    Purpose - This study proposes a mobile learning model that employs digital libraries to support investigative learning activities. A student-centered mobile learning activity with self-guided exploration for physical ecology observation has been conducted to demonstrate the benefits of using digital libraries to support investigation-based ecology learning activities. Design/methodology/approach - An investigation-based mobile learning model is proposed and an experiment is designed to show the effectiveness of the learning model, in which the students are asked to answer a series of questions by observing the real-world learning objects and searching for supplemental materials from a digital library. Findings - The instructional experiment conducted in an elementary school with 64 sixth grade students shows that the innovative approach is able to improve the learning achievement, learning effectiveness, as well as the learning attitudes of the students. Practical implications - The findings of this paper imply that the use of the investigative learning model will significantly promote the utilization rate of digital libraries. Originality/value - An investigative model for using digital libraries to support mobile learning is proposed in this paper. It provides good guidance to teachers for designing learning activities with digital libraries, and a good way for students to learn, utilizing the materials in digital libraries. CORAL: Implementing an Open-Source ERM System. . - 0 views

    The presenters focused on the benefits and challenges of implementing an open-source electronic resource management (ERM) system called Centralized Online Resource Acquisitions and Licensing (CORAL) at their libraries. Originally developed by the University of Notre Dame's Hesburgh Libraries, CORAL offers libraries the option to reorganize ERM workflows and collect information about their electronic resources into one central place without having to commit funding for new software from the ever-shrinking library budget. CORAL currently includes four modules: Organizations, Resources, Licensing, and Usage Statistics. In addition to the challenges that are faced in any ERM system implementation, such as collecting and preparing data and training staff, issues specific to using an open-source application in an academic library were presented.w:

    This article examines technology trends in higher education and how they impact student habits and preferences in college libraries. A study was conducted among students at the Sam Houston State University in East Texas to investigate their usage of electronic devices and technologies such as text messaging, Twitter, podcasts, Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds, and social networks. Results indicate that students do wish that basic library services were available through the most popular social networking sites and Internet technologies. Topics include a review of literature consulted, methods used, and the demographics of the student body researched.     "This study which is based on the Technological Acceptance Model (TAM), seeks to explore whether librarians and LIS students are familiar with the newest technological innovations and whether they are ready to accept them. The research was conducted in Israel during the first and second semesters of the 2012 academic year and considered two populations: librarians and LIS students. Researchers used two questionnaires to gather data: a personal details questionnaire, and a mobile technology questionnaire. On the whole, the current study supported the two core variables of the TAM (perceived ease of use and usefulness), as well as personal innovativeness that may predict librarians' and students' behavioral intention to use mobile services in the library."     Academic libraries are creating copyright positions to respond to the evolving and litigious copyright environment associated with digital content and services. This paper reports on a study of advertisement trends for copyright positions available in academic libraries. A content analysis of job advertisement data was carried out on data generated from JobLIST , an electronic listserv of the American Library Association (ALA) where library positions from the United States and Canada are posted. Job data were generated by searching the JobLIST database using the following search terms: copyright , intellectual property , scholarly communication , repository , electronic resources , licensing , and digital.

A Moral and Legal Obligation: Preservation in the Digital Age - 0 views

    Marcum (1997) uses a quote from Jarislav Pelikan to establish the need for archival commitment to preserve information (knowledge) in establishments such as libraries, museums, archives (federal, state and local municipalities) and the like as illustrating "embalming of the dead". To this end, a task force was formed by combining the Commission on Preservation and Access and the Research Libraries Group formed a Task Force on the Archiving of Digital Information. This task force identified a short list of five challenges associated with the preservation of digital artifacts. Specifically, organizational in nature: − "The first line of defense against loss of valuable digital information rests with the creators, providers, and owners of digital information. − Long-term preservation of digital information on a scale adequate for the demands of future research and scholarship will require a deep infrastructure capable of supporting a distributed system of digital archives. − A sufficient number of trusted organizations must exist that are capable of storing, migrating, and providing access to digital collections. − A process of certification for digital archives is needed to create an overall climate of trust about the prospects of preserving digital information. − Certified digital archives must have the right and duty to exercise an aggressive rescue function as a fail-safe mechanism for preserving valuable digital information that is in jeopardy of destruction, neglect, or abandonment by its current custodian" (pp. 358-359). The task force also established a list of greatest organizational challenges opposing support for the preservation of digital information. This list includes the following items: − "Legal bases for deposit and rescue. In individual countries and internationally, legislation and agreements are needed to encourage legal deposit of electronic resources with archival repositories, to enable rescue of abandoned resource

    This was a very interesting and informative article. Comparing the punishment of taking away the Internet to taking away writing utensils was great. I know I use it as much if not more than writing utensils now. I think they had some great stories they shared and I think the solution of integrating ethical behavior throughout the curriculum is a good idea.

    Eventhough, this article is from 1998 it still presents ethical issues that are relevant. I wish schools start teaching classes on Internet ethics, copyright and online bullying early on. These question are going to be very critical to education and the future of citizenship. I think about how information is shared on Twitter in the current presidential election cycle and how the general public seem to not be bothered with checking facts. We have to work even harder to teach critical thinking and how to sort opinion for verifiable facts.

    Great point about teaching critical thinking and the idea that taking away access to the internet is not an effective way to teach them to recognize the consequences of their actions. Often, I know in my classroom it is much easier to just take away the electronic devices than taking the time to stress the importance of ethical behavior online or offline.
