StartupNation » Benefits of a POS System for your Hospitality-based Business - 0 views

  • “POS” is an abbreviation for “point-of-sale-” the most basic POS systems calculate payment amounts and process customer payments, similar to a cash register. However, they aren’t just calculators. Most hospitality-based systems use POS systems in order to track inventory and labor costs, forecast business volumes and spot problems quickly.
  • You can also use them to plan schedules and communicate to other areas of the business.
  • Better transaction processing: Business POS systems process transactions much more quickly and with fewer errors than lower-tech methods.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Easy record storage: Using a POS system is a better way to keep records: since transaction information is stored electronically, there’s no need to save paper receipts or sales slips.
  • Information management: Retail business owners know never to underestimate the importance of good inventory management.
  • Cost savings: The chief reason most businesses switch to a POS system is cost savings.
  •
Although a POS system is a big investment. You need to purchase the new system, train the employee and maintain the system. But the system indeed can provide a lot of benefits. It can not only calculate payment and process customer payments, but also track the invenyory and labor costs. They still can manage the information and save cost.

  •
A local restaurant in LaSalle Illinois, Uptown Grill, has turned their full menu into an e-menu, or electronic menu. All customers are to use an android-based tablet in replacement of the traditional paper menu along with their entire wine menu. The e-menu is simple to use. There are two apps available to the customer one of the apps it the restaurants menu. The other renders the tablet useless if a patron were to walk out of the restaurant with, their way of decreasing the thought of theft of their new tablets. The e-menu allows for guest to find out more information for any food item on the menu, all they have to do is tap the image. It pulls up with a full description of the item along with another option, wine pairing. Their menu comes equipped with a wine paring, or suggestion, for each dish. They sell, "hundreds of different wines", and this is a great way to help guests who are inexperienced with wine. Unlocking the future: Hotels to see new security technology - Hospitality Portal - Hote... - 1 views

  • Your mobile can now literally be the key to your future and open many doors, thanks to a new technology that can have your cellphone talking to your locks.
  • Frequent travellers can now skip the check-in and check-out process into hotels, collecting keys at reception counters and spending time in lounges paying bills, thanks to Near Field Communication technology that makes mobiles do your work, says Sanjeev Anand, sales and key accounts manager, India, of VingCard Elsafe, supplier of hospitality security solutions worldwide.
  • His entry is automatically recorded on the front desk.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • The technology enables a user with an NFC-enabled mobile and a booking in an NFC-enabled hotel to breeze in and out, sans all hassles. After initial booking on arrival by flight, train or bus, the traveller's mobile is automatically loaded with an electronic wallet and encrypted code and hotel room number.
  • It can also be used to pay bills in his room or at the lobby kiosk without wasting time at the counter or stepping out of a room early to complete all formalities and hurrying to catch a flight or train.
  •
This is an amazing technology. A customer can use his cellphone to do the reservation, check-in, enter the room and pay the bill. If  this technology can be widely used in this industry. It really can bring a lot of convenience to both the hotels and the customers. It is also very safe, because only your cellphone can open your room and the cellphone is also a identification of a customer. But there are two concerns. First is the cost of this technology and the hardware. It can be too much to afford for the hotels. Second, is it really that safety. What if someone lose his mobile?

Arguments Against the Cloud - What Is Cloud Computing? | PCMag.com - 1 views

  • n part, that comes from the potential for crashes. When there are problems at a company like Amazon, which provides cloud storage services to big name companies like Netflix and Pinterest, it can take out all those services (as happened in the summer of 2012). Last year in 2014, outages afflicted Dropbox, Gmail, Basecamp, Adobe, Evernote, iCloud, and Microsoft. Usually for just hours.
  • After all, there's no central body governing use of the cloud for storage and services. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is trying. It created an IEEE Cloud Computing Initiative in 2011 to establish standards for use, especially for the business sector. Last year's Supreme Court ruling against Aereo could have told us a lot about copyright of files in the cloud... but the court side-stepped the issue to keep cloud computing status quo. Cloud computing—like so much about the Internet—is a little bit like the Wild West, where the rules are made up as you go, and you hope for the best.
  •
This article explains the basics of Cloud Computing and how more companies are converting to the "Cloud." The article will also detail the pros and cons of Cloud Computing and highlight current issues concerning this growing technology.

