      Try playing through this "escape the room" type flash game. You have to conduct an experiment as part of the solution. In this case the experiment is trivial and its validity is questionable, but couldn't we create a similar game as a performance assessment? If you get stuck, you can click "walkthrough" for help (including a video of the solution). Yes, I know there are many advertisements.

      Chris don't you find the spastic picking up and inspecting of random artifacts laying around the castle, maze, forest, etc..hoping for a dialogue box to blurt out '..Just a regular newspaper...But what's this, a secret code puzzle left unfinished?!' is a flat experience. Don't get me wrong, I love easter eggs, but the hunt is a pain in clunky 2D.

    Consider the possibilities for a performance assessment while playing through this simple "escape the room" game. The validity of the experiment involved in the solution is questionable.

    Escape games are very big in the publishing industry right now due mostly to their inquiry based assessment and the low development cost compared to highly immersive first-person games. The biology lab escape is one of the better ones that I've seen out there. Thanks Chris!

    I played for about 8 minutes and then grew tired of the game. I am curious how assessors would have graded my performance. I found the easier way to "escape the room" was to close the browser window.

    OffiSync (currently in beta) allows users to access and modify Google Docs from their MS Office applications (like Word, Excel, PowerPoint). The tool requires Windows XP, Vista, or 7 and MS Office 2003 or 2007. Some errors are to be expected in the beta stage, but the benefit of conveniently editing Google Docs is worth the minor annoyances.

    The 1-step migration of research content to the host document is very nice, but outside of that, I think I would be inclined to stick with google docs if for no other reason than users (and any collaborators) do not need to download an application to their computer.

    As I chew through the Visions 2020 readings, I can't help my skepticism...and not due to the seamless integration of emerging ed technology. Alas, PEOPLE and the existing power structure of schools (reform) are not guided by a mission to reinvent, but to move the goal posts on ed standards around so as to insulate and protect the paradigm.     I get really nervous about these "shifts" when they become sensationalized. Despite our insistence that students are not created equal, we keep searching for the one-size-fits-all solution to education, and in this era that solution is bolstered by anything containing the word DIGITAL. How much socioemotional development will students lose if this trend increases over time? How do we provide for human relationships, mentors, even confrontation and conflict resolution when we are all hiding behind computer screens? It has to be about more than convenience.

    Really interesting article on a school district in New Jersey that is testing iPad use across multiple classroom subjects . The district purchased 60 devices for students in the testing program. Pending the results, they are considering providing all of their high school students with the device as early as next year.

    This is a really interesting and cool idea. I know that Disney's intense storyboarding model in its 'golden age' relied on months and sometimes years of collaborative, co-creation of a story between 10s-100s of people. And their decline in quality is often attributed to adopting a one-author/screenwriter process (The book: The Illusion of Life, Disney Animation; by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston talks about the company's process with lots of beautiful illustrations, how-to advice, and historical narratives..). What will happen when the general public, with potentially 1000s to millions of viewers put their minds together to evolve the best story?

  • Confidence-Based Repetition These combined concepts of Repetition, Active Recall, and Metacognition work together to create Brainscape’s unique process of Confidence-Based Repetition (CBR). CBR acts essentially as your personalized knowledge stream, where bite-sized concepts are repeated one after another, in Question/Answer pairs, and then re-entered into the repetition queue in intervals based on your confidence in how well you know them. Low-confidence items (e.g. the 1’s and 2’s) are repeated more often until you upgrade your confidence to higher levels.

      "Confidence-based repitition" looks like the direct application of current thinking in neuroscience about how we learn.   I wonder how well it really works?  It's theory based but not truly field tested.....Not quite iterative research-design-field test-tweak loop Dock's Design course prescribes.
