Integrating Tablets and POS Software For Retail - 0 views

  • Good Technology's quarterly data report from July, 2011, shows that the iPad made up 27 percent of all workplace device activations during the quarter, second only to the iPhone
  • a national survey by RIS (Retail Info Systems) News reports that 28 percent of retailers are currently testing tablets in their stores, while 31 percent plan to try them out this year.
  •
More and more retail stores are converting to iPad tablets as their POS software. Some stores are using them only for customer internet searches and product display capabilities but many are starting to use them for bigger tasks such as checking inventory and entering product orders. This takes away the need to run back and forth between the stock room and sales floor with pen and paper. As a result, customer service is increased because sales floor presence is greater. Some benefits of order management using the tablets as their POS software are increased employee productivity, reduced out-of-stocks, and more payment flexibility. Now you can use tablets as payment devices with credit cards.  DecisionPoint Systems, a leading provider of mobile and wireless systems for retailers, is now offering an application to help retailers personalize their customers' shopping experience. Aruba Networks has recently presented a new tablet-based software that allows customers to check out from anywhere in the store. Having worked in the retail industry for many years, I think this technology for back-office purposes is very useful. One of my employers had started using tablet technology during my time there and I can attest that it does increase employee productivity. It makes doing inventories, size checks, and ordering management so much easier and faster. Employees are able to stay on the sales floor longer which is especially beneficial in the case of being short-staffed or during shift changes. However, I am a bit skeptical about using these tablets as a form of check out from anywhere in the store. Unless the store has security measures in place for this, it does not seem very theft resistant. Especially in a clothing retailer in which sensors need to be removed. The cashier would have to be carrying around a sensor remover at the time of check-out to make this system really time-saving.

HNN - How to prevent, handle employee theft - 0 views

  • No employer hires an employee thinking he or she is someday going to steal. Hoteliers need to take steps to prevent theft and be cautious in taking action against an employee after a suspected theft. Both have practical and legal implications.
  • The first step is prevention.
  • Maintain a well-publicized policy covering searches of employees’ lockers or personal belongings. Conduct searches in a manner that minimizes confrontation, is minimally invasive and conducted with the dignity of the employee in mind.

How Employee Time Tracking Software Transforms Hotel Management - 0 views

  • The quality of staff management affects every aspect of the guest experience.
  • Since the cost of labor is a significant expense, optimizing human capital is paramount. Time tracking software is the answer for streamlining employee hospitality timekeeping and scheduling.
  • Employee scheduling requires: Forecasting occupancy Matching staffing demands to expected occupancy Creating shift schedules Adapting schedules to changes Accommodating employee availability and preferences
  • ...8 more annotations...
  • The solution for efficient and cost-effective employee management is advanced time and attendance software. Let’s discuss some of the benefits.
  • Cloud-based time and attendance eliminates hardware compatibility issues. This was a shortcoming of older enterprise systems. With cloud computing, all players can access work information from any internet-enabled device.
  • With an online shift trade board, the manager posts open shifts when an employee calls in sick before the shift begins. If the employee fails to call and just doesn’t show up, the system signals that a worker neglected to clock in. The system sends alerts to all available workers. The current schedule feeds information to the trade board. The system knows which workers are already working and, therefore, unavailable.
  • he manager approves the trade which triggers a confirmation alert to the applicable employee.
  • Time and attendance software remembers everyone’s availability and schedule requests.
  • Any business is susceptible to time theft. Since many hotel employees are unsupervised, the hospitality industry is especially vulnerable.
  • US employers pay millions a year in unnecessary wages due to time theft. A biometric time clock paired with a time tracking system allows managers to apply schedule lockouts and break rules.
  • Time tracking software handles the complex logistics of multiple employee types and pay rates. These include overtime calculations, accruals tracking, break tracking, and absence management.
  •
With technology constantly updating and hotels getting larger and obtaining more employees, it is important to have a system that is keeping up with the times, and makes bosses work a little easier and more efficient. With the time tracking software it does all of that. The software allows managers to have available employees cover shifts, it ensures there will be no time theft, it keeps track of overtime, pay rates, absences and more. The system is cost effective because it does not hold up the employer in the office all day, and with the watches out for the time thieves. This system does everything a manual tracker can do and more. It is extremely efficient.