Our E-Waste Problem Is Ridiculous, and Gadget Makers Aren't Helping | WIRED - 1 views

  • Oh sure, many companies have green initiatives. Apple in particular has made notable, documented efforts to reduce its carbon footprint, powering a majority of its retail stores and data centers with renewable energy, developing more efficient packaging design, and designing products that use less power than their predecessors. But if your products are going to be tossed out in a year, none of that is particularly brag-worthy. That’s a tremendous amount of wasted resources.
  • In the past, computers were designed to be relatively easy to disassemble, like HP’s towers and older versions of the Mac Mini. You could swap out dead parts and batteries, add more memory if it got sluggish, even replace a motherboard. But in the mid-2000s, things started to change. Apple introduced the ultra-thin, ultra-light MacBook Air and the industry enthusiastically followed with heaping helpings of devices that, while slim, were very difficult to repair due to the construction compromises required to achieve that svelte profile. Smartphones and tablets followed with an even faster purchasing and chucking cycle.
  • Therefore, the easier it is to disassemble something, the more likely it is to be worth someone’s time to recycle it. And that’s where issues arise
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • “The big problem the electronics industry is facing as a whole is products are getting lighter and lighter,” iFixit’s Kyle Wiens said. “This is great for consumers but a nightmare for recyclers.” Smaller, lighter products can be tricky to take apart, and yield a lower volume of raw materials.
  • Glue and adhesives are a common hurdle. Products like the iPad and Microsoft Surface achieve a slim form factor by using “a metric duckload of adhesive,” as Wiens once put it, particularly to keep the battery in place. All that glue must be removed before any recyclable material can be melted down. And battery recycling is risky endeavorin the best of circumstances—under the right conditions, a damaged battery can cause a fiery explosion. Tack onto that the need to painstakingly pry a battery from its glue-smeared lodging and you’ve got a delicate task indeed. For items with a lot of glue, like a tablet display, Sims Recycling Solutions heats the glue, then uses suction cups to apply pressure across the glass so it can be removed without cracking. Other things that can make a product more challenging to recycle include the number of screws (particularly non-standard screws), the inclusion of hazardous materials like mercury (which is declining, due to the rising popularity of LEDs instead of bulbs), large amounts of glass, and plastics. Waterproof and tightly sealed products also are more arduous to deal with.
  • As we rush headlong into a world in which we’re disposing of more and more gadgets each year, making them easily recyclable should be a growing priority of device makers. Just as display size, processor speed and energy efficiency are marketing points, so too should recyclability.
  • David Thompson, Panasonic’s head of environmental affairs, says the standardization of screws and plastic resin materials, not thermally setting screws in plastic, and minimizing the use of glue will boost recycling efforts, as will designing products for easier disassembly. Would consumers really decry, or even notice, these changes? Probably not. But such changes could require concessions to slim dimensions and light weight. And for manufacturers, increased standardization may mean fewer distinctions between competing products. Take a plastic smartphone housing: Currently there are hundreds of variations (soft touch, textures, and metallic colors, to name a few). Standardization could limit that very marketable variety. Even so, some products are embracing such ideals. Dell won The Institute for Scrap Recycling Industries 2014 Design for Recycling award for the Latitude 10 and XPS 10 tablets and Latitude E7240 notebook. Aside making its products cheap and easy to recycle, Dell has used nearly 8 million pounds of recycled plastic in its desktop and display production. And it is not alone.
  •
I found an interesting article about how the big computer companies can recycle the computers. This can solve some of the main problem about the recycling. The article is referring to idea that computers may become bigger size but easier to recycle. In other words we might wanna make a step back in the past, when we was able to just replace one detail from the computer instead of throwing it away.

