How to Implement R&D-Driven Open Innovation - 1 views

  •
By Frank Mattes, on Innovation Management. June 22, 2011.This article, and others offered on the site, feature for profit organizations. "R&D-driven open innovation is a powerful lever for enhancing the firm's innovativeness since it multiplies the firm's R&D resources. Two examples may highlight the point: Procter&Gamble has 9,000 people employed in its various R&D units - and estimates the global number of experts in its technology fields to be two million. And Merck Inc. estimates that although it is a global leader in its field it produces only one percent of the relevant global patents every year. Both of these firms see open innovation as an effective way for engaging the innovative potential of the thousands of brilliant minds outside the firm."

Innovation Administration - 0 views

  • "Find the most effective programs out there and then provide the capital needed to replicate their successes in communities around the country. By focusing on high-impact, results-oriented nonprofits, we will ensure that government dollars are spent in a way that is effective, accountable, and worthy of the public trust."
  • Through the Department of Education's innovation funds, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan is promoting a very specific image of school reform, one that borrows liberally from the venture philanthropists' goal of bringing free-market values to the public sector. The federal guidelines encourage states and schools to embrace specific "innovations," such as enacting merit pay for teachers and lifting laws that cap the number of charter schools. Though such policies may have tertiary benefits, there is no research consensus on whether either one contributes to the "bottom line" of education reform -- increased academic achievement for high-poverty kids.

By Dana Goldstein, published in The American Prospect, November 19, 2009. The article is critical of the idea of "innovation" in public policy, and cites specific criticisms of recent Obama initiatives in innovation, including in education. See highlights.

  • Something I am trying to get a handle on in my dissertation has to do with communication (and communication formats) that are imposed on a group/team and those in which groups or teams are able to develop their own forms and forms of communication. What I found is that a team might have “hidden” communication, withholding from some, developing different spaces and different levels of access to various members, depending on the task. An earlier blog by Harold Jarche referring to Lillie Efimova's work. Note how structure/goal oriented moves over to informal/opportunity-driven network with personal drivers taking over. Perhaps most MCNC groups reside in the opportunity-driven, informal networking place--not so much coordination but cooperation keeps them together, weakly? Has an impact also on facilitator's role.

nuPOLIS Site to Terminate - 0 views

The headline is an April Fools joke. nuPOLIS is "the Internet presence of the Innovation Network for Communities (INC)" and a favorite site of Susan and Diana. However, their 15-month start-up grant is coming to an end, and this organization that concentrates on social innovation must decide how -- and if -- they will move forward. Stay tuned to see what happens.