Safety Security and Loss Prevention During Hospitality Emergencies - Disaster Recovery ... - 0 views

  • Emergency preparedness should be a major part of the hospitality managers’ duties; they must work side by side with other tourism organizations to be prepared well to assist and save the lives of the tourist before, during and after the catastrophic events, and should adopt an updated effective emergency plan.
  • Safety and security are classified as the most important factors in the hospitality industry. Pizam et al., (1997) argued that safety and security are the most important factors to the tourist, and the first in mind when planning to travel.
  • The effective usage of safety surveillance such as closed circuit television (CCTV), electric emergency generators, body guards, fire extinguishers, fire sprinklers, emergency lights will maintain the security procedures adopted by the hotels to ensure their guests' safety, and updated emergency plans to confirm the emergency preparedness and effective planning to overcome the potential risks.

  • Hotels should issue a check-list concerning a hotel’s vulnerability to emergencies caused by natural disasters (hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis) or man-made crises (terrorist attacks, explosions, fires, spill, food poisoning).
  • This will transmit a positive image: hospitality may gain a lot by using its safety and security as a marketing tool to attract more tourists to the destination.
  •
This article was very interesting and it was about how safety security is very important to the hospitality industry. This article also explained how a study shows the safety and security systems work in the hospitality industry. They also said that it is very important to update the emergency plan because you never know when something going to happen in the hotel and you always have to be ready for anything. This study just showed how an effective information system could prevent and being well prepared can definitely help prevent any emergency.
  •
The article is a study that was conducted in regards to the security management within a hotel and how an effective security system can help in preventing accidents or emergencies from occuring. The main priority of a hotel or any establishment, besides the service provided, is having an effective emergency plan set in place to be able to respond and overcome a crisis. International hospitality being a focus over the recent years, has suffered crises, risks, and disasters causing negative impacts on tourism and the community. Hotels should "issue a check-list concerning a hotel's vulnerability to emergencies caused by natural disasters (hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis) or man-made crises (terrorist attacks, explosions, fires, spill, food poisoning)." Another part of the plan is to focus on the loss prevention aspect of a hotel by implementing information technology to secure or improve security. On technology mentioned was biometric to increase the hotel information system and also to help reduce cost and improve the way we recognize criminal activities. With the hospitality industry being one of the most vulnerable industries to crimes and disasters, it is important to recognize, improve and update the plans set into place to ensure accurate information. While it's impossible to say that these preventions are going to stop these problems from happening, it can help other learn about the proper steps to handling these situations. I personally think that as much as employers suggest different way, it's the job of the loss prevention team in every industry to construct a plan that address as many issues and conduct trainings that would help to prepare us for these occasions. Trainings are going to be the best way to properly analyze a problem and improve on the emergency plan set.

How to Select an HRIS - 0 views

  • Step 1: Initial Assessment
  • if the department has the need but does not have the time available to take on the data-gathering and evaluation process, hiring a consultant to assist with this process may be a wise choice.
  • Step 2: Assessing Organizational Needs
  • ...17 more annotations...
  • HR professionals should look beyond the needs of the HR department and consider the strategic plans of the organization.
  • the minimum system requirements for each organization will differ to some degree. However, each organization will need a system that will gather, organize and securely maintain employee data.
  • An ESS allows employees to view and update their personal information in the system.
  • The greater the value that the organization will see from the module, the more likely it could be considered a need versus a want.
  • Step 3: Assessing the Project Parameters
  • Budgetary constraints
  • Step 6: Request for Proposal (RFP)
  • Technological constraints
  • it is essential to ensure sufficient lead time to complete the request for proposal (RFP), technology selection and review, and implementation processes.
  • Step 4: Evaluating Available Packages Against Needs and Project Parameters
  • The specific needs and requirements can be listed down the left-hand side of the spreadsheet, and the vendors and products to be assessed can be added across the top.
  • Following an initial elimination of packages and providers that do not fit the needs of the organization, it is time to take a more critical view of the remaining options.
  • A time clock-based system may be more effective in a manufacturing environment in which all employees pass through specific entry and exit portals and all work is performed onsite. Matching the system availability with the needs of the organization will help ensure a better value on the investment.
  • Step 5: Selecting the Project Committee
  • Time constraints
  • Step 7: Demonstration and Evaluation
  • Step 8: Choosing Between the Finalists
  •
Many HRIS choices are available at different price points providing different levels of functionality. Given the importance of the choice the employer is making, the package selected should meet its current needs and have the flexibility to grow and expand with the organization into the foreseeable future. However, constraints from budgets, hardware and time will affect the choice made.