The Future of Hospitality Hangs in Balance of Mobile and Social Implementation - 2 views

  •
Hospitality Industry is seeing a increase in bookings of hotel rooms, airplanes reservations, and even dining reservations through mobile devices. Expedia website belives there will be an increase to 32 million people using mobile devices to book hospitality venues in 2016. Expedia has also noticed that many people are booking same night hotel reservations from their mobile devices. Many people who are using their mobile devices for booking are under the age of 30 years old. National Restaurant Association also confirm that a younger generation is using mobile technology to find a restaurant, from booking a reservation, to looking at menus, also even ordering their meals and paying for it using their mobile devices. Another thing is that mobile devices are being used to do research on restaurants and reading reviews before choosing a particular venue. A downfall to this mobile outbreak is how do hospitality establishments respond to bad reviews. The response to a bad review can make or break your establishment in my opinion. Many restauant owners are asking themeselves how can I take this social and mobile technology and introduce it to my concept and goals. So my feeling is that the hospitality industry is embracing mobile and social technology as it grows. However, are they embracing it fast enough? It seems to me the customers who use mobile and social technology are growing more rapidly.
  •
It will be soon that all hotels go to using mobile check-in. We have implemented it on our current Hilton hotel and this technology gives the guest the power to pick their own room within the hotel, electronically check in from their phone, as well as use their phone screen code to unlock their room door. It all but eliminates the need of a front desk staff upon a guest's arrival. Without the personal communication I believe that some of a guest's experience is taken away, however there is no slowing down this technology and the use of it within the hotel industry. I agree in the fact that management has to stay educated and up to speed about how all of this technology operates as well as the affects it can have on their operational scores. On a positive side, management might cut some of their labor costs by having this technology act as a sort of hourly employee.

Why Indian hotels are not riding the cloud - The Financial Express - 0 views

  • Though cloud based PMS is gaining momentum in the global hospitality market, it still has a long way to go in India as hotels are hesitant to adopt it.
  • Today PMSs have become more powerful, with features that enhance efficiency, improve control over processes, enable faster delivery of services, and engender guest loyalty. But among the biggest trends in PMS is cloud computing. The introduction of cloud based PMS has revolutionised the hospitality industry globally as it has opened up a vast array of features, allowing hotels to work in a new environment that is highly efficient, secured and technical, and minimises human errors. It also allows easy accessibility anywhere across the world and can be customised according to the hotel’s requirements.
  • despite the benefits, cloud based PMS still hasn’t been able to gain the much needed impetus in the India market. Concerns over internet connection loss and data security are the two consistent arguments against cloud-based PMS.
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • current internet infrastructure is not yet robust enough to handle the requirement of property system in terms of speed, up-time and minimum delay.” Security is another issue. “It definitely is more viable but less secure as information is literally in an unknown electronic cloud. However, with this technology, access of information has become much easier and larger data can be stored and accessed at any given time,” mentions Apte. Though these are legitimate concerns, hotels need to find themselves a professional, dependable and trustworthy cloud PMS vendor.
  • Centralised PMS is a potential capital cost saving option for any property owner which will help him to minimise the entire project cost. The saving comes through many aspects like hardware cost, data centre space, electricity, air-conditioning, fire suppression cost in data center, etc.
  • Interactive mobile PMS application and self check-in kiosks is going to be the future trend. This will help the hospitality industry to eliminate the fixed desk concept in the lobby area. Self check-in and in-car check-in will help guests to access his room in minimum time after exhaustive office hours and hectic travel
  • As for Holiday Inn Mumbai International Airport, the OPERA PMS system in the hotel offers several modules including housekeeping, reservations and account receivable. “It is well interfaced and connected with the outside world for online reservation from different portals and our own website holidayinn.com
  • There were days when guests would enter the hotel and line up at the counters to get their room and compete the check-in formalities. With our mobile check-in app guests can now check in a day prior, get their allotted room and even complete basic check-in formalities such as ID or passport scan right from their smartphones,” reveals Apte. Another initiative on its way at the hotel is the mobile concierge. Guests would be able to order room dining, get their laundries ordered or even request for a dental kit from their smartphones. “High speed internet, smart TVs, mobile check-in, mobile integrated room controls, etc are some of the factors that each guest highly prefer. Guests even desire internet access and Wi-Fi in the hotel cars and we have provided each of these services. With our PMS solution you can set parameters important to your enterprise. It offers a friendlier user interface, while ensuring easy maintenance, faster updates and greater security
  • emergence of cloud computing has made centralised PMS a reality. Definitely, hotels in the future would opt for a centralised PMS as even today we co depend on each other for information. Making it centralised would mean access to information at any given point for use in any part of the country. A definite time efficient system to opt for
  • With such advancements, the hospitality sector is on its way to become a highly technology oriented sector where manual tasks and services are no longer required
  •
This is a great article highlighting the cons of of cloud-based PMS. In India, the infrastructure is not developed enough for hotels to rely on a cloud-based PMS. While the hotel industry is slowly adopting things such as mobile check-in, there is great hesitation to adopt the cloud-based PMS. The Internet in India is not reliable therefore it would not be efficient for hotels to send all their data to the cloud. In the event of an outage, the hotels would not be able to operate. There are also many concerns over data security; Indian hotels are worried about transferring secure information to an "unknown" place. Yet, individualized properties are looking forward to centralizing PMS and perhaps embracing cloud-based PMS in the near future. Only time will tell how long it will take the Indian hotel industry to become more technology oriented.

