Maintained Relationships on Facebook | overstated - 0 views

  • What it shows is that, as a function of the people a Facebook user actively communicate with, you are passively engaging with between 2 and 2.5 times more people in their network. I’m sure many people have had this feeling, but these data make this effect more transparent.
  • The stark contrast between reciprocal and passive networks shows the effect of technologies such as News Feed. If these people were required to talk on the phone to each other, we might see something like the reciprocal network, where everyone is connected to a small number of individuals. Moving to an environment where everyone is passively engaged with each other, some event, such as a new baby or engagement can propagate very quickly through this highly connected network.
  • All Friends: the largest representation of a person’s network is the set of all people they have verified as friends. Reciprocal Communication: as a measure of a sort of core network, we counted the number of people with whom a person had had reciprocal communications, or an active exchange of information between two parties. One-way Communication: the total set of people with whom a person has communicated. Maintained Relationships: to measure engagement, we took the set of people for whom a user had clicked on a News Feed story or visited their profile more than twice.

  • Peter Marsden found the number of people with whom individuals “can discuss important matters” numbers only 3 for Americans[3]. In a subsequent survey, researchers found that this number has dropped slightly over the past 10 years[4], causing some alarm in the press, but without sufficient explanation[5].
  • Killworth, et al. found using this technique and others that the number of people a person will know in their lifetime ranges somewhere between 300 and 3000[1]. On Facebook, the average number of friends that a person has is currently 120[2]. Given that Facebook has only been around for 5 years, that not everyone uses it, and that the not every acquaintance has found each other, this number seems reasonable for an average user.
  • We were asked a simple question: is Facebook increasing the size of people’s personal networks?

Anonymity on the Internet: Why the Price May be Too High by David Davenport, Communicat... - 0 views

  •
Anonymous communication is seen as the cornerstone of an Internet culture that promotes sharing and free speech and is overtly anti-establishment. Anonymity, so the argument goes, ensures governments cannot spy on citizens and thus guarantees privacy and free speech. The recommendations of the American Association for the Advancement of Science's conference on "Anonymous Communication Policies for the Internet" [1] support this view. Among the findings were that "online anonymous communication is morally neutral" and that "it should be considered a strong human and constitutional right." This view is fundamentally mistaken; by allowing anonymous communication we actually risk an incremental breakdown of the fabric of our society. The price of our freedoms is not, I believe, anonymity, but accountability. Unless individuals and, more importantly, governments can be held accountable, we lose all recourse to the law and hence risk our very freedom. The following sections argue this in more detail and suggest the only real solution is more openness, not less.

The WELL: Bruce Sterling: State of the World, 2009 - 0 views

  • I have to love a guy who talks about a "collapse gap." He's got a blog called "ClubOrlov" at http://cluborlov.blogspot.com/, and in his intro to a guest post on December 23, he says " I called it as I saw it, and, unfortunately, I seem to have called it correctly. The US is collapsing before our eyes. Stage 1 collapse is very advanced now; stages 2 and 3 are picking up momentum."
  • So that leaves the Americans -- the global wealthy are clinging to 'em like a drunk to a lamppost.
  • I notice that John Robb, one of my favorite prophets of doom, has formed some tacit New Urbanist alliance with James Howard Kunstler, also one of my favorite prophets of doom.

  • In my futurist book TOMORROW NOW I was speculating that there might be a post-national global new order arising in cities. Cities as laboratories of the post-Westphalian order.
  • I was on a call recently with a business that produces "resilient cities" planning, database-intensive digital planning.
  • if we allow ourselves to buy into the fragmentation of postmodernity, where positionality, diversity and ennui rule the day, we lose sight that there are big, tangible players who have the power to behave in ways with their political clout, capital, manufacturing and commerce that are either earth-friendly or not earth-friendly.
  • Instead, I hope we will approach a critical mass in the populace where we persistently insist––politically, economically, spiritually––that our business and government leaders adopt behaviors that embrace a new global consciousness
  • The same goes for Americans trying to rebel against Wall Street. There's no visible other space. There's no liberated territory. It's like rebelling against a funhouse mirror because it makes you look so fat and stupid.
  • his is not just a bad vibe happening. Merrill Lynch is gone. Enron is long gone. Madoff is a crook. The big boys are hurting. Cities are broke, states are broke, the feds are a laughingstock. The Congress and the former Administration have fully earned the public's contempt. You can't "blame the media" for that. Even the media's broke -- ESPECIALLY the media.
  • I agree that there's an irrational panic now. There are also a large crowd of severe, real-world, fully rational, deeply structural problems that have gone unconfronted for years.
  • This is a frank recognition of the stakes. It's aimed at the adults in the room.
  • People become happy when they have something coherent to be enthusiastic about.
  • When you can't imagine how things are going to change, that doesn't mean that nothing will change. It means that things will change in ways that are unimaginable.

