When we don't understanding someone, listeners tend to respond with phrases like "What?", "Can you say that again?", or "I'm sorry, I didn't understand you." This often prompts the student to repeat the phrase again in the same way without understanding why the attempt failed in the first place. Reply in a way that provides the student with a strategy for how to improve the communication attempt. Use a phrase like "Say that again using different words" or "Say that again slower" to prompt the student to use synonyms, descriptors, or a slower rate. Pair a hand gesture, like twirling fingers when prompting the use of alternate words or lowering a palm to indicate slowing down, to provide a visual cue

Episode #116 features a description of how and why to use core vocabulary (high frequency words) as the basis for an augmentative/alternative communication system. The entire episode was generated using only "Frequently Occurring Home and School Words" from the list generated in the article "Vocabulary-Use Patterns in Preschool Children: Effects of Context and Time Sampling" by Christine A. Marvin, David R. Beukelman, and Denise Bilyeu published in Augmentative and Alternative Communication, Volume 10 in December, 1994. The episode demonstrates that using only high frequency words users can still elicit complex, generative language. StoryToolz is a nice assembly of useful tools for writers. Writers who are struggling to come up with ideas for fiction stories will like the story starters featured on StoryToolz. StoryToolz has three tools that you can use to get story ideas; Random Conflicts, Half Title Generator, and Story Idea Generator. To use any of these three tools just select the tool from the main menu then look at the randomly generated idea. If you don't like the options, run the tool again until you get options that you like. In addition to the writing prompts tools StoryToolz offers a few tools to help you edit your work. The Cliché Buster analyzes your work to find clichés that you have used in your writing. The Readability tool analyzes your text to estimate a reading level on several scales.

"The Communication Supports Inventory- Children & Youth (CSI-CY) is a tool to help professionals working with students with complex communication needs make educational plans that are comprehensive enough to capture their strengths and restrictions. The Inventory consists of a survey and a report.
