    This is really cool. I think there are opportunities in this for math learning, and maybe even connecting physics to math. For example, I could see embedded learning being used for mathematical modeling, but I have not seen it being done yet.

    Xu and I discussed this article in class/section. We had similar thoughts ;unfortunate as it is, this is a case of eliminating the effect and not the real cause. Perhaps this article does not fully reveal details but hopefully a real solution is being put into place...quickly.

What I wonder is how good the skills based curriculum in this program is at aiding students in making deep connections between individual skills, topics and disciplines. I think this type of teaching has tremendous potential.

      Very interesting point about focusing on skills to the detriment of a more holistic synthesis.  And what happens to shared synthesis when each student has a different learning trajectory

      This connects to Laura's observation that teachers are not really mentioned in this part of the plan--they are another piece to be glommed on to the plan. would argue to a more holistic view incorporating the realities of teaching into the fundamental levels of charting learning plans
  • Educators who have learned in teacher-centered classrooms have more difficulty to shift their roles as facilitators. The new model is fascinating as long as it accompanies realistic implementation methods that serve all the parties involved well, at least better that how the situation currently is in terms of workload.

The use of archival videos in the game within the context of objects is a creative blend of videos and VW for education. Another interesting example of a VW that exemplifies situated learning.

  • Google pulled all their ads on October 26th, due to TOS violations on the part of the wiki and forums — specifically "adult and mature content" on pages that carried Google Adsense ads. These ads provided far and away the majority of the site's operating budget.

    TV Tropes is being very transparent about creating a moderation system for the content. This is in response to loosing advertising dollars from Google. It is interesting to see the outline for their model of moderating content. Some of these elements could be used in a web 2.0 environment for education

    This is really cool- combining mobile, situated learning in the real world, with creative group projects, and letting kids direct their own active, learning 'flow'.. Can this scale up to schools (or after-school programs), without access to museum artifacts and mobile devices?

    I read this article this afternoon, and thought of it when I was doing work for my wiki assignment. I am looking into the blog Teachers Love SMART Boards (http://smartboards.typepad.com/) and I saw that the author of the blog also works for Teacher Online Training, which offers courses (for a fee) for teachers interested in implementing technologies in their classroom, or using the technology they currently have in a more meaningful way. The majority of the blog was reviews of free sites or education-oriented tools from outside sources, but there were a few posts that dealt with the programs offered by TOT. It made me wonder whether the blog was intended to be impartial, or a form of advertising... He mentioned his job in the company at the beginning of most if not all of the posts that promoted their programs, but these new guidelines may put this blogger in a sticky situation.

    Being a 2nd year part-time student, I already took David Rose's UDL course last spring. My group project for UDL was exploring VoiceThread-- understanding its current feautres and capabilities, testing it out in a real world situation with some students, and envisioning changes to fix shortcomings plus new features. Overall, we thought VoiceThread was really cool! Could allow students to communicate in different kinds of ways (text, voice, submitting video statements, drawing-- whatever someone preferred or was comfortable with) and enabled a growing transcript of student dialogue in reference to a piece of content. But there was a real learning curve- in figuring out how (as a 'teacher') to create an original VoiceThread using our media. And then students had to figure out the interface and tools available to them as they used VoiceThread to browse a stream we created and comment on it. As of last spring at least, I felt it was a bit cumbersome. Really wish it was more intuitive so both creators and viewers could jump right in and get right to communicating. Haven't gone back to using it as of late, but I hear they now have iPhone/iPad access!
