      I seriously doubt colleges and universities are going to fall by the wayside into cyberspace. The article is focusing on the cost of education at these institutions instead of the quality of education. Yes, more students will have access to higher ed. degrees because they are more affordable, but setting out on your own at eighteen years of age, whether it be going to college or entering the workforce, is a long-held tradition in society. Students at universities aren't just learning about academics, they're learning about social dynamics as well. Based on my personal experience, I probably learned more about why and how people, groups, teams, and large organizations operate and interact (especially in informal settings) than I did about Milton's 15th century Morte D'Arthur. If the author is proposing that MOST high school graduates stay home for an additional two to four years before entering the real world, I think it would create a whole new set of rammifications that would negatively impact our society as a whole.

    This article talks about online-learning and the ways it may change the college experience. While I agree that new technology is affecting the way our courses are run, I don't see it leading to the complete shut down of Universities. While it is wonderful that people have access to courses and resources that they may not otherwise have, I believe that there will always be a need for face-to-face interactions that one can only get from a University setting.

This game is played by holding the device open as you would a book. The problem is that numbers are moving from the left page to the right page and players are expected to use a stylus to interact with the right page. Left handed players block the view of the game and cannot play.

    This is a really interesting and cool idea. I know that Disney's intense storyboarding model in its 'golden age' relied on months and sometimes years of collaborative, co-creation of a story between 10s-100s of people. And their decline in quality is often attributed to adopting a one-author/screenwriter process (The book: The Illusion of Life, Disney Animation; by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston talks about the company's process with lots of beautiful illustrations, how-to advice, and historical narratives..). What will happen when the general public, with potentially 1000s to millions of viewers put their minds together to evolve the best story?

  • Microsoft's research into a "foot-based user interface" seemed somewhat novel in 2006, when I first wrote about the project. Now that the company has released its Kinect full-body motion control system for the Xbox 360, the idea of controlling a machine with your feet seems like only part of the picture.
  • Despite the fact that it seems outdated, or at least partial, the patent actually could be a notable win as the Redmond company expands the concept of motion-based interfaces beyond its video-game console into more general-purpose computing.

    MOOCs, or "Massive Open Online Courses", are a relatively new model of distance e-learning where hundreds and sometimes thousands of participants all take an online course together. The instructional mode of the courses is fairly decentralized; since there are so many participants in the course, the individual students cannot typically expect to have much individual interaction with the professors running the course. As a result, individual members of the MOOCs take on roles of peer teachers, and these roles are assumed organically (i.e. nobody invites them to become teachers in the course, they simply step up and take the reins). The assessment of MOOCs is extremely flexible; there are no grades and people only participate in what they want to participate in. The theory is that the MOOC creators put the learning environment into place, and the participants learn what they want to learn; less participation simply means that they will not learn as much. Thought this was a though-provoking model of eLearning and the changing role of the instructor in an eLearning environment.

      As journalism, this article observes well the cross conversation in the public debate. Before this conversation even begins it would be useful for the parties to agree on the goal of the interaction between teacher and student. This quote from the article, "digital devices let students learn at their own pace, teach skills needed in a modern economy and hold the attention of a generation weaned on gadgets . . ." Makes broad assumptions that the invitation to learn (things that are pre-conceived by adults) is all the students need. We have a system of education and no matter what we do, the system assumes s significant and active role for adults (rightly so). There is a persistant sense that the system is not working to our expectations, but that hardly argues for the abandonment of personal and substantive interactions among teachers and students. I agree more with this quote, ""Rather than being a cure-all or silver bullet, one-to-one laptop programs may simply amplify what's already occurring - for better or worse (Bryan Goodwin)," because it asserts the point that Technology promises to enhance the value of our effort in education with better tools to do what teachers do. Technology is not (as some seem to think) a replacement of what teachers do and that unspoken assumption seems to be underlying much of what I see as vague public discussion.

    James- very interesting article about Student Response Systems. The clickers are a great tool to facilitate student participation in a teacher-centered classroom, and many of us have seen the Turning Point clickers in action. And they really do help with engaging everyone in the audience. Remember that diversity seminar during orientation week? The rich discussion that ensued in a crowd of 650 was really made possible because of the opening survey questions, the clicker interactivity, and the discussions that sprung up at each individual table which then mushroomed out to the rest of the crowd. I never thought a diversity seminar could be that engaging, and the clickers were definitely a key part of that. My only criticism of the article is that it seems to be pushing hardware capabilities over sound pedagogy, which is always a danger in learning about emerging technologies. Question though: is Socrative not entirely free? it seems like a great tool with many interactive capabilities, ideal for many classroom settings and activities.

    Steve I agree the article did have a strong sense of hardware pushing. It was written by a research on the the vendor's payroll. I've changed "free" to FREE; I intended the quotes to be for emphasis, not skepticism. Socrative is indeed free.

    While I would not consider this incredibly expensive ride a 'distruptive innovation' or even an emerging ed technology, what Epcot has done by bringing this DIY-VR concept to the masses (if you are one of the masses that can A- afford Disney and B-have the patience to wait in line for `5-6 hours) is very important to future ed tech innovation strategies. The progression/invention of such cost prohibitive entertainment tools will fall squarely on the high-end theme parks and consumer venues. The challenge has been set by Epcot and now others must either compete directly or develop a better or more accessible solution. Off the top of my head, I can think of a few cost saving innovations that might be developed in this 'race'- Artificial G-Force Engline: variable air pressure, smart-chairs, fans
