The essay contest for 2009-10 is not up yet, but the topic is the effectiveness of nonviolent civic action. My students participated last year when the topic was crimes against humanity and it lead to really great discussions.

Congress thinks people should know what's going on. I know, I'm skeptical, too. But they asked the Library of Congress to create this site where students can find out how government works or doesn't. Track bills, check up on your Congressman, or visit the LEARN section midway down the homepage for links to sections on how laws are made, how the Supreme Court works and a host of primary source documents sorted by theme: The American Revolution and New Nation; National Expansion and Reform; and Civil War & Reconstruction.

From 1939 to 1953, nearly one million people were deported to the Gulag from the European territories annexed by the USSR at the start of the Second World War and those that came under Soviet influence after the War: some to work camps but most as forced settlers in villages in Siberia and Central Asia. An international team of researchers has collected 160 statements from former deportees, photographs of their lives, documents from private and public archives and films. Many of these witnesses had never spoken out before. In these statements and these documents, the Museum invites you to explore a neglected chapter of the history of Europe.

An excellent collection of documents relating to American history from the 1750s to the 1870s.

A site which offers 3D downloads of historic sites. There aren't many there yet but it looks well-resources so should probably grow. Has Macchu Picchu and some sites in Europe and Asia.

"Documenting the American South (DocSouth) is a digital publishing initiative that provides Internet access to texts, images, and audio files related to southern history, literature, and culture. Currently DocSouth includes twelve thematic collections of books, diaries, posters, artifacts, letters, oral history interviews, and songs." That's what they say. Run by the University of North Carolina.

Not sure if I've already bookmarked another page from this site. It's a repository of European heritage, which for us means sources and images. I think it will become quite a massive repository of sources for all periods and regions of Europe.

Spearhead by former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, Our Courts is a web-based education project designed to reinvigorate civics learning inside and outside the classroom. "Do I Have a Right" and "Supreme Decision" (the first games on the site released in fall 2009) are geared for middle school students.

Site is maintained by a prof at the University of Saskatchewan and contains some selections from Graeco-Roman writers. Focus on Classical Athens and Augustan Rome.

I've got a new boss these days and she's getting us to use graphic organisers and reading strategies and such things. I was sceptical at first, but now I'm a convert. Do many people use graphic organisers in class?

I use them for thinking maps, to show how concepts and ideas are related, as flow charts when necessary, as a way to show comparisons and contrasts and as a way to show umbrella terms and then related terms.

I'm definitely a convert. I now spend the first half of each lesson going through the content and the second half skills-building using graphic organisers, summarising, etc.

A class website run by Dan Ewert in the States. It's not maintained anymore but is still a good example of what can be done even with something as simple as WordPress. Very cool.