Security and technology coming together for locks in 2015 | Hotel Management - 0 views

  • Many electronic lock manufacturers strongly recommend evaluating and focusing more on security if a hotel is making the move to mobile access locks.
  • “Poor implementation can be a risk,”
  • “Whenever a new layer of technology is added, security needs to be increased as well.”
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • The security of a mobile door lock is part of a larger challenge of guest security as hoteliers have access to more guest data.
  • Mrowczynski cautions hoteliers to increase security at the back-end of the hotel—employees can be a threat to security with mobile technology as well. He also said every room lock should be bench-tested. “As long as everything is researched, tested and retested, everyone will be fine,” he said.
  •
This article serves as a good reminder that as hotels adopt certain technologies to enhance the guest experience, it is also important to remember to test and retest these new technologies for possible security concerns. The thought of being able to open your hotel room door with your cell phone is appealing and convenient, but also comes with some security concerns that traditional key cards do not. On the other hand, some argue that RFID chips would actually make door locks more secure, and make it easier to track who enters the hotel room and when. Either way, security concerns always have to be considered when adopting new technologies.

Why You Need a POS System in a Restaurant - 0 views

  • If you are planning a very small operation, such as bagel or sandwich shop, you may not need a POS system at the opening time, especially if you aren’t going to take credit cards
  • ou will need to replace parts, update software and eventually need to replace it entirely with a new model. New POS systems come with limited warranties and tech support, but just like every other piece of equipment, the problems always seem to start after the warranty has run out.
  • If it happens to crash and you don’t have a backup, then you risk losing all your data, not just sales, but profit and loss statements and payroll statements.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • POS system acts as a time clock, it can also help prepare payroll. This can save you a lot of money in your bookkeeping department. Along with the daily operations of running a restaurant, a POS system can organize profit and loss statement and sales tax.
  • Another benefit of a restaurant POS program is that it can track everything from food usage to the most popular menu items.
  • One benefit of a POS system is that it simplifies communications between the kitchen and the wait staff.
  • This makes swiping credit cards more secure for both the customer and the business. Servers are accountable for all their sales, and it is impossible to alter checks in the computer unless you have the password. This helps cut down on employee theft.
  • This computerized system allows business owners to track sales, cash flow, food inventory and can help simplify your bookkeeping enormously.
  •
This article discusses the importance of having a Point of Sale, or POS, system in your restaurant and its many roles in the operations of the business. POS systems track all sales transaction up to the minute. It also accounts for all employees' operations. Of course, there are pros and cons to every system. One pro of a POS is the direct connection to the kitchen staff. Once the server places the order, a ticket is printed in the kitchen thus helping to eliminate miscommunication and create efficiencies between servers and kitchen staff. Another positive stated was a POS system helps cut back on employee theft since the system logs employee actions and makes it difficult to alter items in the system. Additionally, POS systems can help substantially with the bookkeeping operations. POSs can track and collect data regarding popular and unpopular food and menu items. The system also can help with accounting and show payroll as well as profit and loss statements. One of the drawbacks of a POS is the susceptibility to electronic issues, such as hardware failure or system crashes. If there is a catastrophic crash to the system, the restaurant could lose all of its sales data as well as payroll statements and other important documents. Therefore, having a backup is important, but expensive. Additionally, while the POS system typically comes with a warranty, it would be smart to have an IT person employed who can set up the POSs and update the device or software and address any problems the POS network may encounter. Again, this adds cost. In the end, Point of Sale systems are an overwhelmingly positive tool for the restaurant industry. However, restauranteurs need to be aware of the issues and plan accordingly to run a smooth operation.
  •
This article talks about POS. POS-point of sales is a hardware that used in the hospitality industry, mostly used in the restaurant. It's a tool you can accept the payment of customers and count the transaction. Modern POS system provides a platform to help customers to enhance the experience. It's also an easy communication with kitchen and wait staff. It can maximize the revenue. But some issues are POS systems come with limited warranties and tech support. I think companies need to ask for help with the IT advisor In the hospitality industry, tough competition and thin margins, we need to get more value from POS.