What Brain-Computer Interfaces Could Mean for the Future of Work - 0 views

  • Brain computer interfaces (BCIs) are slowly moving into the mass market. In the next few years, we might be able to control our PowerPoint presentation or Excel files using only our brains. And companies may want to use BCI technology to monitor the attention levels and mental states of their employees
  • imagine if you could prepare your next presentation using only your thoughts. These scenarios might soon become a reality thanks to the development of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs).
  • I expect to see a growing number of professionals leveraging BCI tools to improve their performance at work. For example, your BCI could detect that your attention level is too low compared with the importance of a given meeting or task and trigger an alert. It could also adapt the lighting of your office based on how stressed you are, or prevent you from using your company car if drowsiness is detected.
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • A Toronto-based startup called “Muse” has developed a sensing headband that gives real-time information about what’s going on in your brain.
  • In the next few years, we might be able to control our PowerPoint presentation or Excel files using only our brains. Some prototypes can translate brain activity into text or instructions for a computer, and in theory, as the technology improves, we’ll see people using BCIs to write memos or reports at work.
  • Experts believe that around “15-30% of individuals are inherently not able to produce brain signals robust enough to operate a BCI.” Obviously, this situation can lead to wrong results and ultimately bad decisions from companies. BCIs still have a long way to go, and much improvement is needed.
  • Despite these promising results, some experts, such as Theodore Zanto, a director of the UCSF neuroscience program, say that while BCIs based on EEG scans can determine a user’s attention levels, they are as of yet still incapable of differentiating what the user is actually focused on.
  • Researchers are also experimenting with “passthoughts” as an alternative to passwords. Soon, we might log into our various devices and platforms using our thoughts. As described in this IEEE Spectrum article, “When we perform mental tasks like picturing a shape or singing a song in our heads, our brains generate unique neuronal electrical signals. A billion people could mentally hum the same song and no two brain-wave patterns generated by that task would be alike. An electroencephalograph (EEG) would read those brain waves using noninvasive electrodes that record the signals. The unique patterns can be used like a password or biometric identification.”
  • BCIs aren’t a perfect technology — there’s no telling what sort of mistakes or mishaps we’ll encounter as companies and individuals begin to use these devices in the real-world. What’s more, BCIs — like any technology — can be hacked. Hackers can access a BCI headband and create/send manipulated EEG data. A hacker could also intercept and alter all data transmitted by your BCI. It’s possible that a hacker could steal your “passthoughts” user credentials and interact with your devices (laptop, car, etc.). These risks can directly impact our physical integrity. Brain data could also be stolen to be used against you for extortion purposes. The potential for serious abuse is significant.
  •
This article is on Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) and what the future of the work environment could be. Based on the information published, employers would have the ability to leverage brain activities to effect greater productivity in the workplace. However, since BCIs are capable of detecting the mental state and thoughts of employees, there are many privacy and ethical issues that will certainly be derived from the use of these types of technologies.

Illinois' BIPA allows for private enforcement, stiff fines, and paying of attorney fees. BIPA prohibits collection, capture, purchasing or receiving a customer's biometric identifier/information. Safeguarding this data is perhaps more important than any other because it cannot be easily changed, if at all. Current lack of federal law and a patchwork of local regulations means that businesses and employees must be knowledgeable of rules and rights that affect them.

In the hotel industry, property management systems (PMS) or hotel operating systems are platforms that “enabled a hotel or group of hotels to manage front-office capabilities, such as booking reservations, guest check-in/check-out, room assignment, managing room rates, and billing” ( Oracle, 2019).
  • These systems have also evolved to incorporate functionality that supports food and beverage operations, housekeeping and maintenance management, as well as revenue management.
  • Applications such as Cloudbeds, Preno, Hostaway and Lodgify have become a staple in most hotels today, allowing for the efficient management of hotel fun ctio ns.
  • Similarly, in the restaurant industry, practitioners often rely on restaurant management systems (RMS), POS software designed for the food service industry to make bookings, capture transactions, record orders and manage inventory (FinancesOnline, 2019).
  • At the broader tourism management level, GDS, also known as automated reservation systems or CRS, are computerised networks that centralise services and provide travel related transactions for products such as airline tickets, hotel rooms and car rentals ( Kelly, 2018)
  • GDS serve as a conduit between travel bookers and suppliers and help communicate product offerings, pricing and availability to travel agents and online booking engines.
  • Their functionality and applications are often limited to a specific industry (e.g. hotel, restaurant and airline)
  • Internally, cloud computing allows managers to access data collected from proprietary applications (e.g. RMS, PMS) which can be shared across departments.
  • This data can be accessed from anywhere around the world on demand
  •
This paper discusses the role of PMS, POS, and GDS in the hospitality and tourism industry. It identifies key digital literacy and employability skills that students and educators need to develop to better understand and negotiate the changing, digitally focused landscape of the hospitality and tourism sector.

