Why Excom Meetings Are the Wrong Place to Make Decisions - HBR - 0 views

  •
Good article on why decisions may or even should not be made in meetings. "Further advantages of turning agenda items into questions include: Clarifying expected outcomes and thus avoiding discussions that run on because there is no defined end; Keeping participants alert during presentations because they're expected to respond; Helping presenters focus on what is essential and leave out unnecessary detail that waste everyone's time; Ensuring a given topic is necessary. Why Your Department Needs Social Media - Advice - The Chronicle of Higher Education - 0 views

  • Social media is crucial not only because it provides a fast way to share information, but also because it makes faculty workloads more transparent.
  • What’s also crucial about Facebook and Twitter is that they make clear the fact that faculty workloads stretch beyond teaching. Announcements of the talks we give, the articles we write, the exhibits we organize, the fellowships we win, and our media appearances emphasize that some of us work on contracts in which about half of our time is supposed to be devoted to research.

It comes from our love of Netflix binge watching a season's worth of shows over a weekend. Uses Udacity MOOC on computer science class. Example cited explains that MOOCer "registered for the course to "indulge an interest," similar to the reason why viewers binge watch TV shows, and why members may sign up for your association's online education." Cites Eli Dourado's statement: "Online education, if we do it right, could be like having an exceptionally well-rounded personal tutor who is willing to indulge any interest at any level of desired intensity."

Proactive Job Search Strategies Job boards are simply not as effective anymore since there are social media outlets like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter where you can pretty much network your way to the right contacts. The fact is, job boards have a 2-4% effectiveness rate whereas networking has over a 50% effectiveness rate." More than 85% of employers use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to review and rank resumes according to skills, experience, keywords. Companies use internal algorithms, so out of an average of 400 resumes using these measures results in only 10 - 20 even looked at. Most hiring managers and recruiters use Linkedin first. Job board resumes are still viewed, but chances are the info is outdated so relying on Linkedin makes sense for recruiters. Niche job boards are worth going to, but to be more productive tie into direct networking through the right contacts.

Meg Jay: Why 30 is not the new 20 | Video on TED.com - 0 views

  •
Excellent video on why 20s are critical adult forming period--brain is fully formed for adulthood; "Plan and not quite enough time to do great things"--Leonard Bernstein Musical chair relationships and fear of not being able to sit down at age 30 with partner for life can cause bad decision making Post millennial crisis is not having the career that you want, or family that you want Story of Emma--at age 25--"having an identity crisis". Thought she might want to work in art or entertainment. Lived with boyfriend who displayed temper more than ambition. Head in lap, and sobbed for hour. In case of emergency, please call. who will be there for me? Told her three things that all 20 somethings need to hear: 1. Get identity capital--investment in who you might want to be next. Identity capital begets identity capital. Discounting exploration is not supposed to count when it is procrastination. 2. New piece of capital or person to date comes from weak ties--half of 20 somethings are underemployed, and half of them are not--reaching out to weak ties is how you connect; 3. You can't pick your family but you can pick your friends. You can pick your family and the time is now. The best time to work on your marriage is before you are married. Consciously choosing what you want. Found an old roommate's cousin who helped her get a job; married and has plenty of emergency contacts. One good conversation, one good Ted Talk can have an enormous impact. "Thirty is not the new 20, claim your adulthood, get your identity capital, reach out to weak ties to make your family.

Why Is Your Association Still Sharing PDFs Online?: Associations Now - 0 views

  • problem with using PDFs in media centers in a 2009 blog post. Long story short: It makes journalists less willing to cover you.
  • PDF is great for distributing documents that need to be printed. But that is all it’s good for,” Nielsen wrote in June of that year. “No matter how tempting it might be, you should never use PDF for content that you expect users to read online.”
  • But those exceptions stand in stark relief to the media pages where press releases are published in PDF format, despite the fact that it would be infinitely more useful and SEO-friendly if that content were placed inside a CMS and published as a web page.

OfficeMax executive apologizes over 'daughter killed' mailer - LA Times - 0 views

  • In a world where bits of personal data are mined from customers and silently sold off and shuffled among corporations, Seay, 46, appears to be the victim of marketing gone horribly wrong.
  • World Privacy Forum, a nonprofit public interest research group based in San Diego, noting that this is just one example of the information such companies probably hold.
  • "This is the tip of the iceberg. This happens all the time," said Pam Dixon, executive director of World Privacy Forum, a nonprofit public interest research group based in San Diego, noting that this is just one example of the information such companies probably hold.

  • "Why do they have that?" Seay said of the information about his daughter's death. "What do they need that for? How she died, when she died? It's not really personal, but looking at them, it is. That's not something they would ever need."
  • Dixon's group has found companies selling data on rape victims, seniors suffering from dementia and people diagnosed with HIV and AIDS. She said companies created powerful data sets by combining personal information available from public records, census information and social media."All of us are on these lists, and right now we don't even have the right to find out what list we're on or what they say about us," Dixon said. "And I think it's becoming increasingly important for us to see this information and have some rights so we can get off these lists. For this father and mother, I can't think of a worse thing."
