Those of you who have read about the Netflix contest probably know it's fascinating, and this NYTimes blog presents a good summary. More interesting is the fact that this type of work on algorithms may have other applications, beyond telling you what other movies you might like (e.g. commercial, scientific, perhaps even educational?). Therefore, it is tangentially related with our discussion on AI :)

But as usual, the vision of this new world mirrors present paradigms just with futuristic technical applicatios...playing vinyl records and adjusting the rabbit-ears on their TV to watch Survivor Season 325

Check out this site which is like getting the info of a facebook profile and more. Imagine what kind of info search engines like this could generate for a teacher about an entire class. Or what students can find out about each other and their teachers. . .

Really? Social Analytics to discover whether you're gay. Their methodology seems like common sense. but I still question the conclusions. Especially since it wasn't tested.

An easy way to make time-lapse videos could be great in the classroom, especially for science. I can picture setting up a camera on the little seeds that kids plant for mother's day and then when they send home their flowers they can also watch a youtube video with mom showing the flower grow from start to finish - literally. Watch a culture grow.  Document behavior in the classroom and play back for parents quickly...the possibilities are endless.  

Great site with lots of innovative ideas.  I love the idea of 3-D instruction manuals.  Finally, a chance to put my furniture together right the first time.  

My neighbors, who spent the last 2-3 years teaching in Japan, introduced me to this site. They have online tutorials and games based on some 15 years of research into the most efficient ways to acquire knowledge. http://smart.fm/about/learning_science talks about their research; noteworthy is the "Ebbinghaus forgetting curve," which basically shows that the best way to remember something is to remember it just before you're about to forget it. Check out their "BrainSpeed" game. Much more fun than flash cards.

Check out this informal use of AR called Urban Sleuth. In addition to participating the platform also allows you to create your own content. Might be something fun to do as a cohort before it gets too chilly!

Using computer games as well as interactive visuals in the classroom, students are taught fractions, equations, comparisons and other math processes. Later, they learn the vocabulary and symbols that go with the subject matter. It's a high-tech version of the paper money and metal coins that instructors have long used to teach about currency.

An article describing how AR apps for cellphones could provide users with location-based data using barcode tagging.

This program, Mscape by HP, allows users of Windows Mobile phones to create their own place-dependent AR experiences (games, guided tours, etc.) utilizing the internal GPS of the phone. Users can share and post their "Mediascapes" online and download Mediascapes created by others.

I have always felt a little guilty about printing out online readings. Just as the reading for online discussion tips describes, longer text can be difficult to digest when viewed from a screen. This device is the first of its kind and without a doubt will undergo significant innovations to make it more consumer freindly...think mainframe vs. Apple IIe

This sounds interesting. An interactive game right here in Boston. Would you consider this augmented reality? Anyone want to get a group together and play?
