Reading Bear, a project of WatchKnowLearn.org, is the first free program online to teach beginning readers vocabulary and concepts while systematically introducing all the main phonetic patterns of written English, all using innovative rich media. We spent an enormous amount of time developing 50 presentations, covering even more phonics principles and illustrating over 1,200 vocabulary items. There is nothing else like it, free or otherwise.
Aided language modeling: adult models how to use the individual's communication board/AAC
system by actually pointing to/selecting symbols to represent words being read from the text
Learning how to use aided language modeling during reading activities using strategies; either of
the strategies could be used although in the research the RAA strategy was used primarily to
model and elicit single symbol responses whereas RAAP strategy was used primarily to model
and elicit multi-symbol response. You can use either of these strategies but prompts may be
needed for some children.
* RAA: using the read-ask-answer strategy to elicit single symbol responses on the AAC
system
* RAAP: using the read-ask-answer-prompt strategy to elicit single symbol or multisymbol
responses on the AAC system
There are 7 reading courses and 5 writing courses within the program; including reading and writing in Spanish! Assign specific courses and specific strands within each course for specific students.

"Reading and writing are modalities of language (just like listening & talking). The more we integrate literacy into language learning the more opportunities for prAACtice and learning. Think of all the ways to prAACtice core words with reading and writing (e.g., "read again", "write about that", "that is good", "He was bad", "tell me more", "I know", etc…). With this in mind, we love encouraging a love of literacy for ALL of our students. Here are some top tips we have learned from the most reluctant reader/writers, to beginning reader/writers, to even the more proficient readers/writers. It is such a great pleasure to watch students begin to love literacy as much as we do."
This program is designed to be a fun way to develop your children's early literacy skills as you read story books with them. In the books For Children, you will find coaches, Pedro, Hali, and Monty who give ideas of how to talk with children about the books. In the books For Teachers and Parents, there is also another coach named Terry, who talks about literacy development and suggests fun activities to do with children.
