How Computerized Tutors Are Learning to Teach Humans - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
Actually, ASSISTments is not a tutor, but it draws on insights from artificial intelligence and tutoring. It's a good example of going to scale that we will reference later in the course.
  •
Hi Prof. Dede, it struck me at the end of the article that while the title said '...Computerized Tutors...', what the creator was really struggling with was 'Humanizing computers'. It might never be possible, but the value is really in the journey. Thank you for sharing this with us!

Pranav Mistry: The thrilling potential of SixthSense technology - 3 views

  •
http://www.ted.com At TEDIndia, Pranav Mistry demos several tools that help the physical world interact with the world of data -- including a deep look at his SixthSense device and a new, paradigm-shifting paper "laptop." In an onstage Q&A, Mistry says he'll open-source the software behind SixthSense, to open its possibilities to all.
  •
Hi there Hongge, thanks for sharing this amazing video. He's managed to bridge certain key technologies and made them more intuitive for the daily user. It's great that he's made it open-source too! Maybe we could pay a visit to MIT to check it out? I wonder though, whether such a device would in the future not only project thoughts and programs but also capture user data and begin to 'suggest' or advertise certain things to you. Scary but the potential is enormous. Again, thanks!
  •
Thanks, Matthew. That video was actually filmed three years ago (yes, even before iPhone 4) and I wonder if Pranav is still at MIT Media Lab. Maybe Karen knows more about him and could make an introduction for us? Machine learning and personalizing content for us is already happening. Personally, I like the idea of personalized content simply because nowadays we can be so easily info-overloaded. It is quite normal for CEOs and political leaders to digest pre-screened/selected info by their secretaries and/or advisers, right? And Google has been doing this for advertising to consumers. I don't mind the right ads appear at the right time when I need the product or service. What really strikes me about Pranav's idea is that it reminds me about the movie Inception, where you can transplant an idea into someone's mind and the distinction between reality and the virtual world is so blurry.

Discussions § Transforming Education through Emerging Technologies (Fall 2012) - 0 views

  • This pooling of professional resources to teach all the students is wonderful. What I wonder is how good the skills based curriculum in this program is at aiding students in making deep connections between individual skills, topics and disciplines. I think this type of teaching has tremendous potential.
    • Uche Amaechi

Very interesting point about focusing on skills to the detriment of a more holistic synthesis.  And what happens to shared synthesis when each student has a different learning trajectory
  • PD involving looking at models of this personalized learning being successfully implemented into difficult school environments may mitigate some of these fears.
    • Uche Amaechi

This connects to Laura's observation that teachers are not really mentioned in this part of the plan--they are another piece to be glommed on to the plan. would argue to a more holistic view incorporating the realities of teaching into the fundamental levels of charting learning plans
  • Educators who have learned in teacher-centered classrooms have more difficulty to shift their roles as facilitators. The new model is fascinating as long as it accompanies realistic implementation methods that serve all the parties involved well, at least better that how the situation currently is in terms of workload.
    • Uche Amaechi

Great points. This focus on realistic assessments of capacity and implementation seems to be everybody's primary focus
  • ...1 more annotation...
    • Uche Amaechi

Great points, Laura. Infrastructure and people--a highly overlapping pair, are core challenges to this "flip" of the learning process/system. your concerns are echoed below by your colleagues.

What Would You Pay for a Great Educational App? | MindShift - 1 views

  •
full disclosure: classmate Alex Schoenfeld first shared this with the us in the TIE facebook group :). But it brings an interesting trend in the adoption and pricing of mobile apps: Article outlining what lots of us know when it comes to moblie apps and pricing - free, $1, and $2 are the price-points that sell, and allow us to try out an app with minimal regret. But with the rise of more and more high-quailty, high-profile, and high-budget educatioanl apps, will the pricing structure change? Will parents and educators be willing to spend the prices of traditional computer software ($50 or more?) for really great mobile apps? The article brings up an interesting model that seems to already be coming to life looking at how apps are being sold and updated lately: "Donahoo and Russell propose there's a better way: subscriptions and content expansion packs.  Launchpad Toys follows the latter tact. The initial price the Toontastic app for $3 (though it's currently free). Users can use that fully functioning app, or choose to add additional characters and themes with $.99 expansion packs. This way, they contend, costs are controlled; it's cheap for parents and children to evaluate an app, and the model encourages regular updates."

This organization brings "learning stations" to children in rural villages. In light of our last class' discussion of Negroponte, this seemed like an interesting site to share/compare to Negroponte's approach.

Education Week: Digital Book-Sharing Unlocks Print for Students - 0 views

  •
Digital books allow students with disabilities to read more easily.
  •
I think the main idea and KEY affordance is getting books to these kids faster and more efficiently. In the past, for a visually impaired student, a district would have to request or find the book in Large print or in Braille after the typical book had arrived, so by making an HTML version of the printed book available (at the same time) as the print, allows for screen readers to work and be available to the students without the traditional wait time. Excellent use of technology.

Education Week: Digital Book-Sharing Unlocks Print for Students - 2 views

  • Bookshare memberships are for students who are blind, have low vision, have such learning disabilities as severe dyslexia, or have a disability such as cerebral palsy that could keep them from holding a book. Such students have what are collectively called print disabilities—a distinct departure from saying “learning disabilities,” said David Rose, the chief education officer at the Center for Applied Special Technology, or CAST, in Wakefield, Mass. Related Blog Visit this blog. Using the phrase “print disability” said Mr. Rose, “is co-locating the problem. Print is part of the problem.” His nonprofit organization works on expanding learning opportunities for all individuals, especially those with disabilities, through a set of principles called “universal design for learning.” “We can convey that information in a whole host of ways now. In that world, you go, ‘Print is not very good for a lot of kids,’ ” he said.
  •
Interesting article in edweek on Bookshare - a non-profit electronic book service that provides free digital copies of books in accessible formats for kids with print disabilities, a term coined by George Kerscher to cover visual, physical and language based disabilities that impact the ability to read a physical book.

Founder Institute goes global using technology and helps entrepreneurs create their own companies.

Maung, Thanks for sharing this article. I liked the basic premise but also agreed with the comment by Babson College President "the vast majority of ventures take more than that amount of time [ 4 months] to become operational businesses people can be proud of". I think this 4 month program can be nicely incorporated as a course in a formal entrepreneurship program.

iPads can't improve learning without good teaching Pt 1 - 3 views

  •
This was also shared in UDL by my teaching fellow. Again, it is not just about the TECH, it is about the TEACHer!! Clearly there is a lot of buzz around iPads in schools at the moment. You can't log on to the Web without reading about another school or entire district or department investing massive coin in a sparkling set of the Wonder Tablets, excited that they will cure all the ills of the current education systems around the world.

As blended learning continues to expand across the K-12 sector, definitions are important to help people talk about the new phenomena. Interesting examples of how some games are used for more than just entertainment including crowdsourcing for scientific progress, helping support research, and bridging the language gap.
  •
Hi Adrian, thanks for sharing this. I think that the crowdsourcing potential for online games is great for solving real-life problems. Maybe educators could actually use such a platform for engaging students in school too, like crowdsourcing to solve problems in school.
