Martin Pistorius: How my mind came back to life - and no one knew | TED Talk | TED.com - 0 views

  •
"Imagine being unable to say, "I am hungry," "I am in pain," "thank you," or "I love you," - losing your ability to communicate, being trapped inside your body, surrounded by people yet utterly alone. For 13 long years, that was Martin Pistorius's reality. After contracting a brain infection at the age of twelve, Pistorius lost his ability to control his movements and to speak, and eventually he failed every test for mental awareness. He had become a ghost. But then a strange thing started to happen - his mind began to knit itself back together. In this moving talk, Pistorius tells how he freed himself from a life locked inside his own body."

Do You Use 3×5 Cards? Rethinking the Research Process | Digital Writing, Digi... - 0 views

  •
This past weekend, our department chair received an email from a local high school English teacher who asked, in short, should they be teaching students how to do a "traditional" research paper - including the use of 3×5 note cards - because some of his colleagues are strong supporters of it and others consider it "archaic." He wanted to hear a response from a college professor about how best to prepare students for the kinds of research that they would be doing in composition courses that they would be taking after high school. Below, I have copied and pasted the response that I offered him via email. And, now I ask you… What do you think - is it time to move away from "traditional" research paper writing processes?

ModMath on the App Store - 1 views

  •
"ModMath is an adaptive program to assist students in acquiring math skills from basic arithmetic to complex algebraic equations. The app, created in cooperation with the Christopher's Way Foundation, lets you type math problems right onto the touch screen of an iPad rather than write them out long-hand. You can then solve the problems using the built-in touch pad. And you can print, save to cloud services like Dropbox, or e-mail the assignments all without ever picking up a pencil. The app is free. But we will be charging a nominal fee for extra features to subsidize the cost of future updates. Please know that the purpose of any fee is not for profit. But rather to expand the usefulness of ModMath to a broader range of students. We have a dysgraphic son too. We just want to see all our kids succeed. So even if you don't need the pay features, consider buying them as an investment in another child's future. ModMath specifics: - Provides students with a virtual piece of graph paper, where they can set up and solve math problems in a format that's easily legible. - Allow students to solve basic math problems and more complex algebraic equations, all without ever picking up a pencil. - Print assignments, email them directly to the teacher or save to cloud storage."
