Tragedy of the Commons- Climate - 1 views

  •
It is interesting to note that economists put the blame of climate problems on economic market failure. One of the externalities responsible they say is the ' greenhouse gas negative externality'. it is considered a negative externality because the effects of the activities are not felt by the people who conduct these activities but by future generations. So a different party feels the effect which defines an externality.

Walmart is a market failiure with many "Negative Externalities" - 1 views

  •
The author of this article, Dennis Dugan, brings up many valid points as to how Wal Mart is a market failiure and how they have many negative externalities. He says one of the negative externalities they have is that because of the low wages they pay their employees, this has increased the need for publicly funded social services. I found this article very intriguing.

I like this article about Wallmart due to me not knowing this about the firm and also it clearly states why Wallmart is a market failure by buy products at very low prices causing enviromental destruction and very low wages for the workers of their supplier. What Wallmart really should do is try to find a way where they benefit their suppliers and less enviromental damage. They could do this by buy their products a little bit more expensive resulting in them having less of a profit but helping the third parties affected.

Price control on Drugs- Failure - 1 views

  •
This is an article which states the drug is now under the price control of the government. But according to it, there would be non-price control for medicine/drug options as well. It also says that the task force will serve as a framework for the new drug pricing policy. Since the government thinks that price controlling system doesn't really work for this kind of product, the drug makes are really looking forward to the new pricing policy.
  •
The government of India has decided to remove the price control that it had earlier set. They have come to the conclusion that having a price control will make the drug companies not sell non profitable products.

Overuse of farmland - 1 views

  •
In this article, the overuse of farmland is described due to the massive world population growth. It explains how the overuse of farmland is caused by different factors such as the food production and the use of biofuel. These two consumers experience a clash since they both need and want the farmland. This will most likely cause a overconsumption of the commons of farmland and result in a market failure.

Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon Falls - 1 views

  •
This article talks about the decline in deforestation in Brazil of the Amazon. It states that the deforestation in brazil has decreased dramatically from its peak in 1995, at 30 000 square km per year to 4656 square km this year. Although this doesnt seem as alot of space..its actually the size of The New York state. This has all happend due to the rising awareness of the Government to preserve the Amazon. Althoigh enviromentalists are still not completelty happy because the Brazilian government recently signed an agreement in favor of the farmers cutting down trees to increase agriculture. The Brazilians government is planing to reduce deforestation to 3925 by 2015. this is a market failure because by cutting down trees it affects the oxygen levels in the atmosphere increasing the effects of global warming.

Dying Coral Reef - 1 views

  •
The coral reefs in Sweden is an important common resource where it provides habitat for many marine life and maintains biodiversity. However increased human activities such as trawling and eutrophication has caused the number of coral reef sites from 3 to 1 and the last remaining site is in bad condition. Coral reefs, once damaged causes many of the species of marine life to disappear and extremely difficult and time staking effort is required to restore. This is an example of "tragedy of commons" and adequate measures must be made to prevent further tragedy from happening.

This article talks about the decline in coral reefs due to a virus affecting their growth. This is a huge problem for the oceans because coral reefs support around and estimated 75% of all sea life and with out them, well we wouldnt have any fish to catch. So the survival of corals in our seas is absolutely essential.

Twenty more "Niles" needed to feed growing population leaders - 0 views

  •
As all of us know, our world's population is increasing at a rapid rate. They predict that in 2025, there will be 1 more billion people on earth than their are today. So on average, they are predicting that there will be an increase in population of about 80 million people a year. Our resources that we have right now are already scarce, so it will only get tougher. Reporters say the 3 nations that will be most in need of more water will be China, India, and USA due to population growth, increasing irrigation and economic growth. Reporters also say that the amount of extra water needed is equivalent to 20 Nile Rivers. Failure to find the needed extra water could result in great conflicts over water. Also, with climate change (global warming) this will decrease the amount of available freshwater. Furthermore, the water needs to be sanitized to avoid diseases and sickness being spread. The report said that this could cost up to an extra 11 billion dollars a year. I chose this article because it is clearly related to scarcity and is growing concern in our world that needs to be looked at. 2025 is not very far away, and we need to come up with ideas for producing extra, clean water.

Thai Baht Climbs as U.S. Shutdown Cuts Dollar Demand; Bonds Rise - 0 views

  •
Thailand's baht appreciated extending a rebound from last month's three-year low to 4 percent, as U.S. lawmakers' failure to resolve a budget issue decreased demand for the dollar. Thailand also sees an increase in exports shipments of 3.9 percent in August, allowing the country to see a current-account surplus of $1.3 billion for the month. This shows how currencies can appreciate as an effect of another country's depreciation. Here, we US dollar depreciating due to less demand for it. Moreover, Thai baht also increases, supported by a current-account surplus.