New Report from Oracle Hospitality: Creating the Coveted Hotel Guest Experience | Oracl... - 0 views

  •
This article from Oracle discusses the importance of technology in Hotels. Guests, now days, will be more loyal to certain amenities versus name brands. For example guests used to say ' I only say at Marriott's' whereas now they might say ' I only stay at hotels that offer paying via an app and ordering food electronically'. Positions like concierge and room service attendants are either a thing of the past or the positions will have to be redefined to allow for the incoming Technological advances guests expect. Guests also do not care about sharing personal information to better enhance their experience. They prefer a more individualized experience instead of a ' package- like' experience. These expectations of the guests are the driving force in completions between hotels. The more advanced hotel is sought out more even though the upfront cost might make the profit margins thin.

Global E-waste To Hit 49.8M Tons By 2018 -- Here's What Japan Is Doing To Combat It - 0 views

  •
After participating in this week's discussion on e-waste I got curious. I found an article discussing the increasing amount of e-waste in Asia. According to the article, e-waste is increasing by 63% every 5 years since 2015. Asia in also the largest manufacture and marker for electrical and electronic equipment that is not intend for re-use. So you have to wonder where does is all go? If it's not stuffed into a draw, then it's probably in a landfill. But countries like Japan are getting creative, they have pledged to collect tons of e-waste to create the medals for the upcoming Olympic games. There also many organizations in Japan that are implanting recycling and collection program to eliminate the amount of e-waste that ends up in a landfill or this taken to a factory where they it is then broken down and burned causing toxic gases to enter the surrounding environment and atmosphere.

The article is a study that was conducted in regards to the security management within a hotel and how an effective security system can help in preventing accidents or emergencies from occuring. The main priority of a hotel or any establishment, besides the service provided, is having an effective emergency plan set in place to be able to respond and overcome a crisis. International hospitality being a focus over the recent years, has suffered crises, risks, and disasters causing negative impacts on tourism and the community. Hotels should "issue a check-list concerning a hotel's vulnerability to emergencies caused by natural disasters (hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis) or man-made crises (terrorist attacks, explosions, fires, spill, food poisoning)." Another part of the plan is to focus on the loss prevention aspect of a hotel by implementing information technology to secure or improve security. On technology mentioned was biometric to increase the hotel information system and also to help reduce cost and improve the way we recognize criminal activities. With the hospitality industry being one of the most vulnerable industries to crimes and disasters, it is important to recognize, improve and update the plans set into place to ensure accurate information. While it's impossible to say that these preventions are going to stop these problems from happening, it can help other learn about the proper steps to handling these situations. I personally think that as much as employers suggest different way, it's the job of the loss prevention team in every industry to construct a plan that address as many issues and conduct trainings that would help to prepare us for these occasions. Trainings are going to be the best way to properly analyze a problem and improve on the emergency plan set.
