How Blogging Has Changed Over The Last 3 Years (Stats) - 0 views

  •
The numbers paint a stark picture: blogging has changed, but the blogging scene is in some ways in better shape than it was three years ago. The big picture is that total engagement with online content is growing, on-site engagement is declining in significance as off-site engagement like link sharing on social networks grows. Surprisingly, this off-site link sharing has also extended the lifespan of content.

Web-based tool Hotseat taking students' questions - USATODAY.com - 0 views

  • That potential for instant feedback adds a new edge and depth to the class
  • Hotseat probably helps most in large classes, where he says it "can give voice to the silent student body and help stimulate discussion.
  • And because Hotseat allows anonymous posts, says senior Tim Cummings, 21, students are more likely to ask questions they wouldn't if they had to speak out in person.
  •
Interesting article about Hotseat, a web-based tool that can be accessed by students through facebook, twitter, or cellphones, which allows them to ask questions and make comments during class.

Turn your 'Lurkers' into Active Members - "How-To" for lefora forums - 1 views

  •
Since we have talked about Lurking a few times during class, i thought this post in a help forum for Lefora.com (a forum host) was interesting. The subtle difference in perspective for this post is that assumes managers of the forum are appealing to audience rather than offering fodder for consideration and discussion. A trend I've noticed generally around the use of technology in education is how it requires teachers to be better persuaders and packagers of information. I think this is a good trend but I am wary of it going too far.

A researcher whose work ties into our class discussion - 0 views

  •
Yesterday afternoon, some of us were at a talk by Prof. Alex Pentland I found several of the topics tie back to our class discussion. In particular, his thoughts that only the individual should have ownership over personal data and others may seek permission to access it was, I felt appropriate. Of course for young students it appears more complicated. I am considering reading his papers ( at least the non technical parts :) His ideas can impact learning in the class room too ! Please share your thoughts !

Putting Text Messaging BACK in the Classroom - 0 views

See a need, build something to meet the need, and go from there... StudyBoost is the result of a brother watching his brother and friend try to study for the GMAT without carrying around the book. Born: an IM client that allows for collaboration on questions and answers applicable to the test by both students and teachers - wherever and whenever. For Wiske's class - wouldn't this fit nicely into the CoI and PI models? If so, why wouldn't school embrace this use instead of worrying about inappropriate use of phones in class? Make the lesson or assignment engaging enough - generative enough - to hook and sustain appropriate interaction on the device that 93% of children have ACCESS to? Sounds like a win-win?
