A video doing the rounds in which a US high school student complains bitterly about the teaching approach used. i.e. hand out packets, read. He wants the teacher to teach, to engage the students. A lesson there about what's acceptable teaching strategies. But more broadly, there's a lesson here about the spread of smart phones with video. What happens in your classroom can be recorded and made public.  The classroom may not be as private as you think. A typical knee-jerk response may be to ban the use of device. What are the chances of that actually working? How well has it worked in schools today? What about using these tools as part of student learning?

A cheap sensor that can be connected to a mobile phone and combined with a range of apps to act as a data logger. Almost approaching the idea of a Tricorder from Star Trek. Will measure temperature, humidity, pressure, light, carbon monoxide levels amongst others.

Your giving yourself away now David with the "Star Trek" comment, don't tell me you can speak Klingon ;)))

Wow. That is amazing, Can you imagine implementing something like that into the classroom. That is a whole new level of science and maths teaching!!

"In the 360 degree video, Mike Kent, a Geography teacher, delivers a great lesson and you can look round the entire room as students and teacher move around, get things done, interact with the teacher and go through a Q&A session. It is fascinating. They're using this approach for lesson observations allowing the teacher, or their colleagues, to watch it back in full Virtual Reality. This gives the teacher a view of themselves, from the student's point of view, as well as observe 'everything' that happens in the classroom. It made me think of different possibilities….."

A rather long but in-depth article about the double-edged sword of technology in schools. A very interesting read about teaching effective use of technology, and the importance of balance in our lives.

I chose this item as it is a handy item for a history teacher to utilise. A lot of these contemporary issues come up in the classroom and utilising this to correct errors in textbooks and information delivered that is not quite accurate, can aid in a students education and a teachers development equally. 

I thought I'd post this short movie. It's an example of ICT activities being done in a class I had my last practicum in. It is a simple activity that the teacher did, using ICTs that were readily availble.. The teacher takes a traditional printed text being used in guided reading (PM readers) and helps the students produce a digital text based on the language used in the original text. Students select images from google images and then use a digital camera to take photos or video, and manipulate the images using IWB software, to place themselves in the digital text. The images are uploaeded into Movie Maker where additonal text, ddialogue and sound are added. The finished artefact is then uploaded toYouTube so that it can be placed on the school website for sharing. The students and their families can view the new digital text at home. The movie is also presented at the school assembly. The teacher does ICT activities like this on a regular basis in English. If you google Tyalgum Public School and click on More News you can view other ICT activities the Kindergarten, Year , Year 2 class did. I think this type of ICT activity gives the students a sense of ownership of their learning.

This is a great activity. Just emphasises how important it is that we know how to use all of these ICTs in the classroom because if we don't know them this activity could take a long time or ICTs wouldn't be used in such a great way. Out of interest how long did it take?

Empirical research into the effectiveness of "whiteboard animation" (Google that term to find out what it is). An example of empirical resarch.

I sometimes hear that the classroom of today looks and functions much like the classroom of the 19th century-desks lined up in neat rows, facing the central authority of the teacher and a chalkboard (or, for a contemporary twist, a whiteboard or screen.) Is this model, born of the industrial age, the best way to meet the educational challenges of the future?  What do we see as the college classroom of the future: a studio? a reconfigurable space with flexible seating and no center stage? virtual collaborative spaces, with learners connected via their own devices?

A common response to Postman's "Technology is always a tradeoff" is to raise the idea of txt speech ("cu in 10 mins @ a m8 house LOL" - thanks Tollie) as a loss. Folk being lazy? This suggests we've been lazy for a bit longer than some may imagine. If I had time, I would like to look more into the authenticity of this resource.

What happened to the old television learning curve when the most complex factors had to do with rabbit ear positioning? Technology has inundated us with great tools and given us access to heaps of information. But it's also burying us under an avalanche of options. For certain products, I can take the easy way out. My friend Isaac is one of those rare people who loves doing the research. If I need a new camera, I just call him. But even then, it's a challenge to get a simple answer without being confronted with a list of possible features.
