When decisions with important consequences involved, people ask for expert opinion let it be a hotel booking (trip advisor, booking...) or purchasing a book (amazon recommends, kitapyurdu...). If the stakes are high, then it becomes obligatory to go and ask for expert opinion. However this becomes a problem if people rely on experts as if they are getting parental advice. People become addicted to experts because of its certainity, assuredness and definitiveness. In a study, a group of adults' brains' MRI scans when they are listening to experts showed that the independent part of their decision making part of their brains switches off while they are listening. This listening becomes unquestionnable and they use these opinions without distinguishing as right or wrong. Considering the doctors who misdiagnose 4 out of 10, not questionning is an important issue. As a result the role of the expert should change because they are affected by social norms, cultural norms and everything. So their judgements may differ. Think about companies who try to sell their products and include experts in the process. Toothpaste, washing detergents etc. are exagerated. Although they are experts, they have assumptions which may have flaws. People should question and become skeptical about experts. People should not blindly accept or listen, rather they should open their eyes wide open, face the world, use experts for certain things but be aware of their limitations and also their own.

A couple of yeras ago, Turkish Ministry of Education declared that some teachers wold be appointed as "experts". At the very beginning, some teachers got the title of "experts"; however, the ministry gave up the idea after a very short time. This can be a topic to be discussed at our class this week. Some of the questions that can be raised: * What is an expert teacher? * Do we need experts at our school? * How should the teachers get the title of "expert", by an exam or by working time? I added a Turkish forum where people discussed the expert teachers at schools.

It can be a good discussion topic, well suited for the week.

Patricia Benner published a book whose name is Novice to Expert in 1982 and at that book she mentioned 5 levels from novice to experts. These levels are; novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient and the expert. This excerpt is taken from the book "The Gamification of Learning and Instruction: Game-based Methods and Strategies for Training and Education" Game-based learning have been increasingly used in educational settings in the last 10 years and there is a lot of research on this subject. I wonder if there is any on game-based learning how experts and novices solve certain problems in the game environments. Sounds a promising research area.

The example of Making sale in differentiating novices and experts is stunning.While novices focus on making the sale , experts develop relationships. The former aims to think, organize information for a limited time for that thing only.However the latter thinks more elaboratelly, develop ways for a long period of time for future connections which is wiser.Thus, we can see that experts know how to use their long term memory effectively compared to novices.

One important thing that we should remember is the non-academic experts. I think there are many important things that we will learn from non-academic experts. Yes Yasin I totally agree with you about the mistake part but this man dedicated his life to perform on the wire between Twin Towers so I thought that someone who dedicates oneself to perform in a particular area develops expertise in that area eventually and we can call him an expert in being a juggler even he put his life in danger. By the way this is an extreme example of being an expert. I just try to make connections between dedication and developing an expertise through this example.

What is the place of 'talent' in the topic of expertise ? Even The making of an expert says that in addition to talent of Mozart he has a father,skilled composer, facilitating him which makes Mozart: Mozart. Then the question comes, innate talent does really need an 10000 hours to become an expert or can ordinary people be an expert with 20 hours!

Here is an interesting research study looking at expert and novice performance with eye tracking technique. 

This is a good writing which explains the paradox and gives specific examples on his issue.

This explains many things :) "The moral of the spotlight effect is that we think everyone is paying attention to everything we do, consumed with our tiny missteps and bad hair days, but they aren't. Why? Because they are busy thinking about you paying attention to their tiny missteps and bad hair days. The bad news is that people are pretty self-absorbed thinking others are paying attention to them. The good news is that people aren't paying that much attention to you, so don't worry so much about what others will think if you do x, y, or z."

"EXPERT" is a very powerful word. It gives many responsibilities to the people who are considered "experts" in their fields. As the writer says, "It is hard to let others know that you don't know everything they think you know." What professional and social pressure on people! I don't know how to get rid of such feelings but I think people should be aware of the fact that being a leader and at the same time an expert necessiates at least 20,000 hours of deliberate practice :-))

Here is another research that comes up with the findings indicating being an expert does not mean to teach effectively because of expertise-base biases. So, expert teachers make difference thanks to their pedagogical knowledge, don't they?

Sermin, I followed similar nominating strategy to identify expert online teachers in my dissertation. Berliner's question is rather important here: How do we identify expert teachers? What should be the selection criteria as well as method?

The author shares his personal comments and gives clues on how to be perceived as an expert in your field. These steps start with awreness about yourself and terminates with displaying, selling yourself to others in the field=)

What do they mean by deliberate practice? What are the essential components of practising deliberately? The person continuing on an activity should respond first why, how and when to perform it to become an expert.