  • two UN SDG8 recommendations for policy and action: ‘[a]dopt a human-centred approach to embracing new technologies’ and ‘[s]hape the impacts of digitalisation with public policies’ (UN, 2019United Nations (UN). (2019, July 10).
  • Two aspects of surveillance capitalism hold explanatory power for understanding the potential direction of the worker condition and are drawn upon throughout this paper: first, worker freedom is replaced with digital monitoring, behavioural manipulation and other forms of worker performance management through instrumentarian power; and second, production mechanisms shift to create certainty of outcome through reducing (or replacing) worker autonomy (Zuboff, 2019Zuboff, S. (2019).

  • The economic rationality for technology adoption (Morozov, 2013Morozov, E. (2013). To save everything, click here: Technology, solutionism, and the urge to fix problems that don’t exist. Allen Lane. [Google Scholar]) is built around cost minimisation and organisational effectiveness. Technology is often discursively framed as a tool for achieving sustainability (Gretzel et al., 2015Gretzel, U., Sigala, M., Xiang, Z., & Koo, C. (2015).
  • A disruptive product offers a ‘distinct set of benefits, typically focused around being cheaper, more convenient, or simpler’, and has a power to transform a market ‘sometimes to the point of upending previously dominant companies’ (Guttentag, 2015Guttentag, D. (2015).
  • Worldwide, accommodation and food service roles are estimated to be at greatest risk of being automated out (78% risk) by 2030 largely due to the high number of automatable interactions and predictable physical work (McKinsey, 2017McKinsey. (2017).
  • it can become difficult for human workers to compete with intelligent automation. These systems have the potential to reduce the need for lower-skilled tourism roles involving routine and interactive tasks as well as significantly decreasing the tasks required from human workers (Ivanov, 2020Ivanov, S. (2020).
  • The move towards quantifying human actions into analysable data to drive well-intentioned (from a business mindset) interventions, is a form of techno-solutionism (Morozov, 2013Morozov, E. (2013).
  • detail how advances in sensing and recording technology have led to expansions in surveillance. These technological developments extract worker data that is often visible to managers but not always workers, and this power asymmetry means the data can be mined for pro-managerial, pro-business insights that can work against employee interests. Data can be collected on individual worker speed and accuracy, with adherence to process serving as proxy for ability (Beer, 2018Beer, D. (2018)

This lengthy article provides a grim outlook for the lowly skilled/paid worker in the workforce when technology has been applied to improve outcomes in management. The article insinuates that companies/employers benefit likely at the expense of employees who are affected by technological innovation. Three key points are emphasized in that surveillance capitalism, disruption innovation and techno-solutionism are behind the pushout of low-skilled workers. And companies are not providing a solution to improving a sustainable economy and sustainable workforce which are goals of the United Nations. However, the United Nation's goals are not keeping up with societal trends. Surveillance Capitalism can be construed as digital monitoring in the workplace. Used as a way to control and manipulate performance outcomes which may shift to automation if employees don't perform. Further disruption innovation is defined as a "disruptive product that has particular benefits that focus on the cheap and easy that have the power to overturn markets". This is seen with automating basic tasks in food service such as ordering. Finally, the use of technology as an excuse to "rationalize" cost-cutting/management changes is what is considered Techno-solutionism. This article highlights various technologies already in use in the industry, most with much success and a few that did not pan out. Trial and error, but at the cost of retaining employees.

Tourism is paying a heavy price to accommodate a growing trend making "people" expendable. The competition isn't comparable and unless we change our processes and thinking in how we use technology more jobs will be gone. We can't be an all-knowing, 24/7 never tires robot. The industry is undermining the value of a person. Ridding themselves of them has larger implications for society and our future. Eventually, it could be us too. What value do we offer? And how do we enhance humans over technology?
