Interesting take on ICT role in the Australian curriculum stating it should be separately assessed. This is a good point but I still feel it integrates across all learning areas and needs to be up to the teacher how they use ICT. I agree though that a subject teaching the skills and workings of ICT is a good idea and there does seem a huge variation as to how much ICT is used in the classroom. This article may be a bit dated (2011)....

Multiliterate Star Warians: The force of popular culture and ICT in early l...: EBSCOhost - 3 views

  •
The abstract for this sounds interesting Can popular culture and information communication technologies (ICT) broaden early years' multiliteracies experiences? This paper presents a case study that begins with boys role-playing Star Wars action scenes at the commencement of the school year, and concludes with an end-of-year school community celebration of a new DVD Star Wars movie sequel, designed and performed by the boys. The Children's Star Wars Project was developed in a small Western Australian independent community school committed to the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy. The case study provides an exemplar of the integral relationship between early childhood pedagogy, multiliteracies metalanguage, and multimodal designs of meaning. Implications for educational research are that popular culture and ICT can be readily integrated with early childhood education (ECE) to broaden multiliteracies experiences. As shown in this case study, these experiences facilitate the achievement of The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia outcomes.

Professional development to enhance teachers' practices in using information and commun... - 12 views

Hi All, I found this article to be very pertinent to this weeks content in EDC3100. I hope some of you can benefit as well: ABSTRACT (Copied from Sciencedirect) Technology integration in K-12 classrooms is usually overly teacher-centered and has insufficient impact on students' learning, especially in enhancing students' higher-order cognitive skills. The purpose of this project is to facilitate science teachers' use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) as cognitive tools to shift their practices from traditional teacher-centered methods to constructivist, student-centered ones. This paper describes the outcomes and lessons learned from an application of design-based research (DBR) in the implementation and refinement of a teacher professional development (PD) program that is a key component of the overall project. This DBR study involved 25 middle-school science teachers from 24 schools whose implementation of cognitive tools with their students in science classrooms and virtually through a social networking site were observed over four years. A mixed-methodology was utilized to examine the impact of the cognitive tools intervention on teachers' classroom practices and students' development of new literacy skills. Identifying reusable design principles related to technology integration was another focus of the DBR study. The results revealed teachers' positive changes in their classroom practices by gradually allowing students to take control over the use of technology, and positive impact on students' ICT skills and science learning. Design principles for future professional development programs aimed at preparing teachers to adopt a cognitive tools approach are described.

Five apps for integrating ICT into the classroom - 2 views

  •
Interesting article on how apps are being trailed in classrooms in 2013. Five apps are recommended and I have had positive experiences with Edmodo in particular as it is being used by my sons teachers.

Thanks you for posting this! I found it really helpful and interesting. Must just buy some of those apps now!

Thanks Taylor. I saw some of your suggestions too and am adding your Brain pop resource to my tool belt. I have seen this used in classrooms- very effective on smart boards especially for visual and kinaesthetic learners. I saw Brain pop used for a Unit on 'tall buildings'. The explanations, quiz, printout and games were a very engaging part of the lesson.

The role of reflection and mentoring in ICT - 1 views

  •
My favourite line from the journal article: The metacognitive approach to ICT learning, which was developed initially as an approach to pre-service teacher education (Phelps & Ellis, 2002a, 2002b, 2002c), is founded on the premise that adoption and integration of ICT by teachers is influenced by their attitudes, beliefs, motivation, confidence and learning strategies (Higgins & Mosley, 2001; Rudd, 2001).

Teaching Teachers for the Future - 6 views

This is a great website that I found, it is primarily set up for Pre-Service Teachers to help them build their ICTE (Information, Communication and Technology in Education) capabilities. It even has little packages that you can log into the site with your Scootle account and look at practical hints and tips on integrating ICTs into your lessons in English, History, Maths and Science. Easy to use and quite informative. Has a lot of information about TPACK too :) the packages come in three areas, early childhood, upper primary/lower secondary and years 9/10. There is even reflective video clips from Pre-Service Teachers that have used these packages.
