education to have conversations about assessment software requirements with commercial and other developers. Additionally, the project is engaging with commercial developers and trying to win the battle to ensure that best practice pedagogic needs come top in their software development plans.