Excessive texting may signal mental illness - web - Technology - smh.com.au - 0 views

  • Those with the condition suffered withdrawal symptoms of anger and tension when a computer was inaccessible, and often lost their sense of time through excessive use, Dr Block said.
  • Other symptoms included feeling "the need for better computer equipment, more software, or more hours of use", and having arguments, lying, social isolation and fatigue, he said. Excessive gaming, sexual preoccupations and excessive text messages and emails were all evidence of having the disorder, he said.
  •
People who send large numbers of text messages and emails may have a mental disorder, a doctor writing in a leading psychiatric journal said. Jerald Block, writing in the latest issue of the American Journal Of Psychiatry, said "internet addiction" was a "common disorder" that deserved inclusion in a manual of mental disorders used by health professionals.

The Public Vanishes - 0 views

  • The public world has since become less urgent, more remote, and more tainted.
  • face-to-face civic activity has dropped as groups with local chapters have given way to groups that count as members everyone who sends in a check in response to a direct-mail appeal.
  • The important question is the share of income that Americans devote to charity; and by that measure, charitable giving has dropped sharply
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • He acknowledges that there has been growth in support groups, but he insists that these are concerned with their own members' psychological well-being rather than with any civic interests
  • The rise in volunteering among young people is just about the only data in Bowling Alone that provides a basis for hope about the future.
  • One reason for the decline in face-to-face sociability may be that Americans can now sustain relationships with people whom they do not regularly see face-to-face.
  •
This difference in causal lineage between civic activity and other social activity seems critical to me, though Putnam seems to forget it when he summarizes his causal analysis a chapter later. There he bundles civic engagement together with sociability, and concludes that half of the decline in "social capital" is due to generational turnover, another quarter of it is due to television, and the remainder is the consequence of time pressures and money pressures and suburbanization.

"Birthers" Fouling OpenGovt Interactive Site | Personal Democracy Forum - 0 views

  • The parties creating controversy and "conspiracy" are Barry and his handlers. Man doesn't hide all his personal records for no reason. Doesn't drop $1 million plus on attorneys to ensure his dirty little secret stays a secret. The little fraud should be exposed. What he's done is unconscionable. He makes James Frey look like Honest Abe. Btw, you sound like a 14 year old girl in the throes of post American Idol heartbreaker hissy fit.
  • "Birthers" by jorji on June 2, 2009 - 12:24pm Micah, Creating a catchy little title ("birthers") for those who have informed themselves enough to understand the difference between a short form birth certificate (certificate of live birth--at the time used also for registering a birth in Hawaii, regardless of whether that birth actually took place in Hawaii) and a long form birth certificate (includes information not available on the short form, such as attending doctor, and hospital where the birth took place), does not make such informed citizens either nuts or conspiracy theorists. Asking for proof of the constitutionally demanded eligability is only good citizenship. Deriding those who care about the constitution does not however, make you a good citizen, Micah. Jorj
  • Birther NUTS trashing town hall by Stingray on June 2, 2009 - 10:21am To Micah Sifry; The site was created for response from the citizens of our country. You are obviously not aware of the importance of the 'Natural Born' issue at question, rather than just being a 'citizen'. To call those American Citizens 'NUTS' because they have a legitimate question regarding that issue in light of everything going on at such a rapid-fire pace is nothing short of blatant prejudice and hatred for those that disagree with you! You, Micah Sifry, are exactly what you are calling others! If you can't stand to be disagreed with, then you just plain don't belong here!

South American writing systems - 1 views

  •
he earliest form of a writing system found in the Incan Empire of South America prior to colonialism was the Quipu. Although writing system may not be fitting, it served as some sort of a "transmittal system." The quipu is colored strings made of wool and cotton which are joined in many different ways and knotted in order to communicate. Several South American societies were capable of reading it. Upon the arrival of the Spanish in 1531, the conquistadors were suspicious of the quipu and burned most of them. To this day, only 300 quipu's remain. As to what the Incans were communicating with each other about, archaeologists remain uncertain. They do know however that they were used for administrative purposes such as tracking tributes. They might also have been used as maps or legends to be told orally in the future. Little is still known about this fascinating system of communication.
