Features of assessment learners use to make informe... [Med Educ. 2011] - PubMed - NCBI - 0 views

  •
"Eighty-five learners (53 undergraduate, 32 postgraduate) participated in 10 focus groups. Two main findings emerged. Firstly, the perceived effectiveness of formal and informal assessment activities in informing self-assessment appeared to be both person- and context-specific. No curricular activities were considered to be generally effective or ineffective. However, the availability of high-quality performance data and standards was thought to increase the effectiveness of an activity in informing self-assessment. Secondly, the fostering and informing of self-assessment was believed to require credible and engaged supervisors."

Calculate your item banking needs using UKCDR tool (V1) - 0 views

  •
The requirements developed from across 8 different institutions in the original 2005-07 project are given here with tick boxes for departments, schools and institutions to select which aspects of item banking and associated functionality they feel are key to their own current or future processes. The tool will then give match information using the results of appraisal of 12 pieces of software, including some well known software companies e.g. Speedwell and QuestionMark, and some lesser known projects and companies such as TOIA and BTL. The original project was based heavily in medical undergraduate assessment. Note, a 2009 project is due to create and release information relevant to a V2 specification. The V2 will be more generic, building on the information brought forward for V1. UKCDR is a sister project to UMAP, a national collaborative project in the UK for core, applied assessment in undergraduate medicine.

AARP |:| Fixing US Healthcare - 0 views

  • The AARP just met with the leadership of the Mayo Clinic, one of the most outstanding medical institutions in the country. They provide excellent care at a cost that is less than most other parts of the healthcare system - and with improved outcomes. We asked them about their secret to success. Mayo has an electronic medical record and all their patients have their information online. The physicians are on salary, so there’s no incentive to order unnecessary tests or procedures, and Mayo has an ethic of patient-centered care, with a long history of attracting the best people and rewarding them. If Mayo can do it, why can’t everyone else? The AARP believes that the potential is there for most communities to have excellent care – we must emulate the care delivery of institutions like the Mayo Clinic, and put in place payment and information systems that will coordinate care management better. It’s a big job and will take some investment, but we have many opportunities to do a better job than we’re doing today.

Microbiology Flashcards app for USMLE uses gamification for board prep - 0 views

  •
"The app provides mini flashcards for over 130 bugs including high yield keywords and disease associations. Quizzes include vignettes that have more information about each organism, but this app still does not include all the relevant board exam related microbiology information. This app cannot be used as the only microbiology resource when studying for boards, but the app may be useful to quickly study on the go."

Junior physician's use of Web 2.0 for information ...[Int J Med Inform. 2009] - PubMed ... - 0 views

  •
Web 2.0 use represents a profound departure from previous learning and decision processes which were normally controlled by senior medical staff or medical schools. There is widespread concern with the risk of poor quality information with Web 2.0 use, and the manner in which physicians are using it suggest effective use derives from the mitigating actions by the individual physician. Three alternative policy options are identified to manage this risk and improve efficiency in Web 2.0's use.
